If we want to be honest with ourselves, Nigeria really was never meant to be one country. The North and South were honestly too different for it to work as one country. The British United the country based on economic and political reasons, not based on what was on the ground. The difference between the North and South made it inevitable for conflict to bear after independence

Well presented and researched. I think the principle wrong turn was Britain's lack of administrators in the Region back in the late 19th Century. To save on costs this merging of the Area has caused so many issues between the peoples. It's obvious that Britain did a lot to compensate for this in their forming of a Federal Constitution be Nigeria is really 3 Countries in 1. With one asset that generates 90% of the GDP = Oil. Those that criticize Britain I put to them the question how would you envision the development of the Region into a Modern state without the assistance of Britain ?
@markaxworthy2508
@markaxworthy2508 11 ай бұрын
A problem for the British was that the population of the UK was only about one tenth of the population of their empire and their metropolis was thousands of miles away from all of it. They therefore tended to rule indirectly through local leaderships. By contrast, the population of metropolitan France in 1914 was about the same as the whole of its empire combined. It was far more populous than its African colonies, which were closer to France itself. As a result, the French were able to impose themselves more directly in West Africa than were the British.
@FHIPrincePeter
@FHIPrincePeter 10 ай бұрын
@@markaxworthy2508 I am not familiar of the population stat's of France and Britain. Given the Area covered by both countries one would need a massive population. Lugard's "Dual Mandate" was the template for it's modus operandi in Africa in particular those parts where Settlers could not settle due to Tropical Diseases. It has been argued that because of the Franco Prussian War in the 1870's and Frances defeat by Germany(Prussia) it made France look outward to snap up Africa, in turn Germany sought to do the same thing. Britain was more of a reluctant Colonialist in Africa , but felt the need due to National Pride and Trading interests to protect those links that they had established. Hence the Conference of Berlin in 1884(or 5) and the scramble for Africa. Frances centralised empire was more disruptive of local cultures and traditions than the British that's for sure. British control of Nigeria (Named after Mary Kingsley ( Lugard's wife) was 1900 to 1960. It had influence in Lagos but that was due to abolishing the slave trade ( read Cmdr Forbes memoirs and King of Ghezo of Dahomey ). It's been 63 years since British Rule and Nigeria doesn't have much to show for it.

There's no colonist who can be credited for the abolishment of slavery. @@ahmedsaleh9509 Funny how Europeans took it upon themselves to 'abolish' African slavery after losing most of their slave-manned colonies in the Americas. Europeans sought to expand their presence in Africa, which would require lots of cheap local labour, why would they instead fuel the slave-manned industries of the newly independent/autonomous nations of the Americas and challenge their own economic supremacy? Atlantic slave trade in Africa was probably already on the decline by then, but colonial legislation certainly helped to further eradicate public slave markets and free the enslaved. But both slavery and slave trading continued well into the colonial era, and in some of those countries even into the post-colonial era! The colonial officials sometimes ignored it for strategic reasons, and in some instances were the perpetrators themselves. Belgians and Germans were the most brutal and practically enslaved their subjects. And there are documented instances of corrupt British officials participating in slave trading in Zanzibar.

@@adeamujale The slaves did not abolished slavery. You’re talking nonsense here . In the 19th century, British empire was the biggest and strongest empire ever existed. They had the power to crush any slave rebellion. I know it’s a complicated history but to ignore what abolitionist movement did is hypocrizy. Today is becoming a trendy to trash and reduce western civilization into colonialism and slavery. This absolutely hypocrisy. All empires have committed atrocities in scale or another. It wasn’t just the west . Meanwhile, only in the west we see real movement for abolishing any form of slavery. In other civilizations slavery simply wasn’t an issue.

This was a somewhat polite approach to the British manipulation of our lands. It seems to me that the only reason they ended slave trade was too slowly but surely establish further regional and more profitable control of the region in a land full of lush resources. Can you see yourself trading in a hostile environment. So they paid the other colonial powers off to ease the tension and establish a new form of control and extraction. First slaves 150 years now natural resources. But were the British who ended slavery muhaaahahaaa, YEAH RIGHT.

