I'm a teacher. I cannot tell you how many times I have looked at my classroom and thought "how would I react in case of an active shooter? Would I be quick? Would I freeze? How would I protect kids when I am a woman and 5 feet tall to top it off. How do I leave kids behind if they are hit? Is this window by my desk a weak spot in my class" There are many more of those questions. I have had other jobs. I never had these thoughts before. I am tired of the active shooter drills, the training, the videos, having to think about barricating doors, using tables as shields, and having to look around the classroom for possible weapons to defend ourselves. That is not something kids and teachers should have yearly trainings on, but we do. Would I try to defend my kids, absolutely. But, that isn't normal. No, one exit wouldn't work, no you should not arm the teachers, we are educators. Cops on campus have not worked in many cases, and we don't need more religion on campus. We need roofs, books, chairs, materials, more emotional support for our kids, we need more supplies for homeless kids, and programs to better engage our boys and girls. Turning a school into a war zone with bullet proof tapestries and shock glass or whatever sounds like the dumbest thing I ever heard. Please remember schools are for education and our kids need to feel safe while learning and not feel like they can get shot at any minute.

I find it crazy how trained officers refused to engage with an assailant armed with an ar15 but so many expect teachers to do it.

My Brother has lived in West Sussex for 20 yrs... he came home to America for a visit this past January and one of the first things he couldn't get use to was the state and Religious involvement that America has on our schools. He said exactly what Trevor said. No one goes to Church. It's literally not a thing.

"You don't need a gun, call the police" is like saying "you don't need a fire extinguisher, call the fire department."

"Trapping the shooter like a rat"? Does he realise, that when you close the doors to trap the shooter, he is already in the school and you trap the other kids with him?

Just a quick note on the whole "one way in" policy. Ignoring for the moment that it makes it easier for a shooter to prevent escape and creates nightmare scenarios for the fire department, right now every school I've ever been too only ever has 1 Door that students can enter anyways. There are other doors, but they all require a special key to open from the outside and automatically lock after they close. The main entrance is usually locked and is unlocked electronically by administrators once they verify who is entering. Yet we still have shootings. Thus the "one entry" policy is already a failure.

The "one way in and one way out of the school" idea is incredible. He honestly didn't stop to think about something as basic as a fire drill, or uh...an actual fire. Wow.
