A frequent debate in the Sonic community is usually over Sonic's design, one of the most popular has been the green eyes, and more recently Sonic's arm color. In 2014, Sonic Boom introduced the idea of Sonic having blue arms to match the color of his body. This has stretched to other forms of media such as the extremely popular Sonic Movie franchise. But what is better and should Sonic just have one arm color? In this video, we talk about this today!

I like the contrast. Blue arms work for Boom Sonic because he's wearing other stuff and so his design doesn't come across as generic. Movie Sonic's "realistic" textures also make the arms work.

Honestly, I don’t mind what color Sonic’s arms are. I think in certain designs, blue or tan arms could work.

Personally Im arm neutral. I like both arm colors for Sonic. I also believe that his arm color is all personal preference, but i do believe to give the animation and art team full freedom to change up his arms or any other part of his design to be more visually pleasing for the fanbase/ target demographic/ audience.

I honestly think it depends on art style. When you showed adventure sonic with blue arms and movie sonic with tan arms, they look weird. I think it might also be a texture thing, like his tan arms fit more as a piece of his body that isn't completely fur and blue fits more as his fur. If you try to give adventure sonic blue arms, you have to show that it's fur to an extent and not have it so smooth while if you give movie sonic tan arms, it would benefit to make his arms a lot more smooth, maybe even hairless (although in a live action film where you're making him a little more realistic, that doesn't work, like how sonic adventure is stylized to be a cartoon pretty much.) In summary, I like both colors for sonics arms under the right conditions. I think the sonic prime version of sonic looks awesome and would look weird with blue arms while I think movie sonic looks awesome and weird with tan, smooth arms.

I think that the reason Some sonics look good with blue arms and some don’t is because some don’t have as detailed fur as others. In the games, sonics fur looked more solid and you didn’t really see much texture. When the movie came out you could see all of his tiny spikes. And in sonic boom he has more spikes growing out. You can tell they are giving him more and more detail.

Sonic's peach arms makes his design look simple but somewhat complex,so i primarily prefer the peach arms but the blue arms just make him look a lil more basic and simple in my opinion (which can be good but this is just my opinion).

Having a character being designed purely one colour is almost always a way to make them look less memorable. And this is something that’s (in general) not subjective as colour theory supports it. The tan arms work better in my opinion because they add complexity and have a good contrast against blue, since the arms look somewhat like a shade of yellow and blue and yellow contrast pretty well. All blue apart from the shoes, face and stomach looks a bit strange to me. Additionally, I heard somewhere that Sonic was designed to be similar to the white belly hedgehog which doesn’t have arms of its fur colour, while Shadow and Silver were meant to be more like normal hedgehogs in design, same for Amy. This is why Knuckles and Tails didn’t need differently coloured arms like Sonic and Amy, Contrast wasn’t the main reason. So I feel like it’s a disservice to give Sonic blue arms as it goes against the designers view of the character, as it changed something he did, whereas the Modern design doesn’t actually take anything away from Sonics design but only adds things (like height and coloured eyes). I felt the movie design would have still worked good with the tan arms and better imho, but I don’t mind Boom Sonic being blue armed as he’s not based off the original games in any way and is an alternate universe, the movie being a loose adaption of the game so it should be more faithful to designs. That being said, I think Amy should have mandatory pink arms like her fur colour because it simply doesn’t make sense not to at this point after what they’ve done to Sonic

Tan arms make him give him that cool factor. The blue arms make him look should I say, fluffier? Or warmer? I think both work fine for their respected animations so long as they blend nicely with Sonics body and the background.

Think of his arms as if it was normally like that then he grew and his blue hair grew out and now that’s his hair. Believe what you want but maybe sonic boom is trying to say sonic grew up. It sure does seem like it because of how mature he acts nowadays

in my opinion both colors are good and match a different type of design, it's like an outfit or an accessory it will only serve well if it fits the character's style, Sonic from the games has classic elements that everyone is already used to like the tan colored arms because his design was planned to fit with that element, Sonic from the movie was made with another design style and aiming to be realistic but still keeping the characteristics of the franchise, so Sonic's anatomy is the same as in games such as his short stature and the big eyes but like the real life hedgehogs has the most apparent quills and the fur is usually of uniform color they applied these elements in the quills and on Sonic's arms with one being more apparent through the fur and the arms being blue in color as well as much of the body, as it was said in the video these ideas fit with their respective designs because they were projects for that, so in my opinion both colors are good and if they will fit or not will depend on the design style that will be best for it, in my opinion the more traditional and cartoon look like games, comics and animated series suits best with the tan arms and the live action style seems to match more with the blue arms, I don't know about you but it seems balanced and fair

should also mention that whenever sonic has tan arms his arms are just like tubes sticking out of his body while when they're blue he has shoulders, which is also why it look weird if he had tan arms with shoulders because it doesn't blend well

