You don’t need to wonder with Nintendo. The Pokémon company would’ve shut down Palworld three years ago if they thought they had a case. Palworld took a great concept and then made something fun with it.

I don't think it's about shutting down Palworld, but rather about specific desings. Not All pals pull from pokemon, some are original, and until the game released, not every pal was out there to be analyzed. Unlike a C&D when fangames straight up use nintendo IP, a litigation process - especially one that deals with plagiarism - probably has nintendo now consulting with multiple IP lawyers and consultants to asses on a 1:1 pokemon design to pal design basis, how strong of a case they would have. Not saying that it would happen but also saying that there's plenty of reason why nothing was done until release. Listen to the Kit & Krysta video on the subject, they used to work with PR within nintendo and they give some great insider knowledge on how they operate

Normally I’d agree but if they DID steal character models, you wouldn’t be able to prove that until after the game launched. I think The Pokemon Company (not Nintendo because contrary to popular belief I don’t think they’d be the ones filing legal action here) thought this game fly under the radar as ‘just another cheap knock off’ and even now I think they’d rather not draw attention to it. They probably expect this will all blow over and people will have forgotten about it in six months. It’ll be interesting to see what happens either way.

I feel like an aspect you may have missed is how the game's unhinged design lent itself to many "shocking" viral moments shared on social media. Things like, catching a human, slaughtering your adorable pals, catching a pal you should be able to right now, and someone's house burning down after being attacked by fire Pals. Combine this with recognizable streamers reacting to these and you have a recipe for a lot of word of mouth to be generated.

My takeaway is that: - if you leave enough of pent up demand, for long period of time. - even the copycat of a product everyone desires will suffice. Nintendo could have broken all the sales records if they’d produce a current gen console version of Pokémon using their Zelda experience. They took too long. Now someone ate a chunk of their cake.

There's some genuine, human consideration that has gone into this design, even if we JUST take into account the obvious instances where the Devs said: "What is the obvious expectation here? What are the deep DESIRES Pokemon fans WANT out of a Pokemon game-- desires that GameFreak have consistently failed to satisfy?" That is a creative decision, as well as a tactical decision.

When your angle is this game is a knockoff that means you don't understand what is happening. This game offers more than what the "original" does so how does it become a knockoff? Is In and Out a knockoff of McDonald's? More 19M have been playing Palworld and they haven't been out a month. What kind of mere knockoff gets these kinds of player base? Lol.

I swear, you either get activists for some entirely unrelated political cause, or people desperate to "elevate the industry" powered solely on the updraft of their own farts. It's embarrassing to see how salty people are over some rando gaining financial success by just saying, "Fine, I'll do it myself."

The CEO of pocket pair has been pretty open about not having a creative vision. However, I would disagree with him. I was thinking the other day that Palworld is exactly the kind of game a little kid would make if you asked them to make their dream game. They would just smash all their favorite games together so that they would have one thing that had everything they loved. It's a seemingly immature vision but it is a vision, and honestly one that the industry is severely lacking these days. So many games these days feel like they work out the monetization of the game before they work out how to make the game fun. Palworld decided to throw everything they liked into a blender and then tweak it until all its systems fit together, then they threw it out at a budget price with no microtransactions. Their primary concern was making the game fun, rather than being original or finding ways to make a feedback loop that nickles and dimes their customers. The question now is how much will they commit to the game? If they continue to support it I can see it being a billion dollar franchise. If they don't. well... I'll still say I got my moneys worth. Though I think I would be disappointed. The game is a lot of fun but I think its also impossible to play it without seeing the potential for it to be even better.

That the age old adage of "Sex Sells" still holds, and will continue to hold weight in our modern society. You have a game that is essentially just ARK with Pokémon (not a bad thing, but admittedly unoriginal and slapdash), but the advertisements, which banked heavily on shock value, managed to endear everyone and their mothers to it, especially disgruntled Pokémon fans.

There's a whole lot that's said that amounts to saying that the game has no creative vision but I really couldn't disagree more. They clearly had a creative vision, something that took hold so strongly that they had to pivot from their other game to make this. They ended up giving us what we all didn't know we wanted and they created whole new ways to approach the genre. You're not just looking for Pals to fill your team, like in Pokemon, but you're also looking for all sorts of reasons to scoop them up and improve your base, collect traits, and more. It's genius, really.

