How do you think you would feel if a tattoo you put your heart and soul into a tattoo only to see it be completely backed out? I'd like to imagine that would bruise the ego just a little bit. Or maybe artists don't care once the tattoo walks out of the studio. For this episode of Tattoo Artists React, we asked our panel of tattoo artists what they think about blackout tattoos, as well as how they feel to see their work blacked out.

I just adore black work and a 'heavy' black out tattoo ( I myself have zero tats BUT I loove to see them on others so so much! I think I don't like to stick to one style i just like the heavy ones the best- on others ..) It is bold and I just appreciate the artform, and the people having them.. You rock!

Blackout of my forearm is the only tat I've ever considered doing, I'm 42, have only 2 dots left of something I did on myself when I was 15 (literally scratching it into my skin with ink I got from school) Never considered doing anything else, until I saw a blackout tat, it just looks beautiful on skin imo. If I still feel the same in another half year, chance I do it, is great.

I have just one tattoo in the ditch of my arm but I would love double blackwork sleeves/ something that goes across the chest and upper part of my back too. I see scratchy “metal” styles I really love, the kind of “paint on water” patterns, I think something with a cathedral theme would look really cool. There’s genuinely so many different “styles” of blackwork and they take a lot of dedication but they look cool as hell. I’m definitely somebody who likes big cohesive pieces rather than patchwork, I personally really hate the look of all kinds of different colors and styles all over the body (would obv never walk up to somebody with that and say so, just how I feel abt tats I’d get/ find attractive on others. Like, I find portrait tattoos so weird and even uncomfortable but I know they take a lot of skill) and when I hear how a lot of ppl hate the blackout look I feel insane lol.

How do the two denim hat wearers tattoo with jarg nails on? And blackout tattoos are grand if the tattooist cares enough to do it properly rather than some scratchy grey and charcoal looking thing. Designs using the colour of tattoos underneath or using skin tone walk the line between full blackout and heavy blackwork, while achieving both styles.

I really don't like the look of blackout tattoos though I understand them as a way to get rid of tattood images you really dont want anymore. Though having said that, Daniela's blackouts look like pieces of art and I do like those a lot. Never thought of blackouts in this way. They flow and are intresting to look at and work with the body instead of being just a black field. Then again, anyone who has a black out "field" and likes it, absolutely dont pay any mind to my opinion please. It's irrelevant. Everyone should be able to present and shape their looks how they prefer to. Well unless it's hateful imagery (racist and such) then I do have strong opinions.

For example, if I were to have a design with only white ink in it. Sorry coz I'm not really familiar with how tats age and how ink layers beneath the skin.

All I see with blackout tats is “I want a little bit of what being black feels like but not the whole taco.” Doubly weird hearing tattoo artists being praised for their skill and creativity in making a body part solid black. I understand consistency but jfc if you *can’t* effectively lay down solid black you probably shouldn’t be doing tattoos at all.
