Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man's Sky both had similar trajectory on the pre-release hype train, and a disastrous launch. But since then, No Man's Sky has provided countless free updates, transforming the game into what was initially promised. This video aims to highlight the parallels in both developers journey, and how CD Projekt Red can use Hello Games as a template for how to move forward.

SKIP THE INTRO: 1:13 Thanks for watching! I was a definite No Man's Sky convert in recent years seeing how far the game's come, and I wanted to make this video as a sort of call to hope that we could see the same path for Cyberpunk 2077, only time will tell but it's nice to dream. Hope you guys enjoyed the video!

For NMS to admit their faults, apologize, and promise to fix it earned a lot of good will with gamers. Just listen to the way the creator talks about his team so respectfully. Reading the reports of CDPR's piss poor management makes me skeptical they will achieve the same redemption with fans. Especially after CDPR made promises like "no crunch" then pivoted to full-out 1 year+ crunch. Gamers remember.
@daniel_netzel
@daniel_netzel 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Sean was just naive, and thrust into a situation he couldn't properly handle. But he cared about his team, and the community and the game itself for that matter. Reading stories about the 1 year + crunch is sickening. First you overwork these people during a pandemic, and then when they tell you multiple times that the game isn't ready you just say fuck it and release it anyways? It shows very little regard for the people behind the scenes.

In CP2077 "Crunch" is also the name of a weapon mod that stacks damage. Coincidence? 🤔

ust listen to the way the creator talks about his team so respectfully. Yes how he says "the team being dishonest or lazy" and goes into detail about not being lazy, but doesn't elaborate on criticism of deception. That spoke volumes to me.

If youre not careful, it can be a big time suck, but its suuuuuper relaxing to play. Its not the sort of engaging long term thing as Skyrim or RDR2, but it's a totally unique experience that can scratch an inch others don't even try to. Ive enjoyed it quite a lot recently, just walking around, checking out cool planets, building up my base, roaming around with my brother in game.

I still enjoyed the story and characters greatly, but yeah, the game needs a serious workover. Not sure about the certainty of that though, considering Hello Games is a privately owned company while CDPR have multiple shareholders and investors. Eventually they’ll have to move on to the next project.
@daniel_netzel

Thats a concern of mine as well, however, they're in a tough spot. A lot of their core audience feels totally betrayed, a lot of the dev team feels betrayed. That part about legacy in Sean's speech really rings true for me. And if CD Projekt isn't careful, they might lose both their audience and their best employees.

I really want to believe that they're going to follow this approach, but unfortunately I've already seen some red flags suggesting the opposite, like downright denying rumors that they're going to give it the No Man's Sky treatment, the co-found making an apology video where half of it feels like excuses and he even goes as far as saying that he's "proud" of the PC version, and the upcoming Cyberpunk Online, which they want to turn it into GTA: Online style cash cow, giving them little incentive to actually deliver on their promise when it comes to Cyberpunk 2077. They'll still fix the bugs, they'll still introduce new story DLCs, but I have a strong suspicion that they won't give it the deep design overhaul and expansion that it needed.
@daniel_netzel
@daniel_netzel 3 жыл бұрын
I think that you're probably right. But I think they should be wary, GTA has been so successful because Rockstar doesn't fuck around, they ALWAYS release really polished and fun games. If CDPR just moves on, I think a lot of their loyal audience won't be buying anything from them again.

First of all I loved and I'm subbing. Also I completely agree that CDPR has the potential to fix this but do far they haven't proven that their willing. So far all the CDPR executives done is claimed that they're sorry. Badowski himself said they've "owned" up to the console glitches and are working hard to fix it on Twitter. He also claimed that the missing features were part of the creation process and that "features come and go as we see if they work ot not" and so far their missing the most crucial aspect that no many sky devs took, staying quiet and focusing on the game instead of trying to combat criticism. I just don't think they'll work on overhauling the game like no many sky has even a little since all they've done is acted that the glitches are the only problem and have made no effort to acknowledge said missing features and content (As far as I know) . Personally I don't think Cyberpunk2077 will make a no man sky comeback and to be honest I hope I'm proven wrong.

Hello Games redeemed themselves with years of free updates and yet a total filesize of 13.48GB, which is incredible. CP2077 sits at 117GB with several +15GB patches so far. I steer away from titles that require giant patches just to play them, because it's just not feasible (data wise) for me to download them, even though I have 5TB of storage. That probably seems trivial, but is everyone going to keep a broken 117GB on their system, waiting for it to get better over the next 2 years?

