Why would it matter? Russia tried for years to get along, years telling the west that NATO on their borders is a non starter and even tried to join NATO. Russia simply gave up on trying and moved their interest east as a lot of other countries have as well. Russia's economy is booming because of it. Looks like now Russia is just going to turn Ukraine into a DMZ demarcation line between us and the East. I dont think its a positive thing for any of us like your comment appears to suggest. And yes, the Germans sat there twiddling their thumbs after Biden blew up their gas and now their industry is moving operation east to China, Korea and India. If the US convinces all the allies to seize Russia's foreign currency reserves in their Vostro accounts. When that happens, and it likely will, there will be an exodus from the US reserve currency plummeting the US into a financial firestorm taking Canada and others down with it. You enjoyed your 10 minutes of victory, but its a sly move by Putin, a poison pill that will boomerang with devastating effects. Geesh. Should have adhered to the peace deal in 2015 that you cant mention or your comment gets vanished just like Russian TV is banned in the US. Because thats what you do on the verge of WWll, ignore diplomacy. Get your Faraday cage out.

Quite embarrassing to manage to call the Baltic Sea the North Sea, for those of you who don't know, the North Sea is between England and Norway and the Netherlands and Belgium. It can be operated off of unprepared fields like converted road sections and has sensors and weapons the equal or better than any Russian operational fighter. - 5 diesel electric subs including three Gotland class one of the best of its kind. On more than one occasion Swedish subs have penetrated anti-sub screens and destroyed high value targets like aircraft carriers on training operations. - Archer 155mm mobile gun system. Ukrainians state they are the best artillery they have in operation. - 120 Strv 122 MBTs a Swedish highly modified Leopard 2 that is one of the best in the world. The NLAW that has been used to great effect by Ukraine to help stop Russian armor was primarily designed by Saab Bofors in Sweden. Swedish troops are very professional, any battlegroup that Sweden commits to any NATO operation is going to be a highly effective addition.

Actually and this despite Canada not meeting the 2% of GDP standard ,on defense spending , Canada has increased its spending a continuing tremdline up , now spemding on defense approximately as much as Italy. in the last year Canada bought the F 35s,P8s ,MQ 9s , the new Type 26 frigates ordered a couple years back , as wwll as both anti air and anto tank missile systems for Canadas troops in Latvia ,as part of the Nato mission there. so while Canada can and should be doing more it isnt nothing either ,the Arctic patrol ships coming in and with surface navy almost as large as russias northern fleet ,about as big as Spains, Canada alao expandimg both its troop size ,to brigade strength in and continuing the leadership of the Nato battlegroup in Latvia , having done so since that was put in in 2017

What can Sweden bring to NATO in 2024? Frankly, a heck of a lot more than what Canada offers in 2024. I’m a retired 3rd generation Canadian service member. x1 Grandfather x2 Uncles + my father then my service 1967-96. We were all frontline. Army ( Grandfather, x1 uncle & myself) x1 Uncle Navy & my father airforce. Military presence from the late 1800s to 1996. Since the end of WW2 both traditional governing parties of Canada have diminished our military. The last Canadian PM to meet the NATO 2% target was PET. Fact. Since him all have reduced numbers of personnel, current equipment & military budgets. Canada has been a freeloader in both NORAD & NATO for generations. We have great personnel. Too few of them. Poorly supported due to Canadian voting public indifference for generations. Both governing parties know this & thus don’t support the Canadian military. So yes, Sweden is a motivated new member of NATO. Canada, not so much.

We all took out the peace dividend, and basically we all disarmed to a minimum 15 years ago. Putin made us rearm, the nearest neighbours first, and the rest later. Canada has just felt more protected by the oceans than the Europeans, but Russia is a threat to Canada as well.

Regarding capabilities after been neutral for 200 years. Don’t confuse neutral with defenseless. For Sweden the main enemy has been Russia for the past 300 years and we’ve prepared to defend ourselves against them forever. To the point we during the early stages of the Cold War had the worlds fourth largest air force. There’s a certain focus that comes from knowing who you plan to defend yourself against.
