Now that I'm finally on the trail, I need a way to talk to my friends while off-roading. GMRS? CB? .. Ham?
I let you know what I got, why I got it and show you how I installed it!

This is helpful. One thing, when running wire/cable through an insertion point, it helps to utilize a "drip loop." Your wire drops below the point of insertion, comes up (forming a loop) and then goes through the grommet or whatever point of insertion you have. That way, water will drip down past the hole minimizing water intrusion.

Good choice, I bought the same CB radio for my CB setup, I also have a GMRS radio setup which is more popular with my off-road groups. I grew tired of the spring on the antenna mount, it allows your antenna to flex too much, and it constantly hits your rig. I only use the quick disconnect now for my CB’s antenna.

Hopefully you figured this out already but…. if you can’t talk to anyone and are not hearing any signals, go back to your antenna mount. There should be a plastic bushing that keeps the threaded center conductor insulated from the steel. That’s why the bolt appeared to small for the hole. You didn’t install the insulator. Looks like you drilled a washer out to tighten everything down but that’s incorrect. Your antenna does not need to have contact with the steel part of your body. If you know someone with an SWR meter, you will also need to set your SWR for best match.

Thanks friend. That washer was just a washer. The original one was too small for the hole on my bracket. The coupler for the antenna and cable are intact and everything works great (as tested in the field 👍). But I did come across an issue if you know the answer: while tightening the antenna down, I’m not sure if I ‘tightened’ the spring tension. Not even sure if there’s such an adjustment. But now the spring won’t flex at all. It’s like it’s solid with no give. Do you know if I (or even if it’s possible to) inadvertently increases the torsion of the spring?

@@neverendingweekend There is probably no adjustment for the spring. Springs come in different stiffness for large or small antennas. I rewatched the video at home on my larger screen MacBook Pro…it looks like the plastic spacer was on the bottom piece with the cable. You should have removed it and put it on top of the metal bracket before the washer, spring and antenna. But if it works…then great. You should be able to talk 10 or so miles between vehicles with stock radios and properly tuned antennas.

@@MISTA350 ahhh. Ok. I’ll try that. And test it to see if it changes range or anything. The spring is a weird one. It was flexing fine. It was a ‘heavy’ spring suited to a 4’ antenna. But after wrenching it on, the spring became super rigid. No flex or give at all. I’m calling right channel radios tomorrow to see if they have a clue to what happened. Thanks for the tip!

@@neverendingweekend let me know how it turns out! You can probably talk to vehicles that you can see even with the antenna grounded out but you’ll have a lot more range with everything in place and the antenna ungrounded. there’s even the possibility that you can talk half way across the country ((skip talk) when conditions are right and your set up is tuned correctly). Also, you did a great job on the video. Excellent work!

I have the same set up. The plastic ‘washer’ does go on top. But like yours, my cable end has nothing to hold on to, to tighten it with. So I can tighten it to only a certain point, but it just gets loose after a single drive. Not sure what to do … 🤔 Also, I some how torqued the spring when installing it that it has zero give now. I didn’t realize you could compressed the spring,.. but now I can’t unwind it. 🤦‍♂️