This person seems to be omitting the fact that those slaves sold to Europeans were done so by other Nigerians. Had the Nigerians agreed to end their slave trading, Nigeria would not have been colonised by Britain! Say what you like about why it was done, the truth is that it cost Britain a huge amount of money and many lives of sailors, including those of the Krumen of the Grebo peoples who helped to stop this. Grow up and take accountability of your involvement. Even today there are 700,000 slaves in Africa, none of which involves the White nations of the world. Black Africans are, and always have been enslavers of their own peoples.

This is what worries me most. The British recruited Lugard to bring areas of the Igbo and that has nothing with either Yorub nor the Hausa to add them together, ➗ them in North and South, 2 regions only. This was a mistake. The British, would have noted the area to be North and West because these areas were conquered by the British. Why would they join Biafra? In fact, Biafra exists in theory not in practice. Today the Hausas and Yoruba are doing their turn by turn rules excluding the Igbo but they don't want to give them freedom. They both hold the Biafra because of their interest, this is what gives the Yoruba mind to over shadows the East when it should be their turn during every election, for the fear that an Igbo president might decide to declare Biafra. This is why they don't want an Igbo man to come on board. I saw the train in Nigeria that was setving the Interests of the British. I love this video documenary and their lied of being the blood line of king David. For same greed this turn was said to for the Igbo but Nigetua refused. I wonder what they think maybe bulling the Igbo will make them stupid and if they raise up for anything they could face another slavery boat as punishment. I don't think the Igbo knew that they are not included than to sit quiet to be ruled like slaves by the Yoruba and Hausa. How can the Igbo see this and believe the history.💯💕✅✅ Thank you for sharing. It is good we know who killed us and why the Igbo be in this situation. As you can see Tinubu as up for a other territory. The way he will suffer only the Creator knows it.

Are they wrong those who maintain that slavery was never abolished as colonisation was but a localised institutionalised slavery. Were the exploited colonised treated as equals by the colinisers? Had the enslaved colonised a say on the colonial administration? High time the authentic history of Africa were rewritten by the victims of enslaving colonisation themselves!

Your historical perspective is acutely inaccurate and deficient in many respects. The reasons why indirect rule was introduced in the North were basically because of the presence of a functioning efficient system of governmence in the North. There were courts, there were tax system, there was correspondence with nations outside of it. The educational system wasn't western yes. But the ability to read and write most not be western before it passes the test of valid definition of education. Northerners were reading and writing even before the so called colonial masters set their eyes on our continent. Please do consult widely before you come up a serious issue like this.

The British used indirect rule because it was the easiest way for them to rule. They used the same technique in India. Buy off the local chief, sultan, prince, or nawab. Or replace them with a rival who would cooperate. Violence if necessary but other methods were cheaper. Did the British use local clerks in Nigeria the way they did in India do you know?

I see a developing motive of this channel's direction to acquit european destruction of Afrika(and it's populations) both past and present. Whilst hiding their motive in a selective(and slight revisionist) form of the damaging record of white/arab colonization of Afrikans(which exists to this day). One can only wonder if the presenter(if not AI) is either a non Black or worse yet Black who identifies as something else!!!

Really? The narrator does not seem to be in any way trying to mitigate colonialism. She is definitely not a fan. That's how I hear her, at least.

Nigeria is named for the Niger River. Probably from the Berber or Tamashek language N'jer N'jer, River of Rivers and an easy alliteration of Negra from the Latin language.

@@tpxchallenger the niger river was named by the english and french colonizers as well, the real name of the river is different, the berber word for the river was different and guinea for example was the name berbers gave to the land below the sahara which is their word for black, actually I think the niger river is called guinea in their language, anyway, Niger is literally the N-word in old english

@@tpxchallenger niger=neger=negro the latin word for black, not black people, black in general, also the spanish word for black, this is why the exchange between the n-word and negro is so common in english because they are the same word in sense, europeans named them like that and black people doesn't care, do you know why? because racism in the western world and in the world in general is a social construct, people will get offended and mad by the things you tell them to get offended and mad, discrimination because of someone's race is a thing, but racism as in modern day racism is 90% a social construct, an engineering, black people are very docile and easy to control
