Investigating crime report maps in any given city reveals that certain neighborhoods have disproportionate amounts of crime to an exponential degree. Perhaps having the military patrol high crime neighborhoods will bring peace to those neighborhoods seeing as how the police are ineffective at keeping crime at bay. I've long lost patience with the failures of our nation to solve problems and approach all political angles and issues as a fixer of problems. We need clear and direct solutions, not waffling or weak handed approaches. Ending the era of limp wristed politics and instead focusing on direct, hard, scientific solutions to problems should be the goal. Fundamentally I blame libertarianism and the libertarian mindset for most problems in the world. Anti-vaxxers are one thing, but abolish the police is another bad idea just as bad as anti-vaxxers. All of these toxic movements are destabilizing society to the point where cracks are starting to appear because people are promulgating bad ideas to an exponential degree, which results in deteriorating conditions... Rising crime, political destabilization, economic disorder, etc.

Best indictment of the whole "good guy with a gun solves bad guy with a gun" argument is the 2019 shooting in Dayton, Oh. A man opened fire on a crowded outdoor bar patio and cops responded quickly and had shot the guy 32 seconds after he opened fire. THIRTY TWO SECONDS between the first shot being fired and him being killed by the good guys with guns. In that time he killed nine and injured 17 more. The absolute best case scenario for "good guy solves bad guy" is 9 dead and 17 injured.

That's a very open ended theme he's brought up. Most domestic situations are not about firearms, but disputes, violence toward women(who should be armed)), and children who fall victim to... violent older boys. Can't call them men. Most cops assume firearms are possible but Stewart paints that a bleak story each time to lean toward officer safety...which wasn't he hating on cops in 2020-21? So JS hates guns and us who own them, but if he ONCE ever had a security detail, then he needs to be called out. He is so self righteous, I'd love to know more of his personal (real) life outside of TV and this platform

As a domestic violence survivor, me having a firearm would have backfired on me. Why? Because my ex always went through my things and if I hid anything, I would have been in more “trouble”. Also, he was quicker than me- he would likely get to my gun before me. My daughters school gave me a phone for emergencies only. They told me not to tell him. Had I NOT told him, he would have broke the phone when he found it (not if) and beat me. I had to tell him. At least though he knew it was from the school and that they were suspicious of him, so he likely wouldn’t have done anything to it. Or would have relied on me telling the school it fell in the toilet or our daughter broke it.

And men who are found guilty of domestic violence who are forced into counseling, only about 2% make any progress... So let's step back, and ask why men are growing up to become violent toward women? IMHO it starts with these words: "big boys don't cry". Forcing little boys to suppress their feelings rather than learning how to grow emotionally, just might be a problem... Of course, if boys who have fathers who beat their mothers, and they grow up modeling that behavior, that is a problem too. @@BaiginLong Haha, when did I say that? It's already illegal to own a firearm if you have any domestic abuse felonies or misdemeanors. It's misleading to suggest that it isn't illegal like he does throughout this video. The people who want to take guns away are also the ones that have been pushing for and making bail "reforms" and letting out violent criminals over and over. Law makers and judges are undermining the criminal justice system and new laws for things that are already illegal won't change anything. Also the chart they showed for a second was extremely misleading. Jon says that studies show that more guns means more deaths but that chart specifically shows gun deaths. Switzerland is much higher on the chart than the UK even though they have 1/4th the murders that the UK has and the overall murder rate of the UK is much closer to the US than this chart shows. Just another example of people using statistics out of context to prove their improvable points.

