In this video:
The first modern directional signal was patented in 1925 by Edgar A. Walz, Jr., although no one was interested in it either, at least until after his patent expired 14 years later. That’s when, in 1939, the U.S. automaker Buick first introduced the “Flash-Way Directional Signal,” which operated in the familiar way - a stick, mounted on the steering column. In its original incarnation, this turn signal only flashed the rear lights; by the next year, front lights were flashing as well. By the end of WWII, directional signals were standard in most American automobiles.

This isn't so unique . Guess how electric Christmas light get to flash? They use the same type of bi-metallic element that heats up and opens the circuit. The original and larger bulbs has the flasher in each. The newer tiny bulbs has one white bulb with the flasher inside and in series with all the others. If that bulb burned out or was removed, the lights never turn on. Now we have LED lights and an electronic circuit in a box that controls them.

The other annoying factor I've noticed when using a turn signal is that people try to close the gap when you signal for a lane chang. Nearly got in a pretty bad wreck the other week after I signaled to merge, and the guy in the other lane tried to block me. He was about 60 feet back going the same speed I was, until he saw my signal and floored it.

In most modern cars what you are hearing is the relay, the flashing signal is all done via the cars body control module (computer) and it also monitors the resistance of the turn signal bulbs so that if one is to go out, it will trigger hyper flash to alert you one of your turn signals is out. On some newer cars today the relay is actually located under the hood or there simply is none and the clicking sound is actually played through the cars front speakers

Dan, you are half right. The sound of the clicking is added after complaints about the new soundless indicators. Companies added the sound, nothing to do with tradition, more like people think that's the way it's meant to be now. A friend who's hobby is cars told me this earlier this year.

I'm not completely familiar with European regulations, but I do believe that there is a requirement to tell the driver when a bulb is out. The good news is that newer modules can sense how much current they are outputting, so you can get a warning in your instrument cluster when the controller senses a significant change.

In a Tesla, the clicking sound is completely synthetic. The car computer controls the light blinking, and the sound you hear is just a prerecorded click played over the stereo speakers. You can tell this if you restart the infotainment system and while it's booting up you turn on a turn signal - it works, but no clicky.

My car has a solid state flasher, and the clicky sound comes from a speaker under the dash. If my blinker is on and my "fasten seat belt" indicator both want to play noise through the speaker, the seatbelt bell wins out and the clicky blinker goes silent until the seatbelt system releases control of the speaker.

Can confirm about the Cobalt. For some reason my door open/key-in/lights on warning sound goes completely silent. The blinkers make no sound either when this is occuring. Long ago the auto return function of the turn signal stalk ceased to function so I already manually switch them off so it's not a detriment to me. But I have left my lights on at work and been told by a customer (since I couldn't hear the warning after taking my keys out and the lights still being on)

Bimetallic relays are rarely used, Most common are the electromechanical ones, which will almost always blink faster when you lessen the load. -Common problem when converting to leds where people buy so called "can-bus"-leds (which is totally bollocks since all they have is a high current resistor in parallel with the led electronics. canbus is a form of automotive communications network btw) :)
@Xenro66
@Xenro66 8 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking.... But why don't they just use really simple timing ICs with electronic relays? They're incredibly cheap, and the timing will never be affected by what bulb/LEDs/load you use. Edit: Nvm, I clearly wasn't paying attention to the video XD

Interestingly, I would really prefer to have the blink speed be affected by failure of one or more lights. This change in speed doesn't specifically change the purpose nor impact the function of the blinkers, but also serves to inform the diver to check the blinkers and get it fixed, post haste.

I think the clicking as an audible feedback that the blinkers are on is valuable. Even though I know people who happily drive with the blinkers on for 10 minutes, even though there is a light flashing on the dashboard and there is a clicking sound. I don't understand how people can be unable to hear and see those signals.

On most cars nowadays there is no clicker of any kind and the sound is produced by a sound file played by you sound system. When I replaced my radio, I lost the click sound and door chimes and had to replace with with a module that made the sound.

most modern cars have a solid state flasher, generally integrated into a general purpose electronic control module. The fact that you still hear a clicking noise is often because these components have a literal speaker built into them for the express purpose of emitting the clicking sound, as customers dislike the turn signal being silent.

The second type of blinker called "electronic" is only using an electrolytic capacitor, around 100 uF, 25 volt to induce a delay from active to inactive (it keep voltage flowing thru the coil until discharged) and a resistor to create a delay from inactive to active (slowing the charge rate of the capacitor). In other word, the capacitor charge slowly thru the resistor then discharge slowly thru the relay coil. These blinkers speed-up when the current decrease. This is useful to remind the driver that a light is burned. The fast click and fast light in the dash board attract attention. The other drivers and police can also notice the fast blinker and politely remind the driver to take care of his/her car better.

