I really like that you don’t shy away from your failures or timeliness issues and address them head on. It’s encouraging to a nascent gardener to know that it happens to everyone. You then go on to address workarounds. A lot of KZfaqrs don’t do that, but that’s the best part!

I'm definitely in the life happens schedule😂 My son was born in March and I have been scrambling to sow, transplant, prune, trellis, build new beds, fertilize, and water everything to my own expectations.

I am glad it's not just me (that is behind on my planting.) 😂 I farm sustainably in Zone 6b in the Finger Lakes. Still transplanting tomatoes, peppers, planting potatoes, beans, etc. Happy planting!

Jenna, I just admire how you encourage not only me, but so many others! I started to take gardening very serious this year ! I went from two beds to ten. I live in Colorado and it seems that your zone is the only one that’s comparable to mine. I am usually overwhelmed when watching other gardeners who are harvesting when I still haven’t started to plant. I have a life happens situation 😂 I live in Lower Michigan in zone 6a. I'm just finishing up getting in my heat loving, plants and seeds, as well as a ton of flowers. So excited to see how my 26x40, 10x20 and my above ground beds and pots do. I'm crazy busy with life.. . So much to do and not enough time 😂

Almost half my garden is still weeds and beds waiting to be constructed. The other half is divided into stuff I was ready to plant in beds that were prepared for last fall and this spring, and a new area for my tomatoes that was well intentioned but in practice was a disaster and my tomatoes are suffering for it. Oh well. Hopefully I can catch up after this heat wave.

We're a little bit north of you here in Ohio and spring/summer is always a balancing act. Dodging weather, dodging work to go have fun, and guilt dragging us back to plant whatever new berry bushes, plants, and trees are waiting for our attention. Focusing on trying more things we don't see in are local farmers markets. Honeyberrys, elderberries, jostaberries, figs, maypops, cucamelons, celeriac, etc. Went a little crazy with the melons this year along with beans and sugar snap peas.

Thank you for this. We have similar frost dates and I don't feel as bad that I'm "behind." Very encouraging.

Can't beat yourself up over the last frost date, in particular. It's so much like, "Elm Street? That's two stops before mine; watch and see where I get off!" And if where you are in Ohio is anything like where I am in Ohio, no matter what you anticipate or how you anticipate it, the weather's going to out-fox you some way! I have 146 plants I started indoor I have most of them in the garden, and some in grow bags and pots, I started a second set of plants for a next harvest late season, and made a greenhouse from a old carport to extend my season!

Here, in 8b Texas, we’re entering the “hot as hell” part of summer. Most, things are beginning to struggle and 40% shade cloth is up. My fall garden is usually the best. So, I’m starting seeds for transplanting in mid August early September. I have 153 days before average 1st frost.

I think Aug 1 will be cutting it close for cucumbers, but you guys in Ohio still get decently warm weather in September so it should be okay, especially if no frost until mid-late October so you can get a longer harvest window.

I really love these videos! It gives me a good idea on things I should do. I’m in the Cincinnati area. We’re getting ready to have a heatwave this coming week. My peppers are doing well. My beans, cucumbers, lettuce, leafy greens, onions, garlic, potatoes, & watermelon are all doing well. My tomatoes are slow growing, but they’re growing. I’m starting to get some flowers. I struggled with critters nipping at my tomatoes this year so it set them back. But they have recovered.

As one a bit of a behind... still planting in Zone 5a. Have contingency plan... also pots now a days. Working well... extras are going in soon. It's so warm here, doing my best. Three Sister experiment in large pots and chicken dirt... Freebee's: Nursery lady says it'll be okay. OK!

Just transplanted my 5 tomato plants and planted pole beans. I was thinking to plant more cucumbers in a week because they haven’t really produced enough. In Southern Indiana 7a, and this just helped me relax about everything being so far behind.

This year the choice was putting up a deer fence or starting the veggie seeds and planting a spring/summer garden. So the garden was postponed. But we are in NC zone 8a and have plenty of planting time. Tomato plants from my generous neighbor is a bonus and our green beans sprouted in 3 days!!! Just taking it one hot day at a time. Happy planting

Thanks for the ideas, Jenna! Insect netting has made a huge difference in my eggplant starts this year! I, too, have trouble with the flea beetle, but the netting has eliminated like 99% of them since they've been in.