you see here. the thing is.. and what i respect (its not a lot of respect but its there) about the Developers at PocketPair, they where designing the game to be fun. not groundbreaking, not original, but fun. and i think that is what a lot of game companies these days are missing. for most of the big companies... its not about fun anymore, games feel like a second job some days. i cant remember the last time i have been excited for anything made by Activision or EA. but these companies stopped making games more fun and just started selling us the same game over and over again, because they where too focused on profit to have fun. and as much as you can argue that nothing that PocketPair are doing is original... you can say that the idea's they copied came together in such a new way. Pokémon's problem is, at this point it feels like once you have played one you have played them all. sure they add a new type every now and then or a new gimmick that only stays for one game but its core is still 'just a Pokémon game' the same turn based strategy. it does get stale after a while.
@cathygrandstaff1957
@cathygrandstaff1957 3 ай бұрын
Yeah but maybe that’s part of what the Pokémon fanbase wants. If there’s a type of game you like and a franchise fits into it you don’t really want the franchise to try to reinvent itself just to please fans that don’t like that genre. Take Final Fantasy for example: after 10 they basically started trying to reinvent what had been a stellar turn based RPG into an action RPG because they thought that’s what the American demographic wanted and classic Final Fantasy fans are pissed because we haven’t had a good Final Fantasy in over a decade. Sure each game feels different, but is that a good thing when it’s a bad kind of different? On the other hand Dragon Quest uses more or less the same battle system it always has and is more popular than ever because it scratches that turn based demographic that Final Fantasy abandoned.

I get that there's obvious Pokemon parallels, but the Monster Tamer genre IS a genre. Games like Digimon, Monster Rancher, Azure Dreams, Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh GX, Dragon Drive, there are just so many games along this concept. While Pokemon has become the de facto name in the arena it is by no means the only game in town, and it never has been.

Exactly, and it’s not copying the genre tropes that skeptics take issue with, it’s the blatant “legally distinct” approach to design, almost across the board. If this game featured fully original character designs I think there’d be no controversy whatsoever, BUT let’s be real, this was a calculated decision. They KNEW pursuing copypasta designs would take care of their marketing in and of itself, and the tried and tested survival/crafting tropes would keep people hooked (speaking as someone who they work on lol). I don’t plan on touching this game for multiple reasons, I don’t begrudge people enjoying a product made to be a product, I REALLY wish GameFreak/The Pokemon Company would step up their game… but I do not like the precedent that rewarding this kind of design sets.

@@D3stinySm4sher Direhowl looks just like Tiger from Monster Rancher, as well as Ranga from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime... and every other hyped-up wolf-type in anime. Same with the Penguins and most of the rest, because they're based on real-world animals. It wasn't soulless, they wanted to make a fun game that people would just enjoy, rather than attempting to tell people what they want. Even if we look at Pal Spheres, SO many other ways this has been done in monster-tamer games. Spheres, Balls, Cards, Mystery Discs, Sigils, they've all been done in anime, manga, and video games. There is literally no way for them to make a monster-taming game without leaning into one of those territories. But they DID innovate, giving a vast open world, adding in elements of survival akin to ARK, fun ways of traversal like the Glider a la Breath of the Wild and a few other games that used gliders. And ALL of these games generally base their monster on real-world creatures or mythical ones. They ALSO allow the capture of humans, which is a bit of a first. Also, no insane laundry list of guys just standing around in the tall grass waiting for you to get in eyeline before challenging you to a Pal Battle. The idea of getting raided, being able to PROPERLY use your Pokemon outside of combat to build up your bases. You don't really buy Spheres in the game, you craft them yourself, and can eventually automate the process by finding better blueprints, and upgrading spheres as you go. Dragons? We've done pretty much everything you can do with dragons, so whatever they designed was, again, going to hit something. Cities Skylines was born out of SimCity dropping the ball, and dropping it hard. NO ONE gave them crap for it. Basically EVERY FPS game is built off of Quake, and the Unreal Tournament engine. It's not that they ripped off Pokemon, it's that Pokemon is so ubiquitous, and holding over 1000+ creatures, so there was never going to be a world where they didn't get compared to Pokemon.

I think the most important thing from Palworld to learn is, how important good Marketing is. From the initial annoucement, that line "Pokemon with guns" stuck. Even though the released title as not much in common with a pokemon game, gameplay wise. But in a world where on average about 38 games per day are released on Steam, you need something to stand out. Even if its just a marketing ploy, because otherwise, Palworld is pretty unimaginative. There are tons of Open-World-Survival-Crafting games outthere, even with AI buddies. Its solide take on the genre, but nothing groundbreaking. Even quiet far from it. But is was marketed well from the start, and that was the key to success.

The difference between Palworld and what we have been seeing from AAA studios is QUILITY first, it is great to see at least some sort of polish to a game and being derivative in a good way. A lot of what was "stolen" is in a better concept than the original. Considering that this is an indie dev it still feels solid when playing it. This is a game made to be played and not just some bad game with Marvel or DC spread on top (These use to be great games and now it just feels like an agenda). The only thing that can ruin this game is if it implements a bad story to the game.