The domestic violence argument is something even my pro second amendment family is pretty in support of. If you have a history of multiple domestic violence complaints and convictions then it should be far more difficult, if not outright banned for you to have a gun. The issue is the percentage of these domestic violence situations where the culprit already can't own a gun for prior felonies and still has one. Here in Colorado even if you are charged with anything DV, your guns are taken away. Seems pretty straight forward to me. Not sure why other states cannot get onboard with that. I support the right to have guns in the hands of the right people, but people who commit violent crimes, even while only charged, should not have access to guns. Honestly after serving in the military and having grown up around guns and hunters, it perplexes me why people who do purchase guns do not have mandatory training and safety awareness. If there is one thing that should have safety over done it is gun ownership. There should be a mandatory two week training done for anyone buying a gun. That is less then the amount i had prior to even going into the military.

Perfect balance of a sound, well reasoned argument about an important social issue, without spinning every systemic cultural problem into a catastrophe, and keeping on topic with relevant humor throughout the segment, rather than detouring into absurdist nonsense. Just great stuff. More people need to appreciate just how clear the leading indicators for violent outbursts are. Domestic Violence is a signal that the individual and family culture views violence as a normal form of social interaction, and a means to an end. And as always, theres an underlying socio-economic problem at the heart of domestic violence. "Lock them up" and "take their guns" are important measures for the end of the process flow, but the real change is made upstream, identifying why these young men and women are growing in environments that normalize violence and abuse.

As a former law enforcement officer I believe we do not need more gun laws but simply need to enforce the ones we have. I do however think gun owners should be required to receive proper gun safety training and obtain a permit to purchase a firearm. My wife and I both obtained our CCW permits even though she does not carry one I believed it important for her to have it. I am uncomfortable with people who should not be allowed to have a firearm, such as a convicted felon, purchase one from an individual. I personally would not sell a firearm to anyone who did not have a permit to carry one since a felon cannot obtain a permit. I know people go crazy over the constitutional carry idea but we need to be practical. The reason the current gun laws aren't enforced is simple. They don't deter criminal behavior. Stricter, more restrictive gun laws don't affect the criminals' behavior, only the law abiding gun owners, which is exactly the aim of gun control proponents.

I’m so glad Jon covered this. The solution to the gun debate is one where both sides of the argument can be happy with the result. I genuinely believe we do not even need to ban guns like AKs or ARs. 24,000 of the 43,000 gun violence deaths last year were because of suicide. If we improved our healthcare system, we drastically reduce the number. Simply closing loopholes and getting guns away from domestic abusers reduces it even more. Address the severe poverty that many people of color are in, that number goes down even farther. Couple that with improving the background check system, and we could stop most of these deaths from happening and still allow people to own what they want. Not to mention the addition of an improved quality of life. It’s such a straightforward solution that it infuriates to no end how much it is ignored.

I believe, and it’s been awhile since I’ve checked the different states’ firearms laws so correct me if I’m wrong, but depending on the state, there is a possibility that you don’t have to go through a background when buying rifle or a shotgun. That to me should be fixed.

@@BrianHolmes Sadly, I was being serious. How many cases do we hear about home invasions that end when the mother or teenager are able to access a firearm and defend themselves? You cannot be shown 1 singular statistic without viewing all of the statistics surrounding Domestic Violence cases where one party protected their lives with one. More importantly, this entire debate is disenfranchised to begin with. To make a case that domestic violence perpetrators wouldn’t have been able to kill if they didn’t have a firearm, is suggestive that they were legally allowed to have one to begin with. Criminals don’t care about laws. I’m tempted to believe criminals don’t even care about the punishments anymore, because of (in my opinion) the lack of public display and severity. We need common sense reform, and the issue is not the firearm. Edit: let’s be clear, personally, I would never wish for a shootout. I pray I never have to use my firearm in self defense. But good people who carry protection, are not the ones making those decisions. Or do you believe they are?

@@yohanthegr8959 There are laws that aren't enforced and there are mental health issues never addressed in this country. To say that the best course of action is more weapons is ludicrous to a rational mind. In my opinion the amount of weapons in our hands is untenable, what is necessary now is thorough education on the safe handling of these by society. Hell, we don't even have the basic training for actors when it comes to firearms and you want to arm family members in the name of security?
