What Did Ancient Minoans Wear? Creating a Minoan / Mycenaean Capsule Wardrobe

The Minoans were a Bronze Age civilization on the island of Crete in the Aegean Sea and what is now Greece. What did the ancient Minoans wear? Today we are exploring exactly this topic! I've been studying ancient Minoan / Mycenaean clothing, aided by the research of archaeologist Bernice Jones, and I've attempted to create two capsule wardrobes: one feminine and one masculine. I think this is such a cool era to study, and attempting the clothing gives such a robust connection to the very intriguing civilization itself.
*Note: The female tunic can be sewn closed in front as well.

It suddenly struck me watching this that the multilayered skirt thing makes sense given that Crete was at the very centre of the Bronze Age trade network. Cloth of every kind and from all over the Mediterranean would be coming into port. What better way to show off the latest materials than in wrap skirts etc? I imagine the average Minoan woman built up quite a collection she could mix and match and swap with friends. Thanks for this vid. It really brought things to life.

These are really classy! Your renditions of Minoan clothing look like works that women and (possibly men) actually sat down at a loom for days on end weaving into the fabric expressions of themselves that they would show to the world. Comfortable, practical, stylish, and what people would wear to market, a social gathering, or a feast, or an event. Beautiful!

Minos was actually a decent stepfather. Instead of killing the Minotaur at birth, he created a containment facility where he was safe, fed him, and tried. :) now, maybe it was guilt as his actions were what created the circumstances of the Minotaurs birth, but at least he tried. Did better than a lot of people now..

To recreate the famous "bare breasted" look, a lightweight knit undershirt or camisole in a tone similar to your skin would work beautifully, and the typical small bolero could be added, to complete the look. And don't be hesitant about more "gold" jewelry - the ladies loved rings, earrings and bracelets. There are reproductions available online. It would be fun to find some appropriate sandals to finish off the look, and do the dramatic make-up of the day. What a great project, and it looks like the clothing was very comfortable to wear in that warm, seaside climate.

Minoan is definitely a culture I associate with bare-breasted looks so it was interesting to see it attempted at all, and I'm curious how you plan to style these at events when you can't just edit out any clips that show a little bit too much for modern standards!

These are absolutely bombastic!!! I visited Knossos and the Heraklion Archeological Museum in 2019 and I couldn't stop looking at the paintings and statues. The hair, the clothes, they could walk on streets of any big European city in summer and no one would even blink (well, unless they went "tits out"). The 3-layered skirt with the red tunic looks outstanding, like you just stepped out of one of the paintings. Congratulation and thank you for your work and research.

Oh great job researching and creating the outfits! I did a costume based on Catal Hyak back in the 1980s for costume con. I also looked at a lot of Minoan paintings and sculptures but chickened out. I was too busty (34DDD) to feel comfortable. I documented wearing my bra under the costume as a way to get my body to the shape of the statue.

Hi Daisy, Ifellow scadian here. I'd love to see a hair tutorial for the outfit and a series on here would be awesome. It's easier to find patterns for historical purposes. Less so for hair and makeup

Thanks for saying that, and totally agree! Hair is often a hard part for me too. Do you follow Loepsie? She does a lot of historical hair tutorials that help with sca periods. For this one, I sort of pinned the hair up with a clip and bobby pins and wrapped the trim around it as closely as possible to the paintings. There's also some insight via ancient Greek hair tutorials.

Great work. I will definitely make use of your examples. I especially like the wrap-around layer skirts (as opposed to flounces). I have been experimenting with a construction that is not-t-tunic, because of the amount of wastage that is involved in cutting out and throwing away large pieces of fabric. If you have further insights on this, please advise. Are you willing to reveal your trim source? Hand woven trim in the quantity needed to adorn a Minoan robe is difficult to find.

Like! The frescoes show men in just kilts for the most part. Understandable as it is very warm on Crete, but the women wearing multi--layers? Seems to me that would heat up fast.

Was just introduced to your channel via a CoSy21 panel on Opus Elenae's channel, and when you showed us you were working on a Minoan project, I just HAD to come look for this asap!! It's such a fascinating & still fairly mysterious period of history, and I've never seen anyone actually trying to practically reproduce any of the styles in 3D...? They're not very compatible with modern Western standards of modesty for streetwear, so it was interesting to see how you adapted for that too. So wowed by how it all turned out and how much the trim & tassel accents elevated these gorgeous garments! 😍 The natural makeup look with your outfit was very flattering, and the number of variations possible for you both by layering items was super-cool. Just from a sewing standpoint these seem remarkably accessible even for non-expert sewers so I hope your PDF patterns see lots of play! Oh and I'm with your boyfriend - if one is wearing tassels, then twirling them is absolutely de rigeur!! 😂 Good on him for helping with the modeling...

You did not! It's just hemmed, and the trim adds a little reinforcement. You could always reinforce more if needed! I tried more of that "corset" idea before with the snake goddess attempt. What a coincidence that you made this video. I have recently discovered that there are animal shelters on Crete. So I have been watching the dogs on KZfaq, dreaming about adopting one of them. 🙂 There is an ancient dog breed called Cretan Hound. It is thought to be the oldest European dog breed, dating from "perhaps before 3200 BCE". (Wikipedia). So it would have been the Minoans' dog. Takis has over 400 dogs for adopting right now (various breeds). 🐕