Why would Pokemon have exclusive rights to create animated characters based on Egyptian historical documents. In fact, the Palworld one looks like the Egyptian drawings. And a animated wolves, squirrels, mice, etc. They can't take Nintendo drawings and use those. They absolutely can create animated animals based on real animals and mythology. I think to me part of what's making Palworld stick out and connect with people is its confidence and transparity about what it is. In a world with Raid Shadow Legends pretending it's this big epic MMO, Call of Duty is this prestiegous brand, or even Candy Crush pretending it's a cute match 3 game and not a slot machine, it's refreshing to see ridiculous slop like this come out and just be open about the fact that it's just slop. It's like somebody took one of those shitty mobile game ads and actually made it into a real game without any strings attached. You see a Pokemon holding a gun and you know the game is kind of garbage, but it's compelling garbage and you're getting exactly what you thought you were buying. It honestly kind of reminds me of Vampire Survivors.

I don’t think Pokémon will add guns just because I think in universe humans never developed what we think of as conventional weapons because Pokémon were more powerful than the most primitive guns. I mean think about musket vs squirtle, you fire the musket once, the squirtle takes a bit of damage and then blasts you to high heaven while you’re trying to reload. And of course if guns count as a normal type attack they’d be completely ineffective against ghosts and mostly useless against rock and steel. So I think there was more tactical incentive to develop Pokeball technology to contain Pokémon instead of making weapons to fight them. I also kind of like the fact that Pokémon, unlike most RPGs including most monster tamers, has our human child protagonist being virtually helpless except for what they can get Pokémon to do for them. So I think having the trainer participate doesn’t feel like Pokemon. Eh, maybe it would make sense if they did something like a game about the Great War in Pokémon X and Y and have your protagonist be a young warrior joining the fight with their Pokémon.

Pokemon doesn't need to add gun. They just need the gameplay and the mechanic. We could have a pikachu on shoulder use thunder ball instead. It's just how to show it. I mean if you think about it, we capture animal then make them fight for sport. Sound wrong, but it just a game in the end. Some Suspension of disbelief are need for just entertainment.

i don't think that combining several aspects from existing games into a new one is bad, it's been happening for years. and just because the game was made reletivly cheaply clearly doesn't mean it's a bad game. I'm glad that there's a pokemon-esque game that's not hogtied to the switches limited hardware. pokemon has essentially been a monopooly for the longest time and had gotten lazy and now that palworld is here it's a shock to the system.

Palworld is so popular because there´re many who wanted a monster catcher in similar artstyle as Pokemon and haven´t played Pokemon in a long, just one not clearly made for little kids and Palworld is excactly that. Palworld targets more an adult audience as I think and they did what those who quit were asking someone to do. And there´s more why grown ups left Pokemon (not all) they started to look like sh*t at some point, I didn´t wanted to play a game looking at such fugly monsters.

a better feature for a sense of bond, different expression just like palworld, let pokemon helped u in certain task, since pokemon's trainer does ntg but command pokemon when battle, maybe more expression could be made in combat? and being able to interact better just like palworld or even better for stuff like riding/surfing etc, current pokemon just does not deliver as much bonding as palworld imo

The real lesson of Palworld is no matter who is using an old or new idea, if you aren't utilizing it in a way that is fun, then you're the one lacking creativity and talent. There was a clear and deliberate strategy when it came to what game mechanics to combine to create an addictive feedback loop that constantly cycles between different aspects that all interact with one another seamlessly. I cant understand the 'souless' argument when so much effort was put to making these mechanics work together. If anything the fact it looks so similar to pokemon is not so much copying for the sake of stealing ideas, but rather to prove a point that game devs with all these tools and assets aren't taking advantage of what they have, leaving its potential hidden, and this is what you can do with it. besides theres no such thing as a truly original concept.

but noah just said it, "anubis," but then "hard to defend" as if pokemon owns anubis? i think palworld is directly adopting the ideas from pokemon that they have done, and thats it. pokemon or anyone else dont own the concept of "dog" not even "electric dog (and symbols of electricity)," those are too broad of ideas for patenting or even trademarking (at least it fricken better be). just an add on, like briefly shown in the vid, these companies would patent to own anything if they could, they will make a monopoly however they can if theres the slightest of loopholes.

Nintendo had every single opportunity to create an immersive Pokemon game like this in the past ten years and they stubbornly dug their heads into the sand and presented its fans with iterative, disappointing releases like Arceus and Scarlet/Violet. If anything, Nintendo should be grateful that Palworld has proved the market and all but guaranteed that a modern, innovative Pokemon game would sell out of this world.

This games makes more sense from the old Pokemon. Pokemon were used as slaves, hard workers in the pokemon world, and were food for humans and other pokemons like carnivores.. Unfortunately they made more sales with children so everything had to be Soft Rated lol. But this is literally how I express myself if it was a pokemon game. Pikachu were made to help run the labs by generating huge amount of electricity. But you would never see that shit happen in Pokemon but in PaL World you see it all.