I screwed up my pepper because I planted them too early and damaged by hail and cool nights. Finally recognize that they don't tolerate cold as well as tomato so I will start them same day as tomato but bring them out 2 weeks later. I have too much problem with bacterial wilt from cucumber beetles for my cucumber. I will grow mostly bacterial wilt resistance variety from now, which doesn't have many variety to choose from. I did grew burpless variety this year but it still catches the wilt. Last year I didn't get ripe tomato starting seeds in August. So August would be the last day I would transplant. I will reserve dwarfs and early to harvest variety for the second half of the season. July 4th would be my due date from now to germinate tomato seeds for the second round. I choose to use minimal to no insect spraying. Been using insect netting to protect my low height vegetables and it's been working great plus it prevents digging.

Got a good amount of tomatoes, potatoes few cucumber plants, strawberries are not growing great but are there. Corn is almost knee high already. decent amounts of beats. I have my melons and cantelope coming up now too. A few carrots here or there but there didnt do great, and ONE single hot pepper plant that survived thats about 2 and a half feet tall. LOL crazy spring, but ive been watering like mad. Came here to figure out what to do next :D thanks for the help. Pennsylvania Zone 6 grower here

I'm a transplaant myself! From zone 5 to zone 7. Took me a whole planting season to shake off my internal planting schedule and realize I have a wonderfully longer season. Got with the program this year and now have a second crop of seedlings coming along for a second crop. Jenna has a pleasant voice, nice speaking pace, very easy to listen to. Some YTers have great videos but for me can be hard to listen to. 😊 I subscribed.

WRT planting on time, everything is early except what I deliberately waited for. There are some plants that are best to wait for to plant.

I got to many varieties of winter squash/pumpkins I ran out of space. I'm mowing a section of the field off and tilling to make room for more varieties. Life's good. 🎃

SE Michigan zone 6. Just harvested garlic today...2 weeks early! Crazy. Peas are still coming in like mad! Beans and cukes are looking good. Erected a shade cloth over the tomatoes and they are loving it because last two days here reached 95! Happy gardening!

I lease a community garden plot. They have sun, water drip tape, and a deer fence. They did a rye cover crop which means they don’t open until Memorial Day. The negative is the opening is 6 weeks later this year because of that. 🥺I have peppers to plant yet. And some more cucumber seeds as a continuous 2nd crop. Replaced some tomatoes already which got sun scalded, I think. I gave everything a shot of Agrothrive 3-3-5 earlier this week. I think that saved and boosted a lot of everything. Our biggest problem have been 2 years of late summer (of underwater) rains which blight out the gardens. I have 15 varieties of different tomatoes. I had it narrowed to maybe 7 to plant. But, you know with gardening, it takes its twists and turns, and sometimes things end up the way that they do.🤷‍♂

This has been by far one of the strangest garden seasons I've seen. Most of the strange seems to be pretty good since it's confusing a whole bunch of insect pests. I also felt late by planting out my cucurbits in late May when the last frost was back in April, but I remembered the frost on May 8th last year! I did get my first block of corn in on May 15th when the white oak leaves were the "size of squirrel's ears" so I should have some of that fairly early compared to normal. I actually started my tomatoes back in March, but I'm just seeing my first fruit now, hopefully I get a few before the end of the month!

I'm feeling behind on everything this year. Having a baby mid-May definitely made things more challenging! I'm hoping I can stay on top of the weeds. This little one doesn't want to be set down yet so I'm learning just how much is possible with them in the baby carrier.

I was able to get cold hardy crops in early this year (early April - Zone 5). I've been harvesting lettuces, spinach, garlic scapes, sugar snap peas, snow peas, several kinds of brassicas, etc. and perennial herbs. Blossoms abound in the gardens, and it appears the berries (raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, cranberries, and logan berries) will all have bumper crops this year. 😊Now I just have to nurse it all through a heat wave of temps pushing 100 degrees! ☀ In New Hampshire! (rare)

Great work Jenna. I put the garden fallow last fall with a cover of Winter Rye, Hairy Vetch, and Austrian Winter Peas. The Rye is in seed and the Vetch and Peas are in bloom. It is a beautiful sight with the bees working extra hard. I will leave all go to seed to next spring’s crop.

