It’s important not to forget that Porto hardly ever play young players, especially if they’re not yet at the level of a league winning starter, which is why Fabio vieira, Vitinha, João Mário and Diogo costa only started playing consistently in the their 20s

True. The youngest was Ruben Neves at 16/17 but it's very rare. All those players you've mentioned won the Youth Champs ( first portuguese team to do so) and even then none of them were Starters in the following season. Vitinha and Vieira are true gems of the game. If Vieira can bulk up he Will be one of the best midfielders of the EPL. His vision and passing is just insane.

Like a lot of Arsenal's signings, this is probably one for the future as well. Give this team a couple of seasons to gel, learn each other's styles, pick up on what they like to do, and I think this could be a genuinely premier league winning team.

I'm a FC Porto supporter, great analysis! I would just correct something, he can't play the Jesus role, yes he played upfront but more like a second striker, to be more precise a shadow striker, he doesn't play as a Nr 9, everything else you did your research right! 👌

Martinelli, Jesus, Saka, Vieira and Odegaard are all high energy players which is fantastic to see - with the likes of Gabriel and Saliba at the back, similar to what Liverpool do, we will be able to eventually push higher up with the confidence that our back line has good recovery speed & good reading of the game to snuff out counter attacks

I think a reason why he didn't start that many games was precisely his versatility - Conceição could sub him in on the last 30, 15 minutes of a close match and get a window of time where the opponent would not be sure how the forwards now lined up (even more as other players, like Taremi, Evanilson and Otávio can also drift to the wings or inside more or less as they please). I seem to remember a goal (not sure if he scored or made a tap-in assist) where he just bursted from the 10 position between the center back and the right back and both reacted too late because they were still figuring out their assignments. Well used he's a difference maker and while everyone knew Vitinha was not staying, losing Vieira was a bit of a blow because I'm convinced he could produce monster numbers this season.

For fans of Porto such as myself, this was a great analysis although i dont agree with him able to play as the number 9. I would say he played more of as a second striker in a 442 diamond, as the lone attack midfielder in that formation or as a 10 in a 4231. He s a very flexible player that can play as advanced 8, a 10 or a winger. My guess of what Arsenal are trying to do is for him to play as the left center mid like a mezzala in 2-3-5 formation like guardiola at man city. He is money on that half space. I would also i have to point that he has to develop more physically. This year he made a great improvement in his off ball defensive work with pressuring which is why he played a lot more, although as a sub. We normally dont play young ins a lot but due to financial issues and obviously the young players (vitinha, diogo costa, fabio vieira and joao mario) are very very good, especially the 1st 3 names.

Spot on. i think we will bed him in with cup competitions and rotational minutes with the view to take the Xhaka spot in 1/2 years when his physicality improves. He's compared a lot to Bernardo but hes more similar to de bruyne(minus the physicality of course)

The signing of Viera has really gone under the radar. Especially with his lack of pre season due to injury. I'm very excited about this player. I have no doubt he will slot seamlessly into this exciting young team. Gives arsenal a different dimension when trying to beat teams. Especially teams set up to defend.

Would rather Odegaard on the left due to his tendency to always shift back onto his left. Vieira, on the other hand, can strike through the ball with either feet, giving him that extra bit of edge when playing as the right floating #8. Exciting times ahead for us! COYG

Net spending is not everything, this seasson is the first one for Arteta after 3 years where he has the squad he wants, with HIS players (bar Elneny/Xhaka/Bellerin), but a team needs to build ecosystems on the pitch. Arsenal is on the right path, a 4 or 3rd place would be accomplishing our achievements, less than that would be a pure failure.

Hes not Santi, Santi was a more complete player than Vieira will ever be and if we have to compare anybody to the great one then Odegaard is the closest thing we have to a Santi. What he might be in terms of a regular role is being a faster Xhaka, not just pace but speed of thought and action, two areas where Xhaka often comes undone. We can see already this season Xhaka is being pushed further forward and while he has actually done surprisingly well with the role change, I'm not a massive Xhaka fan so I expected him to find it too much, it's easy to see how a player who finds it more natural to be involved in progressing play through various phases of the pitch could do it better but also a player who might share some of Xhakas strengths such a penetrative passing, ability to switch play and willingness to disrupt attacks (but with out the Xhaka issue of sometimes he goes over the top and refs have him on their list of ones to watch which leads to the odd red every season).

Hopefully he'll win more 50/50 challenges than Odegaard and Ozil ever did. I'd prefer Paqueta than all of them though, since he's better aerially and great at hold-up play

He cannot play in the nr 8 position, just forget that, he cannot defend very well, but you do not, and i repeat, do not have a better left foot on the squad. Assist wise, he can be as good or even better than de Bruyne in the future.

what premier fans must know about Fabio Vieira is that he played under Conceição's manager. Conceição is a manager who loves to press high, in a similar style to Kloop, but Porto has been playing in a 4-4-2 formation for a very long time, so a lot of players take various different roles during a game and cover as much space they can. Arteta is not known for his high pressing. Let's see how Fabio fits into this team. As Portuguese, even though I'm not a Porto supporter, I'm a Sporting supporter. I think Porto is selling their brightest academy players too soon. Fabio has a very good long shot, his goals are fabulous. He has a very good shooting for a midfielder/second striker.