While I think blue arms are superior, the rule of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" also kinda applies here. Sonic has looked this way for DECADES, his design alone is part of the franchise's appeal. While different interpretations can get away with changing his design, I don't think you could heavily redesign Modern Sonic without rubbing a lot of people the wrong way.

Movie Sonic's blue arms make his design look more consistent and, dare I say it, adorably fuzzy. On the flipside, 'tan-arms Sonic' has been such a staple of the Sonic games that keeping him that way just makes sense.

The funny thing about Blue arms is, before the movies and Sonic Boom, blue arms in the sonic series have always popped up as coloring mistakes I say they have a place now, thanks to Boom and the movies, but mainline Sonic should just stick to the modern design we have now, the tan arms break up the colors nicely, otherwise it's honestly too much blue and draws your eyes on his belly, and that's weird. one thing I can say for certain, at least they don't mess with the leg color, looks awful when that mistake is made.

Great video! I totally agree that the arm color really depends on what media best suits it. Making a sudden change to tan in the movie, or blue in the main series would just be unnessecary. I prefer tan arms myself, but that all depends on the person. Whether you like one or the other, there's a version of Sonic with that arm color you like that you can enjoy. There's no real reason to fight over it when everyone gets what they want in one way or another

I loved his tan arms. It was more appealing. The first time I saw Sonic in Sonic Boom, I was annoyed with his arms for a while. Thankfully, I got used to it. But I prefer the tan arms any day.

Great video Ricardo, I personally prefer the tan Arms cause i feel it makes sonic and also on Amy pop out more I also grew up with boom so the blue arms weren’t massively jarring they were wierd but not enough to bother me, i think the sonic movie designs looks great the blue arms make his character design look better, if the current modern sonic model had blue that would look actually bad since blue isn’t the same as red, and yellow for tails and knuckles you wouldn’t be able to tell where his arms are

Tbh, now that movie sonic entered the mix of designs, I kinda like his arms being blue but I dont care what his arm color is (as long as it's now one of the 2 options unlike some random color like purple). But I kinda also like maybe a bit of blue fur would be at the shoulders and the rest could be peach, best of both worlds. But it's just my opinion

Tan arms is tradition. I can never see blue arms as anything other than a miscolor. Like a mistake you'd see in early archie comics which was pretty frequent. The weirdest thing is having Sonic with blue arms, but Amy still having tan arms in Sonic Boom. It's like they aren't even serious about the change.

Tan arms work best in 2D/2D illustrations. While you CAN make them work well enough in 3D, the reason Boom (and probably also Movie) Sonic was given blue arms is very similar to the reason why he was originally given tan arms: it makes animating them easier. Unless you just completely detach his arms from his body (like early 3D Sonic models did), the textures are going to distort weirdly at the shoulders. It can make them look a bit off-model in some poses without REALLY working to preserve that hotdog shape the arms are supposed to have. 2D doesn't have this problem because you can just... draw his arms however you want, without needing to wrestle with 3D geometry. (And Boom Amy might've kept the tan arms solely because she's wearing a sleeveless dress, which her shoulders are directly attached to, so keeping them looking on-model was less of a problem. It's still a factor in her usual design -- where she's wearing a halter dress -- though.)