Hi, Jenna! Thanks for the refresher on dates for planting. I just caught up on your May video, and I, too, had a terrible slug problem for the first time in about 12 years! I did my best to try all sorts of things and lost my entire strawberry harvest (which would have been pretty dang good). I see a second batch of berries starting so I finally opted for Sluggo Plus. Really a bummer. Anyhow, thanks for the vids and happy growing!

I keep looking at some of my plants and freaking out because of how small they look, or that maybe it's too late to plant something else (I'm just over here in MO), but you just now planting all sorts of things makes me feel better because you're a better gardener than I am, so if you're cool with doing all these things in June, I definitely need to take a second and breathe! It's nice to see my garden isn't the only one that feels like it's a month ahead of schedule! My peppers, tomatoes and cucumber (the classic trio 😂) especially are out of control here in Cleveland. It's going to be upper 90's here all week and the plants are definitely reacting to that.

I tried a second harvest of Yellow squash and Zucchini last year from seed in August and their just wasn't enough time in New England. I figure if I start them this year indoors around July 4th I will have a better result. So exciting!

I love all of your videos and they’re so helpful for me. Pittsburgh zone 6b and our weather was wild in the spring. A few hot days and all my carrots and beets bolted 😢 but I am still harvesting kale, lettuce, and snow peas 😊

Just planted potatoes and eggplants about 6 inches tall today where my spinach was before it bolted from the heat. My broccoli is about to be taken down to make room for some peas. My cilantro is starting to seed so I'll find something else to go where they are in July, possibly some garlic for next year. I'm harvesting broccoli, green beans, cilantro, basil, garlic, rosemary, parsley, strawberries, and lemon thyme already and tomatoes and peppers are covered in flowers with some small peppers already forming. My corn is shoulder high on me and I'm 6'. Onions, shallots, fennel, dill, carrots, bush cucumbers, blackberries, , potatoes, ,and flowers are all about half way there. I will wait for fall to do most of my peas, radishes, and lettuce with another round of spinach. So far it's been a strange weather year but my garden is far ahead of most since I managed to keep it all alive since an early May planting.

You have such a beautiful garden. Ohio same zone, I can't believe harvest this early year. Due to my early planting, and your recommendations, we have lots of crops already: broccoli, squash, zucchini, strawberries, beans, beets, lettuces, 1 cuke and 1 pepper!! Mid June!!! My corn I'd hip high! Despite the feel lots of time for more!!! My Napa cabbage did bolt immediately but I am optimistic for a long fall, thanks Jeanna, my gardening has improved due to your suggestions and hard work, lov ya ❤😊😊❤

I appreciate this video so much! We're in the same zone, and I thought there was nothing left to plant. I still have some open spaces in a few containers, plus I thought the fun of seed starting and watching everything sprout was over for awhile. I always think of our growing season as very short, but you reframed that idea for me when you pointed out how much time is still left!

beans always do best in my 6b garden if i wait until mid july. they just havent done as well when its still outrageously hot when they are maturing. definitely not too late for summer crops !

Just about done planting here in Ontario Zone 5. Cucumbers, tomatoes, cool crops, melon/watermelon, summer squash all planted, most eggplant, peppers, winter squash also planted. Just have tomatillos, a few extra eggplants and peppers (late to germinate ones that are still small and were in no rush to transplant), as well as some novelties like jaltomato, kangaroo apple, tzimbalo and chinese lantern. This weekend I was busy moving 2 cubic yard of topsoil into new raised beds and 10 cubic yards of mulch into the backyard. The weekend was still mild here, 60-75F during the day, so I wanted to get it done before the 90F heat hits us Monday through Friday. Looks like you guys down in Ohio have a really monstrous heatwave kicking up. Here is should just be high 80s-low 90s for 5 days before dropping to mid 70s-low 80s for the weekend and beyond. I'm hoping I can get some of my remaining cool crops like peas through that - my peas are only just starting to produce. Also - just got my first passionflowers (passiflora incarnata & caerulea) today.

I've gotten a decent crop of Bush Early Girl from July 10 transplants in Ontario Zone 6 (I've since moved to Zone 5). Other later varieties didn't work out as well planted on the same date.