Yes, you right... almost:0 It is true what you say, but 20-30 years ago I'm affraid. Proof: Drive your car and put indicator/blinker on. It makes that clicking sound. Now gently pull your hand brake on. Now, you look on dashboard and your blinker/indicator is still "blinking", but you can't hear anything for about 2 seconds, which after that car gives you warning signal "beep beep beep" - that your handbrake is on. After another 2 seconds of silence the "blinking" sound resumes. I'm from UK and not sure if in America with an automated gearboxes you even have manual handbrakes. Sorry to say, but if you would, you wouldn't talk a lot of crap about that sound. In other words, your "blinking" sound - simply comes from... speaker:)

I would actually also expect there to be less current, so slower warm-up time so slower blinking... Hmm.
@Hotrodelectric
@Hotrodelectric 7 жыл бұрын
Simon has it wrong. The frequency increases with a dead bulb because there isn't enough resistive load on the flasher. Most flashers are designed to give a constant rate with a given load- nominally about 20 watts (not quite 2 amps) x2. Take away one of those bulbs, and the rate increases. Electronic flashes are much more stable, as the electronics inside determine flash rate, not the amount of load.

In every car I have owned (my first and oldest car was a 1970 Chevrolet Nova, bought in 1970), the flasher (and its associated "inside light" on the dashboard), blink much FASTER when the signal filament in EITHER the front OR the rear bulb is burned out, and returns to normal speed when it is replaced. The last bulb I had to replace was in a 2006 Ford Focus. So apparently there is a timing circuit which senses whether both bulbs are drawing current, and if not, speeds up the flashing by a factor of four or so (like the difference between the normal busy signal on the telephone network and the "fast busy" when the trunk circuits are busy). Time for a followup video, maybe?

And that's why some aftermarket LED turn signals (bulbs of whole units for motorcycles) come with power resistors that are to be wired in series with the LEDs to compensate for the lower resistance. Although it's preferable to install an electronic flasher in place of the bimetalic one.

Most modern cars have a solid state "relay". It is basically just a MOSFET, controlled by software. The clicking sound is still kept, since drivers are so used to it. So if you have a newer car, you probably have an artificial clicking sound. Interestingly it's the same with the white noise you here when using your phone. Most countries use digital signals for landlines and all cell phones transmit information with digital signals, so there should be no white noise, but it is artificially added, since people are so used to it, that they would assume the other person was disconnected, if the hear nothing while they are talking.
@raymondramirez9177

Newer cars use the BCM (Body Control Module) to flash the lights when the turn (or emergency) signal is on. It is solid state module and generates an audio tick because some country laws require both the audio and visual indicators to inform and remind the driver that the turn or emergency signal is on. Some will even get louder if the turn signal is on for an extended time since some drivers forget the turn or never intended to turn at all. The BCM also has a current sense to determine if a bulb is burned out, so if you replace the factory incandescent bulb for an LED, you will need a load resistor in parallel to the LED and return the original load current to the BCM sensor. Since the LED will not burn out (unless it is mistreated), the resistor fools the BCM to see the original current always. That resistor will warm up while the turn signal is on, but will not drain the 12V battery unless the emergency signal is turned on. The BCM monitors the battery voltage and will power all the lights off (including the emergency lights) if the voltage drops anyway. Even newer cars have all LED turn lights, so the BCM will never need a load resistor. And it is always the driver's duty to check that all the turn signal, brake, and running lights are operating before driving, or else you might get visited on the road by your friendly policeman.

Old (the ones I have are from the 1950s) Christmas "flashers" used the Bi- metallic principal on a 120V household circuit. You'd plug a "string" of lights into one and the entire "string" will flash. Of course you need one for each "string" or else the "whole tree" blinks on and off! 😀
@mibars

2:38 is wrong! When a bulb goes out flashing rate increases! Bimetallic strip heats up less with lower current and it takes shorter time to cool down and reconnect.

I was also puzzled by that statement, since I've never seen such thing as a blinker slowing down when a bulb burns out. Rather it goes completely haywire by blinking 2-5 times the normal speed. But then again when you're desperate enough to do a video about explaining turn signals, you're most likely doing it for the ad revenue instead of being 100% accurate. I thought that would be just common sense to know what causes the click.
@MrHillbillyScientist
@MrHillbillyScientist 7 жыл бұрын
mibars is right... Less electrical energy going to the bulbs, because of one being blown, means more is converted to thermal energy in the flasher. This means it will flash faster, because it heats up faster.

A slower clicking is for the older bimetallic strip switch. Newer cars use circuits and a relay which does not vary based on load. To help identify a burnt out bulb, car manufacturers have introduced a second circuit that check for low/no current indicating a burnt out bub. If no/low current is detected the circuit will increase the rate at which the relay is turned on or off.

Iirc here in Europe it's required by law to have audible turn signals. Any vehicle that uses a solid-state blinker uses some other audible indicator, usually either a speaker or a buzzer. (for example busses here have a buzzer in the driver cabin that beeps in sync with the lights when the driver uses the turn signals, there is no audible clicking.
