There is a branch of Buddhism where they believe that the 'wanting' has to run out its course. That you can't go against the stream. This is correct. If the wanting is deep in your heart but you are too afraid or weak to follow it (fear is a weakness) you will go through a kind of self denial, become a recluse or a monk for the wrong reasons and you will be a miserable monk and a lousy one too because you didn't have the strength or discipline to pursue the want. As the old saying goes, first you must learn the rules in order to break them. First you must become that which your heart desires. In order to overcome it, you must go through it and then perhaps in this life or maybe some future incarnation, you will know and you will practice diligently or devote your life to god but if you suppress the flame out of fear and fear is weakness and pursue a spiritual life albeit superficially you are not doing anyone a favor. Even if you don't believe in reincarnation, living a false one life would be such a waste. In that respect we must not entertain notions of reincarnation simply because you will never reach any goal post in life because your ego will always play tricks on you and say, but there is always tomorrow. This is not true. Remember, there was that last time you had your grandma's cookies without knowing she would soon pass away, you never thought that you will never have them again.

I think this ties in nicely with Swamis 1st point... Viveka. Go ahead and do the thing, but consciously do it with discrimination to see that what you really wanted is not happening. Everytime you do it consciously the pull of the thing becomes less. But we have to do it conciously and evaluate what we got out of it. Was it worth it? Did it last? Do we feel good about it? Etc. The answers I'm sure after a while will point to disappointment. It's at this time the samskaras for these things will weaken. My question is how do you develop bhakti? Is it by reading the past times of the lord? A cookie is a very tangible thing and it's effect is obvious but what do you get as a beginner trying to want bhakti? Where does the joy INITIALLY come from? Sigh... its seems so hard to just transform this petty worldly mind 😢 May God help us with grace and understanding of the knowledge

@@oln3678that is a great perspective. My take would be that gradualy the student would develop an spontaneous desire to cultivate bhakti thourgh the gadrual proceses that occur in every thought, action and habit that slowly change the enviroment and social interactions around you. I believe bhakti is gradual in the life of a yogi that chose to experience urban life and attend to the mundane respondabilities and needs (responsably) and might take many life times till your karmas open up the seed in wich a incarnatiom would achieve bahkti and ananda