I agree with this, but it's not really their "fault" (in quotes because obviously it is, but it goes beyond them). Games take MONEY to make. I capitalize because it is a LOT. More than movies, more than multiple movies. They have LOTS of moving parts and LOTS of different technologies needed to make it run. The term "engine" is extremely apropos. It's complicated, needs to move fast, and be reliable to be a workhorse. And, in the world of Capitalism, and in huge megacorps and publishing houses doleing out budget, you are CONSTANTLY harangued to justify the expenditure. And, with games getting better and better, and the constant need to re-invent the tools needed to make it operate because previous tech can only scale so far into next-gen hardware, it takes more and more time and resources to make something. CP2077 took 8 years, and probably needed another 2 in the oven, but HAD to release. Investors had stakes. Marketers built hype-machines that could not be turned off. Commitments were made and people staked livelihoods on them being honored. You need gorgeous sizzle reals to woo execs to keep feeding you funds. You need pre-orders to show enthusiasm and that people are "voting with their dollars" in your favor to secure investment and show there will be a payoff. The corps running the show are beholden to Capitalist principals like return on investment and IP security, and can't thrive on creativity alone. It's not a great world to exist in, either. Crunch is real. Union-busting and the "Hustle" mentality plague the industry. It is, just as much as teaching or nursing, a field of passion that often doesn't justify the compensation. I work in heavy industry and we siphon people away from gaming regularly because we pay better, the tech is more interesting, and we're more responsive. The talent left over for the meat grinder in the gaming world is not always the highest-quality, it's usually people who are just exceptionally passionate about playing games. And, it IS a meat grinder. Churn is huge, and leads to instability, especially at the big studios. This has been exceedingly long, the tl;dr is just that I agree that the industry is ill. Its lungs are black. But my argument is that its because of coal dust. It is a victim of its products. A victim of society. A victim of Capitalism and its vultures. And most of all, a victim of its own hubris.

While I'm choosing to remain optimistic, to me Cyberpunk's biggest problem isn't its bugs, it's the game's lack of creativity and poor usage of the Cyberpunk genre. I don't think any amount of patching or big fixing can address that. My thoughts exactly. The Witcher 3 is one of my favorite games, it's seriously like Mass Effect Andromeda all over again.

TBH, I wouldn't mind the bugs. As you put in the video, most fresh releases have them nowadays. And almost all the time, those bugs will be patched and fixed in the future. What I have a huge problem with is the fact that they promised a game that would run on the last-gen (during development current-gen) consoles well-which they absolutely didn't deliver. Let's call it what it is: a lie. And for that, the CDPR management deserves all the flack and shit storm they are getting right now, and I'm not even sorry. (Note: I specifically wrote “management”, not “developers” who may not have had a say in this debacle.)

@@user-NameName i wouldn't wish unemployment on hundreds of people, but I do hope that companies face consequences for shit like this. Truly unacceptable. When I worked at Starbucks I could lose my job for giving someone the wrong milk in their latte, but these companies can straight up lie to get hundreds of millions of dollars from working class people and nothing happens? Its frustrating.

We say: "I rolled my lip." The fate of ME: Andromeda awaits the game. The company has no money, knowledge, strength, and most importantly there is no DESIRE to complete the game. On PC, the game came out excellent according to the leadership! (google interpreter)

I don't think it's fair to compare an indie studio that had only 6 developers at the start of the project and 20 at the day of release, a studio who's most successful game was not even close not even capable of competing with The Witcher III, Hello Games who truly believed they could achieve what they promised because they never faced a project as big as No Man's Sky, who also suffered a flooding that erased almost their entire game, to CPR, a AAA studio that had 500 people working on Cyberpunk 2077 divided into 4 teams, that lied knowingly, and with the direction of the company being full of greedy assholes that knew the game was not ready because their own developers where telling them but decided to release the game on holiday season because it's the most profitable time of every year, no, I don't believe it's fair, and I really dislike when people do this comparison, not even close

They will probably try to fix the most superficial things but the core of the game is broken. I say: let them crash and burn, the line must be drawn and there must be consequences, sever consequences, to this kind of sham/scam. For it was/is a scam, they deliberately hid information and lied to everyone involved. It wasn't "a mistake". Also, I would like to believe "gamers" can learn NOT to trust any company, not to be mindless fans/followers. Sadly, if this whole pandemic has shown anything, is that we humans are not as intelligent as we like to believe, so... :(

I don't dis agree with anything you're saying in this video. With that said the idea that a company can just "No Mans Sky it" after release is a dangerous idea to make popular. Not that you're doing that but I can just see in my minds eye a board room meeting where project leads say "We cant actually finish this game or fulfill our promises but they'll buy it anyway if they think we'll finish for free later. "

If you think CD Projekt, a large, publicly-traded company, will spend four years putting out free updates like Hello Games did, you're living in a fantasy world, a really buggy fantasy world. I would really like to be wrong as I want CP77 to be better.

This game is too far gone to EVER pull a no man's sky. NMS at least was playable on its launch, it only lacked all the content promised. Cyberpunk lacks promised content, has a widely disliked story, a world that can't be fixed and the plethora of bugs we all know of. It will require far too much to ever bring this game to a playable state again and it suffers from things that simply can't be fixed. If they get sued into oblivion and go bankrupt though, it may be harsh of me to say this, but I won't be missing them.

I dont see how you can compare these two games. NMS was pretty universally panned at launch and hardly the game it was advertized. It needed a lot of work to be good, before becomming great. At least the pc version CP 2077 is critcally acclaimed (like 90% on metacritic). Its already a great game as is. All the PC version really needs is some bugfixes, but not really more than your average game of that size.

I'm assuming you haven't watched the full video yet, but I discuss within why I think Cyberpunk has more serious issues than bugs or glitches, and I think they also released a game that was not as it was advertised. I'm also wary of the 90% critical reviews that seem not to care about most of what the community is mentioning, like horrible NPC A.I., promised features cut, lack of dialogue options, awful cop system. There are genuine complaints to be had that stretch well beyond bugs, if you still enjoy the game then I say all the power to you, but I wouldn't so easily dismiss honest criticism of a game people wanted to love.