I had a frost last night and 🤞🤞🤞 its the last one. First fall frost is around early , mid . Sept. . I start almost everything indoors in my off grid. Log cabin . I do manxge to get a good bit of food out of my aprgox. 1500 sq. Foot garden.

Birds got beans again....fantastic results otherwise, especially with spinach, snap peas and lettuce thanks to a pretty cool late spring.

😂😂I was laughing at most of what you entailed because that’s exactly how it’s going for my garden Z5a, WI. We had a lot of rain earlier and since fairly regular rain. We are out of drought! But the mosquitoes returned and almost nipped my irrigation with headset and glasses on, sweat running and bug netting to fight with-what a picture-Right? The headset works great but the buzzing in my ears is still there 😅. I did get an early start with low tunnels for brassicas and had first time ever state fair quality Bok Choi and a 7 lb Chinese cabbage which I think may turn into sauerkraut today. Using bug netting also on all brassicas. The cabbage moths were out in April and then disappeared after seeing netting 😅. I may be too early in the Brussels dept. because I planted them early also but like to harvest after a frost. Lol, my husband is on board with expanding the rows and I just put in winter sow onions, corn, amaranth, sorghum and red beans. The race is indeed ON! Race to plant, fertilize, prune, start new beds, remember to start fall seedlings, process berries-you’d think I had a business. It’s been a really great spring here. Although the Mock Orange bloomed 2 weeks early and the catalpa they sort of missed the heat that allows them to give off their wonderful scents. With the heat warnings the next 3 days ‘Maybe’ it will still happen. Had a lot of happy surprises from returning plants/annuals, things I forgot about as they were so small because of warm winter. The new flowers are just starting and I have a gazillion volunteer marigolds, poppies and borage. Tilled up a 20x30’ nettle area and loaded it with not even half of collected flower seeds-they have to go in somewhere. I think I have still a tote full. The area is outside of fenced area so I used blood meal to protect from rabbits and some recycled fence that wasn’t enough but will keep deer hopefully away. I did this in a smaller area couple years ago and it was a glowing display! I’m hoping if I get enough plants established that the wildlife leaves them be. And hope the rain continues as it’s too far away from water. We hauled a lot of water last year in the drought. I still have tomatoes and some from winter sow that I didn’t get planted and is throwing my experiment off. If I can winter sow some vegetables that’s the way I would prefer. You’re not behind, it’s just the weather and plants throwing us off balance. Thanks for the tips about chart, ect. Always appreciated!!

I found that i can plant out a month after the frost date. Its way too cold even after the frost date to plant out most things

We always wondered roughly where you were. Looks like you're not far from our parents, who live on Grand Lake! Best of luck with the heat ahead. We're also transitioning from Spring crops to Summer, and it's not looking like it will be easy.

Have you tried growing sweet potatoes in large bins? I've done them in 30gal storage containers (with holes drilled in the bottom) and they've done well. I think it helps protect them from voles fairly well, although the trailing vines that reach the ground sometimes get nibbled. Our summers are borderline too short/too cool though, with lots of nights in the 50s, sometimes even 40s, and a decent number of days in the 60s in June, a lot in September, and sometimes even a few in August. The weather's only really good for them from June 15 to September 5 here. So I get some tubers, but it feels like a marginal crop. Ohio should be good though. Okra feels marginal too. They did well when I was in Zone 6 in 2021 and 2022, but now that I've moved to Zone 5 I got hardly anything last year. Back in Zone 6, my top varieties were Jing Orange and White Velvet, followed by Clemson Spineless and Red Burgundy, with Jambalaya coming in last. Jambalaya has the reputation of being a top performer, but maybe that's only in the more traditional okra regions (ex the US South) rather than here were it's cooler - maybe that variety needs the 85-100F heat? Or maybe they're more reliant on fertilizer?

