What Cities Should the PWHL Expand To?

The PWHL is less than a month old and we already have cities looking for an expansion franchise. President of Business Operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Kevin Acklin, spoke with The Athletic about Pittsburgh's desire for a team. That raises the question, if the PWHL were to expand, which cities need a team?

It would be really cool to see a Quebec team, if it really works out, maybe the NHL will have another look?

At this point if Quebec gets a pwhl team that would be a blessing. Such a perfect and legendary market but just no shot at a nhl team any time soon

Like the obvious choices are: - Vancouver - Winnipeg - Calgary/Edmonton If you wanted to expand into the states, I would go to the largest/most die hard markets: - Detroit - Los Angeles - not the best option but too big to ignore and if you put a team in Vancouver - you would need more Western teams - Philadelphia - Chicago Original Six: - Toronto - Ottawa - Montreal - Boston - New York - Minneapolis Expansion: - Vancouver - Calgary - Winnipeg - Los Angeles - Chicago - Philadelphia

I think there's a reason there aren't West Coast teams already...largely due to travel costs. The fact Minnesota made the cut actually surprised me. So, if they are going to keep it in the typical "Northeast" area, I would expand to: Canada: Quebec City Halifax USA: Philadelphia Chicago

I think Pittsburgh is going to get a team. Honestly Halifax would be nice, but it might be too small. Smallest PWHL market is Ottawa with 1.4 million people. Halifax would have less than 500,000 thousand.

Idea for a 20 team league in far future : East : Buffalo, Boston, Montreal, Ottawa, New York, DC, Toronto, Detroit or QC, Pittsburgh, Chicago West : Minnesota, St. Louis or KC, Denver, Seattle, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Vegas, LA or SF

I think it would be smarter to expand to cities that don't arleady have nhl franchises. Quebec City, Halifax, Hamilton, etc. But you'll have to have enough quality players to put out a quality product, and i don't know how many pro level players they have to choose from.

I love the idea of an expansion. I've read that it's probably not going to happen until after next season, though. There is still a lot of work to finish for the league, like arena for the teams in smaller venues (like Toronto), and team names and logos. But eventually an expansion is going to be good for the league. There are players now in college that would love a chance to play professionally, and players overseas that may see how the league is doing and want to play here. But there aren't going to be a lot of openings unless they add more teams. The oldest player in the PWHL is 36 years old, compared to the oldest player in the NHL, who's 40. So I don't see many players retiring in the PWHL any time soon. Minnesota is, geographically, the farthest away from all the other teams, so I would like to see at least one (if not two) teams closer to them, like Chicago or Winnipeg. Either city would make a great regional rival for Minnesota. I remember growing up and watch the North Stars games, and the games against the Blackhawks were always the ones we really wanted to see.

Chicago, Pittsburgh, Quebec City and Hamilton/Kitchener/Waterloo. As they would probably split things into two divisions, this would make a Canadian and American division, keep things tight for travel. Quebec would likely support the heck out of a team to spite the NHL and besides, battle of Quebec. Southern Ontario would enjoy a "we're not Toronto" team, and I feel like Hamilton would be a better fit than Buffalo. Pittsburgh because of what you said, and Chicago for a big market (added bonus, they get to cheer a hockey team not run by Wirtz).

seattle. end of story. the pacific northwest has been the growingest market for hockey based on usahockey memberships, the majority of the spike being women. my state in particular, idaho (not pacific northwest, nor midwest but on the crossroads of the kraken / VGK/avalanche market) has been a huge success story for women and kids playing hockey in the years leading up to the echl steelheads kelly cup final run last year.

I would say the best choice would probably be a Wisconsin Team. They are top 3 in women's NCAA hockey, and it could create a rivalry team for Minnesota that is kind of on it's own out there with Toronto as the closest geographical city. It's also close enough that you could easily expand to Chicago, and create kind of a 'pseudo' western conference until the league is ready to actually expand out to the Vancouver's and the Seattle's. Then maybe look at a Detroit and Ohio team... or a Pitt/Philly and Baltimore/DC if they want to expand south.

