JF - My dad was stationed at Graf from 79-83. We lived in Ehenfeld for 1 year then on post at Vilseck for 3 years. He commuted to Graf and was in charge of developing the first M1 tank - right there in Graf. He also helped design the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Absolutely loved Bavaria and the entire experience. Now live outside Charlotte NC. Hope to go back some day - it's been 40 years since I walked both those posts.

@@DTVDanielTelevision I know the tank trails were all dirt all the way out to Range 301 Abrams / Bradley range. It was the largest Construction Project in the Corp of Engineers.

I also was stationed in graff 535 eng. About the same time as you, March of 83 until about April of 85. I was a mechanic 63S.

@@DTVDanielTelevision I just wanna tell you Daniel, everyone had to use transformers back then. In 92, they had both systems in the quarters. Nobody had washers and dryers in their apt. We used our own in the basement with a transformer. They were heavy and I'd carry it down from the 3rd floor for my mom. There was no housing available and it took us 4 months to find housing on the economy. My dad gave up our apt.which we were supposed to have because our paperwork got shoved back into someone's drawer and we never got a port all. Then magically, we went and had no place to live. We lived on the 4th floor in transit qtrs.for 4 months and shared a bathroom and one toilet with various families and GIs. The window was our refrigerator. We had a hotplate, toaster and electric frying pan and a toaster. There was no AFN tv, vcr, dvd, etc and I dam near went stir crazy. We went to the movies every night. Our car had a leaky radiator and I had to fill it up with water whenever we went anywhere. The commissary and PX were pretty lame and hadn't improved much by 92. The older qtrs without balconies we're dingy on the outside and the stucco was cracked and falling off. The red tile roofs were reddish gray with coal dust. The civilian buildings were not painted pretty colors. Looked the same as 1945.. Unlike Graf, Bamberg in very medieval and claustrophobic. Not a wide open space anywhere or a 4 lane road anywhere at the time. My parents finally found a one bedroom apt. In the redlite district in a row of connected buildings on the 3rd floor. No front or back yard. Just the building, sidewalk and street..cars parked halfway onto the sidewalk to make way for the cars and black Mercedes taxis full of GIs picking up prostitutes all night. And it was winter which made it even more depressing. Oh yeah..4 kids sleeping in one bed. I took a bus to school so I ate lunch at the snack bar every day with the GIs and listened to The Supremes and Gary Lewis and the Playboys and the Drifters and the Beatles etc.on the juke box and you could look out and see a castle in the hill and big beautiful American cars parked on the cold wet cobblestones. Then we got qtrs. on the fourth floor if the balcony buildings with 8...yes EIGHT bedrooms! The weather was nice and school was out and it was finally tolerable. The day before school started, we finally got permanent qtrs.in the dingy buildings across from the main gate. Convoys of tanks would parade by in the middle of the night and shake the buildings. We were only in qtrs. for eleven months and then they started sending my dad's division to Ft. Campbell Kentucky for Vietnam training. My dad already had 20 years in and my mom insisted that he retire out so he put in his paperwork and didn't send us to Ft. Campbell. Many if my friends went back before I did because of that. When we landed in Ft. Dix, I catapulted from the plane to the first round door knob I saw in two years. We took a bus to retire out in Ft.Hamilton and My dad and I took the subway into NYC to get transported to pick up our VW square back that my parents bought in Germany. That first night back in the states, we had to stay in a crummy hotel in Brooklyn because there were no rooms available in Ft. Hamilton. The Manhattan skyline was all lit up a block away behind us. I was in Lala land. It was euphoric to come back to the states back then and the cars were absolutely spectacular. I sent a longer version of this story to my old school in Germany in 90 and they printed it in their school newspaper and then started sending me their school newspaper after that. So in 92. I took my dad army buddies wife who we had remained friend with back to Germany to visit her family and I stayed with them. They lived close to the base and had no tub or shower. I walked into the base every day and took a shower on post and met the journalism student who publishes my letter and her parents. They took me to Rhotenburg and on a volksmarz and I stayed in touch with them and visited them in 99 at Ft. Bragg. I wrote all this just to lead up to:..I can't believe your px is a mall and you have duplexes in large subdivisions with yards and garages and your own washers and dryers. That would have been absolute fantasy land to me back then. I'd love to see it but I don't think I could take seeing Warner Barracks closed down. It was great after we finally got settled in and it would break my heart to see it now after seeing the major facelift it got in the early 90s. It was actually nice by then. It blew my mind to see a Burger King right on post. I've barely scratched the surface but I just wanted to elaborate. It was life changing and I was just a kid but it made me half of what I am today.

I was stationed in Gieblestat in 72-74 where we lived on the economy and my oldest daughter was born in Wuerzburg. and again in Hanau,, 80-83 where we lived in housing areas Caldwell and Pioneer with 3 kids this time. On Your story kinda mirrors ours ..good times.

We did things together as a family and I had to actually read to entertain myself. It was the most miserable and happiest time of my life.

The weather is great in Germany, but some complain about the cold in the winter. You'll get all four seasons for sure, and it does rain a lot. We joke out here that if you don't like the current weather, just give it time because it'll change in an hour :)

If you’re moving here with the military, you will need a German bank account to pay for some specific bills (phone, rent, loan for car, etc). Everyone has one through Service Credit Union or Community Bank on base. We have both German and American bank accounts, but ATM fees are minimal and aren’t really a concern (for us). We use USAA and some ATM fees are reimbursed each month. No change in credit cards, they work internationally but I’m not quite sure your question with regards to the topic :)

@@DTVDanielTelevision I was asking because I saw another video that said most places don't take credit or debit cards because of the fees. We both have navy Federal accounts so I guess we need to get a German account also....lol. When you say loan for your car do you mean the insurance or the loan for a car you bought there? We will be having the military ship my truck since it's heavier and he will ship his car. The are both new so we didn't want to have to buy one there. Sorry for all the questions. How much is car insurance basically?

Hey np, so what you’re referring to is businesses not accepting cards for payment because they don’t want to pay the associated fees of having a card machine. The unwritten rule out here (especially in Bavaria) is “cash is king,” so always have Euro on you. Many places are cash only but I think it’s more of a cultural thing rather than a credit card fee thing. As far as loans I meant you could get one through the banks on base but they’re not technically a German bank they just allow you to pay bills to the Germans using what’s called an IBAN number. You can get a loan through whom ever you’d like tho. Car insurance will differ on each person based on the bank, interest rate, driving history, etc. We have ours through USAA and only pay a lil over $100 for two cars.

Yep, if stationed on the base, they have an auto skills shop where you can borrow tools, a lift, and work in the garage.

@@DTVDanielTelevision There is an alternate spelling for the case when an umlaut isn't available on the keyboard: oe for ö; ue for ü, and ae for ä. Anglophones tend to ignore the first vowel of that diphtong and just pronounce the e. Usually the correct pronunciation is part of a process to rewire your brain to be able to hear and process that sound. Upon hearing umlauts, unfamiliar brains will sort them into a known vowel and create the illusion of hearing that vowel and then also reproduce that vowel when trying to pronounce the umlaut in question.