I think the blue arms in Modern Donic just look weird because meanwhile on Boom and Movie Sonic Designs his arms are like coming out/connects with the body, Modern Sonic has it like it starts here, and doesn't have something to make it look like is coming/connects with the body, so yeah the thing of the characters designs having in mind what color the arms are gonna be is a great point

I think the tan arms are better because it makes him stand out compared to the male hedgehog cast and... let's say, hypothetically, you have a yellow car and you want to add a spoiler in the back for that down force, but, do you keep the spoiler yellow or make it black to stand out? In my opinion, having more use of an accent colour makes the most sense to me, so the black spoiler and accents and, in this case, tan arms ftw

It depends for me. In the games, Sonic doesn’t really have shoulders. That makes the tan arms look better. They break up his design better. In the movies, Sonic does have shoulders. The blue arms blend better

I personally like the blue arms no matter which Sonic. Heck when I bought a Sonic plushie at a school fair a few years ago I went with the boom plushie because he has the blue arms

Peach arms are iconic of Sonic's character and one of the most recognizable parts of his appearance, and it makes him less simplistic and more out-of-common, and it ajouts a plus to the "bad boy" he was thought for. Removing them is like removing the blue color of his fur or his monoeye. People wanting Sonic to keep blue arms don't know his character at all.

His arms should be black with a red stripe on them, while he's at it he could also get a more super haircut, also with red stripes and black fur, maybe grow some white chest hair, make all the blue fur black, get rid of the skin belly, get some new kicks, maybe some glove soles, and inhibitor rings to save some power for later

Tan arms tan arms Blue arms are cool, they don't look bad at all, but I like tan arms most since they fit the mainline Sonic design the best. Obviously tan arms look weird on, say, the movie design, but that's because his arms there are designed with a little more realism -- in some shots, you can even see his e l b o w s that's w e i r d d d But with the mainline Sonic design, they just make his arms look more noodle-y, which works great for his cartoony proportions and inspirations. And, just as a personal little thing, I don't know if anyone thinks like this but they kinda give me Mighty the Armadillo vibes. I dunno, tan arms makes Sonic look like he's got this slim, lean, sorta softer front / inner body, with the spikier and more protective back. I like it, they make him feel more hedgehog-y but still cartoony enough to work as he is. At the end of the day, whatever, Sonic's arms can be whatever colour, doesn't really matter to me -- but between the two, I do kiiiiiiinda like the tan arms

And also I didn’t even realize Sonic’s arms changed colors until people started pointing it out all over the internet and I just went “Oh…..So what who cares?” Edit: Also why is everyone talking about his arms the better question would be his eyes. I mean seriously which looks better two separate pupils or just one big one?

I really just enjoy both arm colors. Media for Sonic should utilize both choices because it works either way; Game Sonic with tan arms and Movie/Show/Comics with colored OR tan arms. I think it's way too late to change Game Sonic's design that drastically anyways.

Ehh I gotta say I prefer the flesh colored/tan arms. When you compare Sonic's model to other characters he simply has the blanket designed. The reason Shadow, Silver and even Boom Sonic can get away having same arm color as their fur is because they have way more added to their overall design. It shows when you bring up the SA Sonic with blue arms, he looks blander than normal. Even when you brought up Mocie Sonic with tan arms, it looks way better and his model pop out a bit more imo. Pretty much why Boom Sonic having blue arms didn't really bother much people. He had the sports tape, scarf, etc. Just more to his design I guess

I like both, but it all comes down to the design of the rest of Sonic's design (Like you stated). Hedgehogs in real life, their arms and legs are the same color as their fur and quills (Or at least my hedgehog's is).

While I love tan armed sonic. After the years I've grown used to blue arm. I was one of them people who was so mad at the boom design over his arms. Though mostly that anger was pointed at the shorter splines and lankier legs. But with seeing it in the movie and games gone forward. Its not to bad anymore

funny thing is that in canon, sonics tan arms are probably cus he shaves them. just like how his eyelids were tan before but now have blue. the ones with tan arms like amy and to a lesser extent rouge, are people that would really take care of their appearance. that just means that sonic cares about his appearance

I personally think the better arm color depends on if sonic is 2D or 3D, in 2D tan works a bit better and helps with clarity in sonic’s posing, but in 3D they tend the leave a weird seam at the shoulder which usually doesn’t happen with blue arms

Well, I was introduced to Sonic with the tan arms, the blue arms (especially on Movie Sonic) are just better imo. I kinda started noticing that tan arms is part of his skin, making him look like a hairless hedgehog except for his torso and legs, which are fur/hair, which is very weird to me. So I definitely prefer blue arms, and I DEFINITELY would like a 2D classic game with them, because if Sonic Movie 2's credits prove it possible then it should happen.