It feels like Quebec City could be primed to have a team before the Nordiques returns to the NHL. The arena is there, the City is ready and if the PWHL works there then it would only be more arguments towards bringing the Show back to the Capital. Otherwise, I would love to see teams in Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles, Vancouver but I feel like they are focusing on the eastern side of North America in a way and that's okay because of traveling so I would also see a team in Florida, Buffalo would be nice, but perhaps not as one of the first 10 teams and I do see Washington being there because of the reasons Jesse mentioned and also because a ''Battle of the Capitals'' would be fun between WSH and OTT. If it were up to me, I'd have the expansion happen in a way that Canada and the US would have an equal amount of teams and the countries would be the ''Conferences'' at least for now until we have a big enough normal to have Divisions.
@JasonFahy
@JasonFahy 4 ай бұрын
I wish QC all the luck in the world, but do they have a good answer when people say "you had the Nordiques and couldn't sustain them"? (I genuinely don't know - is the city a lot bigger/richer now, or anything?)
@jean-sebastienprimeau7454
@jean-sebastienprimeau7454 4 ай бұрын
@@JasonFahy The city has grown in population and is richer but it's not equal or better than Montréal for sure. They are able to have amazing attendance with the Ramparts that is why I think a PWHL team would be a perfect fit. It would cost far less to operate than the Nordiques too.

How could you ignore any expansion to Canada? Canadians already make up 57% of the PWHL players. The first expansion round should go to: Detroit and Chicago in the U.S. Quebec City and Winnipeg in Canada. Later on down the road they can add more. Likely move west.

6 is good for the first five years. afterwards you see where the league is. they havent even play 10 games yet and you're talking about expansion. thats not how you run a successful a business. you make sure the product is great and youve worked out the kinks and see if their is still demand after the novelty aspect is gone before you expand. the NHL spent 25 years with six teams before expanding!

I think adding two more teams make sense either this next season or the one after. For financial reasons I would keep it in the east so they can keep money saved for now. I want a western Canadian team but I get it does not make sense YET. My personal feeling add one in Canada and one in the USA. (Pittsburgh would be a good choice)

Lol Pittsburg wanting a pro team, Quebec sitting their going... Oh you have an arena and want a pro hockey team... Honestly tho, PWHL should do what the NHL refused to do and put a team in Quebec. I do agree with Chicago, possibly Pittsburg... But Washington and Buffalo maybe later but maybe saint johns. if your expanding 2 Canadian teams 2 American teams.. Also you don't want to expand to fast and "water down" the product of a great thing. Also what makes it awsome is its affordable to see a game its great to see teams of little leauge girls and possible future players of the leauge showing up seeing they're stars and heros.

I would do expansion in 3 stages over the next decade to two decades for the PWHL. I like your picks but I think Washington DC makes the division’s a little wonky so I would pick Detroit. So then expansion one you can do West; Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto and Buffalo + East; Ottawa, Montreal, Boston, NY and Pittsburgh. Expansion two you do six teams out west to help with travel costs; Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, LA, SJ/SF and Denver. Expansion three you can really go anywhere to round up to 20 teams total. The cities I would pick are; Washington DC, Columbus, Dallas and Seattle.

I think Quebec and Halifax (maybe Hamilton) Saskatoon are also good options. For smaller leagues (as MLS has proved and where the WNBA historically had issues) the right market (one where there is infrastructure with women's/girl hockey) is more important than size. In Australia, teams in the men's football league (AFL) expanded to have women's teams (AFLW) that wear the same jerseys and use the same logos and team names. The NHL could commit to supporting the PWHL in a similar manner. Would they? Should they? Is it even possible?

I think the league will sell the current franchises to new owners before looking at expansion. Long term I think it'll end up being a bad look for the league to own the teams and it'll inevitably lead to conspiracy theories about the league favouring certain teams and whatnot. That being said in the short term it is fantastic for the league to let the teams generate potential franchise value by selling tickets and tv/streaming deals before actually selling the teams. But I don't think there will be any expansion until all the current teams have new owners and then after that expansion will work like other leagues where the expansion team pays a fee to the league for the right to create a new team.

The focus on the USA is misguided. Canada should be the focus of this league. Québec, obviously, Winnipeg, then maybe Milwaukee and Chicago. I don't really know where they will draw in the states. Such an opportunity to bring back some sanity to the game and its standings and not follow the stupidity of the NHL. Please get rid of 3 on 3, shoot outs and loser pts. So many columns in these standings. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️. How about a return to 2 (or 3) pts for a win, 1 for a tie , and absolutely zero for any type of loss. Make overtime 5 on 5 or 4 on 4 as a compromise, for a 10 min OT. if it’s a tie then so be it. Absolutely nothing wrong with ties. But rewarding losing is the downfall of the NHL and has created this false parity which is an absolute joke.
