Among those protesting police brutality in the US, there is a slogan that’s taken hold: “defund the police.” The key idea is a push to move the billions of dollars we spend on police in the US, to social services and other public spending. The disparities between policing budgets and those of other city agencies are massive. And while defunding the police might sound radical, it’s a policy activists have been talking about for decades. For some, it can mean reforms that simply lessen the police role in society, while for others - the slogan is a call to abolish the system and create something new entirely.
These ideas have all converged into the popular “defund the police” slogan, and the renewed energy around the movement is working.

This video is a strawman argument. The police are not here to punish, but to protect by enforcing laws. The police are there to give safety of a person, from someone breaking the law. The safety of each person is required before homelessness, healthcare or illness. If the citizens of a society are free to commit crimes, then nothing you have; home, health, etc... matter. So LAWS are required to protect us from each other, and police enforce those laws. Get it? .. I do like the idea of sending appropriate responders to 911 calls, but I got a feeling, a guy thinking about killing himself waving a gun around... will make a mental health expert VERY hesitant to go in and talk to the guy without some police backup.

out here in Canada, most criminals surrender when the police arrive instead of resisting so there is little police-related violence. this is mostly because whenever a 911 call goes on regarding a suspect (robbery, housebreaking, stabbing,) instead of 2-4 cops you get a massive response of about 15 cops surrounding 2 suspects.

@@borisgoykhman5547 Didn't you learn anything from the video? It means allocating resources to other sectors. Meaning, when people are actually looked after, they will be less likely to commit crimes. I live in South Africa, we have some of the highest crime rates in the world. But its because of corruption and the fact that the people are not priority. Poverty, joblessness and more are a result of the government simply not providing, pocketing billions, and have left the infrastructure to rot for decades. Power outages, lack of water and sanitation. I work in law enforcement, and I do not blame people for their actions, I do not treat them like it's them and me but rather we. US police don't seem use their own discretion to handle the situation properly. People want to be treated nice, if your hostile, they will refuse to comply. It's that simple. I seriously think you need to stop listening to whomever your following, media, politician, Facebook feed or KZfaq feed. Think for yourself, observe from all angles not just one.

03:20 I am a police officer from Germany. And I think this approach sounds good, but it falls short. In my 10 years of service I have dealt with 8 cases of mental problems. In all 8 cases, the subjects were either extremely violent and/or armed and threatened others. In most cases, the person could not be isolated from others. No psychologist would sit down there and discuss it. So only the police remain, because they have equipment to intervene in the event of an attack.

They are solved by making it harder to get guns, better mental health care, and etc. Adding one more police officer in a school is just a misuse of funding. They are not capable of preventing school shootings from happening, the officer would need a miracle to be near the shooter when it starts.

The cost of products and services would skyrocket if monopolized or if companies collude to control supply. Unsatisfied people with violent tendencies and greed for power could form up militias, terrorize everyone. Heck, all enemies of the state could come freely and do as they please cause no coordinated resistance would be there to stop them. Unless of course, you want the country to be run as a corporation. As a cop outside the US, this is really interesting and has helped me frame my understanding of this issue. In the UK the police (as well as many, many other public and community services) have been getting "defunded" for around ten years, and some areas are seeing increased crime, disorder, terrorist incidents and gang-related violence. I completely support defunding the ridiculous militarisation of police in the US and we would all love to see increased funding for mental health services and community services. But at 2am when someone is in mental health crisis or when children are at risk, the police are who attend and assist, rightly or wrongly (personally I want to help people, not arrest them, so I enjoy these kinds of calls, but some police do not). I would argue that quality police funding leads to police being able to recruit the brightest and best, and could improve training that can save lives. I have also seen how understaffing can lead to increased use of force - if there are adequate cops to effect arrest on a violent offender, there is generally less need for an officer to use spray or baton. But I fear that American culture means that increased funding for US cops won't be used to solve some of these problems. I would not want to be a police officer in the US.
@raspberryzz

@James Bond Did you even watch the video? Defunding the police means redistributing those funds to other resources like mental health services, drug addiction professionals or social services; people who are better suited to do some of this work that for some reason is being handed over to the police. No one is saying to get rid of the police all together because that is impossible and they are needed especially for taking care of violent crimes but they never should've had such a huge budget to begin with when we could better use that money to fund other services that will be of better use to the community.

"What if it's not as radical as it sounds?" Doesn't that just mean that it's a bad slogan? If it doesn't communicate its intention effectively, then it does a bad job at being what it's supposed to be. "Defund the police" makes some radicals cling onto it by implicitly overpromising something to the effect of "defund" = "abolish", and it scares off the majority of people who don't realize that "defund" is closer to "demilitarize" and "deemphasize" in intention. Just seems like another instance of well-intentioned groups shooting themselves in the foot due to bad messaging.

@@Kibaoftheleaves I absolutely agree, but human behavior unfortunately doesn't work like that. The function of a slogan is such that if it requires effort on the part of the person reading the slogan to research it before they can make a judgement on it, then it's a bad slogan. Slogans are all about effective communication. The only reason I'm able to make the comment I did is because I did research it and I do understand the actual policy proposals associated with it (the vast majority of which I agree with). But if your three word slogan has a gigantic asterisk that radically changes the meaning from what it appears to be at first glance, it reduces the likelihood of implementing those policy proposals, and it means it's a bad slogan.

Exactly! The term was immediately co-opted by the extreme right-wing. These issues are complex and by using rhetoric that can be easily co-opted or misunderstood it served to reinforce "us" versus "them". I would like to see an undoing of the failed police policies, support what is working, and support demilitarized community-based policing where the police are again part of the communities they serve instead of seeing themselves as military. (They should not be policing as an occupying military force. I served in a combat zone and take offense when police are armed in that way for everyday work.) The slogan should be "reform policing" because this is more easily understood in a soundbite - which is the way most people consume information (as fast-food without any research or through misinformation.

I got a receipt from the supermarket this morning, which was partially folded, and I saw EFUND POLIC So I opened it up, wondering why my supermarket would print something about defunding the police on my receipt. (It said "REFUND POLICY" !)

Body cams are on our side. If police are not using them properly, we need to get them to comply. But, money should be taken out of their other toys, not B-cams.

Most of the time body cameras are used correctly. Often they actually protect officers. There have been plenty of incidents were someone alleged brutality and was proven to be a liar by body camera footage.

Dalek Bricks Many departments does not mean all. Bodycams are effective, obviously. They provide source of evidence, that proves to be absolutely crucial in solving many cases - for the good of citizens and police as well. Why do you think they are not effective again and why are there so many geckos liking your comment?

I hate when people say “oh we have crime we can’t defund the police” but literally if we invested money into things like mental health, education, etc there wouldn’t be as much crime. A lot of crime occurs in poorer places where people don’t have access to adequate education or healthcare so if we had free college it would give the chance for a lot of these poorer people to pull themselves out of poverty which will than result in less crime

Canada has a lot of social programs and 1/5th the homocide rate. Still need cops that are well funded, well trained. Yes, social programs need more funding, but don't steal it away from law enforcement. Raise taxes and fund those badly needed social programs.

It might work in the long term but in the short term you can expect some booming of crime. Also, I know that France is not the same to the USA but I will still point out that some suburbs of Paris benefit of huge investments in education, infrastructure and social programs and yet the criminality remains high there. Anyways, one of main factor of criminality we tend to forget is inequalities. If people don't find a legal way to gain status, they will engage in illegal activities (especially men).