This year, I really relate to this video. "Life happens" has been the theme of the season. I had all the best laid plans, spreadsheets, etc. We had a death in the family, a personal "injury" that thankfully turned out to be not much of an injury; a stomach bug/flu; and my new work schedule requires me to travel to DC 2 days per week. I finally got the last basils in the ground and am still planting the last of my crops after failure upon failure, thanks to rodents, pests, and weather. And I decided that this Year 2 of my central PA garden was going to be a major expansion year, so it has been non-stop infrastructure expansion/changing, which put me behind since March. The good news, I have extra room in the garden for creative spacing/placement of "extra" things I wasn't planning on, and I'm finally getting some of the early summer flush. Now I just hope I can keep up w/the watering with the heat coming (mid-90's starting tomorrow for the next 10 days, and no rain in sight!) and my work schedule being what it is. Still have one raised bed to build and install, so looking forward to maybe the fall/winter season being a little calmer! (And cooler). Thanks for putting this video out!! Have you read "Grow a Little Fruit Tree", by Ann Ralph? If not, you should, she teaches how to keep a tree that should grow to a mature height of 40 feet small enough to manage. It would greatly help you with those small trees you have in the garden that are too big to transplant, but you don't want to get too large in your actually gardening space. It's very interesting and informative. I think you would like it.

Yes....nice to here you say was a reason you could be late....my BACK...OMG....things are in LATE...cucumber, squash and zucchini....also....seed germination....I found was very poor this year....that's for all that info that no one else talks about....In my area of 🇨🇦 the last frost date can be the last week of September....yes those DAM flea Beatles are nasty....every year there's aways something that is trouble to get started....I direct sow basil ( 2 weeks ago)...in cold frames...3 ft off the grown...seems to help keep the pest out....but rain...I think you have had alot also....has contributed to alot of weeds....

Freaky weather, hard frost was last day of May usually May 15th. Cold nights below 45 for the first week in June . Temperatures this week is 99 degrees so nope did not plant everything on time. But what is planted has been thriving in this weird weather cycle

Thanks, Jenna. Wonderful encouragement for very late planting this year of summer veggies. Same zone, just north of Columbus. IS MY GARLIC REALLY READY TO HARVEST? Last year was July 4th. I planted in late fall (Johnny's German Extra Hardy). The top leaves have been browning for a couple of weeks. I usually wait for the bottom 3 sets of leaves to dry but not yet.

I've been adding a layer of the brown paper of the leaf recycling bags to help block sunlight beneath my grass/leaves combo mulch. The question is the brown paper something I should continue with? Continue with Bolt sweet corn we love it as you suggested it last season I have some past knee high and still planning the last this week.Thanks

I've had a lot of unexpected health issues lately and so a lot of the seedlings I bought died. I only have a few pepper plants and citrus trees left. Huge waste of money but I'm feeling better now so I'll give it another go.

It’s so defeating knowing the pest pressure isn’t near its height. 😔 I’m just transitioning over to summer crops, and I’m getting clobbered!! 😮 I know I’m not alone, but I have never experienced the pest pressure at this level already. Everyday it’s a new pest destroying a different crop. Now I have tiny grasshoppers EVERYWHERE. 🥵😭

Question? Are you using the large sunflowers as a cover crop. ?????????? I'm following the sunflowers that are raised in a higher well drained location as the best possible place to raise tomatoes plants and this season trying peppers as a replacement for the tomatoes.I'm.expecting the peppers will thrive also following the sunflowers the season after. Goofy year here in WI. Planted some broccoli in wall of waters in mid March, have yet to stick a melon, squash or cucumber in the ground. I do what I can, when I can, hopefully the plants are forgiving. Still have 1/2 dozen cosmos to stick in the dirt. Last year we were in a severe drought, this year plenty of rain, with the rain, slugs, earwigs and mosquitoes. I cannot imagine how you keep up with two massively beautiful gardens, work and raise a family. Two questions! Finally getting some snap peas, should I cover with shade cloth? temps climbing into the 90's this week. Did you condition your hay with organic or synthetic fertilizers? Stay Well!!!

The surround seems to be working on my eggplant with the flea beetles. I also seems to be helping with the potato beetles. We haven't been getting a tremendous amount of rain lately so it's been mangeable to reapply after it does rain. Thanks for that tip. Now tell me what is wrong with my asparagus. I'm extremely frustrated having put so much time into that bed and having an underperform crop this year and only a few plants that have decent ferns now. They just seem to die off over the summer even with all the good compost that's in the beds. I know a lot of the plants were females because of all the volunteers that came up this spring but I think there is something else going on even with all my tender loving care.