Saying Legends: Arceus is restricted by the hardware is silly when BOTW and TOTK are right there. I hate when people compare them but I'm saying with how good they look and how big the map is and the variety of enemies/npcs there is no excuse for Pokémon not being able to utilize that for their games. They have become lazy and everyone in the community knows it. Hopefully this lights a fire under their butts and they do better because they CAN do better.

Sure the chimes are spot on, but there was gliders before BotW, there was check points, teleporting, climbing, weapon degradation, anime art styles ect... BotW was not unique, it borrowed 90% of it mechanics and style from all over the place. Palworld, simply did the same. If you are someone that screams "BotW!" everytime a game does something similar, just remember Nintendo didn't invent BotW they built it on the shoulders of the industry at large.

I think comparing palworld to pokemon is stupid because those who actually play the game unless they are actively looking for similarities to get mad at they will realise that the game is completely different from pokemon and catching monsters that have powers is not something pokemon owns there are so many games that are similar not to mention pokemon stole multiple pokemon designs from dragon quest but nobody mentions that because its not convenient some if the comparisons they make feel like a massive stretch if you don't look at it when trying to find something to get mad about like a good example direhowl is just a black and white wolf but people compare it to lycanrock when the only similaritie is that they are both wolves as if pokemon own the rights to have wolves in games the only pal that actually looks like a pokemon is verdash that looks like more masculine grass version if cinderace that one I will admit dose but the others are a massive stretch and it was revealed that the person who compared the models side by side faked the evidence because he didn't like what the players can do to pals if they want

3:58 we just had to make back handed comment against digimon huh? It's not ripping off Tamagochi, its a sub brand of it. They where both a Bandai Namco product and the producer of Tamagochi made digimon to appeal to boys as they assumed the Cutesy style of Tamagochi won't cater to the demographic enough. The western sentiment of Digimon being a Pokemon knock-off is rooted to the western misinformed belief back then that Pokemon, Digimon, and Power Rangers were complete homegrown american brands. :v thinking a rival network made Digimon solely to be a Pokemon Bootleg despite having nothing in common except otherworldly creatures with childrens involved.

The Epitome of Nintendo ignoring the other 90% or gamers... THAT IS PALWORLD... the late eighties and most of the nineties generation has reached the age where nostalgia is the strongest. And typically at the age where buying what you want when you want. I am getting a massive vibe that the hardcore Pokémon community absent Nintendo is just pure flaming jealously. Mentioning several of the pals that seemingly are straight rips from Pokémon, many of them are based on real world animals, mythical figures and creatures. On the topic of "clone" or plagiarism, We wouldn't have Elder Scrolls and Diablo without Ultima And Wizardry. The nineties were a "clone wild west", Intellectual Property and Copyright has limited the next clone improving on features of its predecessors.

Just to clarify, the modeler accused of fabricating the comparisons was accused by someone with 0 understanding of 3d modeling because they had mentioned the models were proportionally re-scaled for comparison. Re-scaling is a non-deforming process that doesn't even need to touch the mesh. If a company copies my poster artwork but puts in an outdoor, it doesnt cease to be a copy just cuz it's in a different scale

I was disappointed the copied models bit was swept aside so quickly in this video because to me, that’s the entire issue I have with the game. I mean, yea, it’s a soulless cash-grab but a ton of those exist, it is what it is, consumers gonna consume. But given the quickly approaching genAI storm at the shores of creative industries, I feel endorsing and defending this kind of behavior is… not great? Especially if the models were indeed stolen (which we don’t know but, hoo boi is it worth investigating).
@Hugop_arts

@@D3stinySm4sher yeah I tend to stop short of saying plagiarism or stolen assets but - as a 3D modeler - the odds of MULTIPLE assets overlapping THAT MUCH with other existing assets is just… too much. Once or twice is a coincidence but this much is a pattern. And anyone saying “ah but it’s slightly different, ah look at the topology”, if they know *anything* about 3D pipeline for games they’d know that you often remesh when sculpting or adding to an existing mesh, to merge it all together, and towards the end you tend to retopologize the whole thing to make it more performant, and then bake the details down into normal maps. The only way the meshes would be identical is if they had only recolored these things

I think the way I can explain the Palworld game is, it's organic on its way of being a game, it uses a lot of stuff from other games but the way it plays, it's all organic that you wont feel that it wasn't meant to be there at all. and a lot of indie games just borrow games trying to reinvent a mechanic but fails to make it organically functioning in the game it self, where Palworld successfully implements it without you noticing it. it's also how Leathal Company does on the system it self, it's clunkly but how everyone I've seen playing the game, it felt that the game was original and funny at the same time despite the gameplay is like phasmophobia and deep rock galactic.