Funny thing is and I will preface this with I was idiot back then but honestly I always drew sonic with blue arms even when I was a kid and was confused when the blue arm thing was in boom and was shocked he did have flesh arms in everything before Boom. I think my mind was playing with me especially since like you said everyone but Amy and Sonic had arms that matched their fur color so I guess I assumed so.

I’m used to Tan but blue arms won’t really faze me after a slight adjustment. I mean they both still fit sonic

Gamerguyd7aces had a video a long while back that the reason Sonic and Amy had bare arms compared to Shadow and Silver were that they were a rare species of hedgehog called Madras hedgehogs from India, while Silver and Shadow were common hedgehogs.

the design needs to support what color they are using. In the case of boom and movie sonic tan arms look weird. But in the case of game sonic blue arms look like he’s wearing long sleeves. It looks good as long as the design supports it

I think it depends on context 3d sonic should have blue arms to avoid sockets and have shoulders and pixel sonic should have tan so he has arms 2d drawn is whatever works

I think I like the peach arms because it fits a bit better with the character. Think about runner’s, they wear tank tops, and if they wear long sleeves it looks odd.

I think the color of his arms depends on the version. I don’t think blue arms would work on modern Sonic but in Sonic Prime they gave him shoulders and him having his normal colored arms makes him look like he’s wherein a shirt, but versions like the Boom version or the Movie version I like the blue arms because it’s just something different! Especially the movie version. It kinda bothers me that they didn’t give Amy pink arms in Sonic Boom.

In my opinion, both could work well as long as it’s consistent. I don’t care if people get Sonic’s arm color wrong but if they’re making like an animation or a comic where his arm colour just changes at random, then i get kinda annoyed.

I can understand that sonics design is probably what's been keeping him going all this time and how it means so much to people, but I was always someone who knew very little about sonic outside of .exe and some memes and didn't get into it until the first movie came out and now I consider myself a sonic fan, all that being said I actually couldn't care less what color his arms are, like a tiny tiny part of me prefers them being blue to match the rest of his body and cuz the movie did it, but still to me its just such a minor detail that doesn't really matter at all.

Makes me wonder how Disney fans reacted when Mickey was first given a skin-colored face and actual eyes. (instead of a pure white face with black eyes) Plus like with Sonic, multiple designs of both characters co-exist today.

If people make the argument "the other characters have colored arms, so Sonic looks out of place", then you'd also need to make his chest blue to match with the others. Why does the argument only apply to his arms? Why not everything else? Because that would look too weird? Well you're right. Keep them tan lmao

Sonic has had blue arms way before Boom, in some shots of AOSTH the arms are blue, and on artwork for AOSTH they're blue.

It doesn’t really matter you see it looks good one of the design cause when they mess with the original it looks weird like when they tried to make movie sonic have tan arms look weird because it s different sonic so modern sonic look good in tan and so does classic sonic and boom and movie look good in blue arms

Speaking about arm color, watch people especially on twitter lose their minds over Amy having pink arms when she makes her debut in the movies.😂 I'm surprised there hasn't been a debate on whether seperate eyes or mono-eye is better for Sonic yet.

Tan gives him variation and contrast, but blue is both more natural and easier to work with in 3D. It really depends on what the designer is going for. But if you make Sonic’s legs tan, what are you even doing?

I don't care what arm color we get, but the blue arms work, although only in the movies they work good, and the reason (At least IMO) is because Sonic has a lot more details, like you can see all of his quills, he actually has fur, and he has 2 extra quills, one on his head, and one on his back, so the blue arms work for the movie design

To be perfectly honest I’m kinda like blue arms but at the same time I’m more used to the tan arms but the way I see it it really doesn’t matter, it’s just how they interpret the character. like for example classic sonic Tan arms because due to the limitations of technology back in the 90s, and with modern sonic tan arms again is that something that we’ve grown used to. and blue arms in sonic boom just something different for a change, later on when back to tan arms, until the movie came out blue arms again

Well, for video game Sonic, the tan arms work. For the Movie Sonic, the blue arms work. Also, the green eyes work for BOTH movie AND video game Sonic.
