What defines the obedience of a wife to her husband? What does Islam say about obedience? What are the conditions and rulings surrounding this?
Full obedience is given to no one but Allah SWT and His messenger. Any other obedience is conditioned, depending on cultural norm. No one should be burdened with more than they can bear, and this applies to asking things of your spouse that may not be reasonable.
Shaykh Waleed Basyouni answers in detail.
FaithIQ is a video library of answers to everyday, contemporary Islamic questions. You can browse the most commonly asked (research-based) questions to get straight-to-the-point answers directly from qualified scholars and teachers.

Our scholars nowadays are too vague. I think most times when women have a problem with obedience is because they have either seen a wrong example or have a wrong imagination about it. The title of Amir on the husband is not a privilege, but a responsibility because he is responsible for feeding, clothing, education, tarbiya, both physical and mental wellbeing etc. Imagine being called to account on the day of judgement about something your wife, or children did. So for those who truly understand, they will see that it is more of a burden than a privilege. But as the scholar said, there is a difference between being a boss and a leader. I hope we can differentiate the 2, and also pray that our sisters understand that they are not being relegated to slaves, but rather as followers and confidants to the man. If the man is the king then you are the queen and royal adviser

lol , I’m just tired of seeing the same comments so imma go ahead and address this , the prophet’s first wife was a business women , y’all use Islam in what benefits you and ur ego , no wonder why so many think that Islam belittle women hearing u saying if he demand or command lol her she can’t in such manner as if she is a slave , please keep the prophet outta ur mouth if ur one of these” men “ , the prophet was such kind soul and so understanding that I believe he would have never address his wife like that , even if he preferred her to say at home he will suggest it in such lovely kind manner that she would accept and ofc he is a PROPHET. May peace be upon him , and one more point most of men that I have seen in comments about women videos , use the prophet as an example only when it comes to marrying multiple wife’s , forgetting that he only got married after khadijah radiya laho anha died and it was a COMMANDMENT from allah . Thank you and relax a bit ,oh and it’s not a Sunah lol and the aya is very clear yet these “men “ only look at the first few words of the aya and neglect the most important part about equality and the severe punishment of whom does not do at it says if he wants multiple and that there are men that can take only ONE , the aya is not a commandment as sooooo many men act like in that part lol , they don’t even do that to the 5 Islamic commandments , it’s so ironic , if u want multiple wife’s just go to a women that want that and tell her form the beginning , not force it in comments on everyone lol .

I went to al-Hirah and saw them (the people) prostrating themselves before a satrap of theirs, so I said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has most right to have prostration made before him. When I came to the Prophet (ﷺ), I said: I went to al-Hirah and saw them prostrating themselves before a satrap of theirs, but you have most right, Messenger of Allah, to have (people) prostrating themselves before you. He said: Tell me , if you were to pass my grave, would you prostrate yourself before it? I said: No. He then said: Do not do so. If I were to command anyone to make prostration before another I would command women to prostrate themselves before their husbands, because of the special right over them given to husbands by Allah.

@@CathyKitson actually let me explain it to u, the arabic used in the Quran is more than a 1000 yr old language which is very different from the modern day arabic, the very old and experienced scholars simplified the Qur'an into the simple arabic and now that book is translated million times into various other languages including english, thats why a few verses are interpreted in a wrong way, the verse of surah nisa 34 says "if your wife goes on the evil path, admonish them" this word admonish is interpreted into beat or hit when in reality it means "strictly warn them". Actually in islam it is believed that women are more likely to be influenced by evil thats why their husbands(as a partner) have been given the responsibility to remind them that wat they are doing is wrong, and vice versa, even the wife can warn the husband if he does something wrong as they are garments for each other as mentioned in the Quran. But many narcissistic men and islamophobes will randomly paste this verse on the internet to show how "oppressing" is islam which is not true. Infact b4 islam, domestic violence was very common but after the reign of prophet Muhammad and emergance of islam, domestic violence drastically reduced, so why do think those muslims who accepted islam stopped beating their wives if islam ACTUALLY gave "permission" for them to beat their wives?

@@CathyKitson husbands have been called leaders bcoz a leader is a person who has the most amount of responsibilities and since Allah has given them a lot of work, they deserve to be respected bcoz if they dont get respect then they would seem like a slave. There is no concept of superiority or inferiority in islam, rich or poor, king or labourer, black or white, man or woman, have to stand together while praying infront of Allah. Ofcouse islam being such a wide spread religion and influenced by a million cultures is often modified upon convience.

And here again obedience is limited close to his rights and islamical good think. This is nothing like live with my in laws or take care of my in laws or cook for my parents of vistors. None of them are things where wife should obey. She can voluntary but its not that she get sins for this. But take care of my children or my home yes these are reasons. Or dress modesty and so on these are reasons where she must.

Bro. What are you talking about? You are double talking. Leaders are bosses who gives orders. You may not like the orders but that is what a leader do. Obeying your husband is obeying Allah and his messenger, if your husband, mother, or father, is telling you to do something that doesnt break the rules of Islam, do what they say, its that simple. Dont make silly examples and mislead the muslim women causing them to go to hell. With sill examples. If your wife has no arms we are not expecting her to pick up things. But, If your wife goes out not properly dress yes order her back in and ask, order, explain whatever it takes just make sure she put proper clothes on. Everyone knows what proper is. If your husband is telling you to go outside when its 120 degress or 10 below zero that is abuse, then seek a divorce. But you walking out the house looking like something you would see in an Erotic movies, she should change her clothes. Example, if you have on an outfit that shows your private parts in a colorful and tight way you shouldnt be wearing it outside. This isnt oppression, its saving you and your family from the hell fire.

he is pandering to woman in order not to be attacked by modern woman and get no $$$$. The rule is the same in all abrahamaic religion, for example when prophet Ibrahim tell his wife to go to desert the wife simply obey and when prophet Ayyub vow to punish his wife with 100 stick hit the wife aint rebel --those are from Quran. Bible literally says obey husband like obey the Lord. btw I once debating with my shaikh who said that in divorce wife have rights over everything and man quit only with pants (while Quran literally only says give her some property/rich) I tell him if that is the rule all the caliph or king wife will divorce the husband and own the country 😑
