Do you need to be an artist to be a tattooer? It's a question many of us have often wondered. Back in the day, many tattooers would consider themselves craftsmen, not artists. This makes sense when you consider so much of the job was simply applying the tattoo into the skin after somebody picked out a design form the wall. These days, it seems like more and more tattooers are starting out in art school and are already well versed in skills like advanced color theory before ever picking up a machine. We asked our panel of tattoo artists if you really need to be an "artist" to be a tattooer and were surprised by the varied answers they gave. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

I feel like skilled jobs like being a tattooer or mechanic etc is becoming easier not because younger people are better but because information is much easier to acquire

I prefer to only get a tattoo from an artist thats skilled at drawing, I like their art style and comfortable with their portfolio.

I think a tattoo artist is similar to a regular artist the main difference is canvas. I can’t draw, and I’d love to be able to, I just don’t think have any innate skill to be good. I could go into modern art, at least. I do agree there is a difference between tattooist and tattoo artist. If I started tattooing I would probably do script bc I have nice handwriting and can’t draw (except that one eye in the margins of my notes lol)

An artist put a urinal in a gallery and called it art. Art is subjective so anyone can be an artist as long as they make art. They question is what is considered art.

Artists breaking into tattooing and trying to separate "tattooers" from "artists" should remember that tattooing itself is an artform. It's a folk art that requires plenty of additional skills in order to excel. I've seen way too many people who regard themselves as artists put their work and their attitudes far above tattooers. You gotta be able to do the work. Just because you went to art school or learned to paint from a very young age, doesn't mean you belong anywhere near a tattoo machine.

At the end of the day every tattoo artist has their strengths and weaknesses. I’m 40 and I’m not the strongest artist but I’m definitely interested in the world of tattooing. So I’m working on my art and maybe some day a few months from now I’ll find a mentor.

Back in 2016 I went to 2D animation, and in the cafeteria some rando guy came up trying to push his opinion about how I should draw a butterfly... This rando guy confidentiality said he needed a drawing tutor for 3yrs- this guy's drawing skills were weaker than a kindergarter, honestly he struggle with writing letters.

Art is subjective, i now a couple people in Seebia Belgrade who do not know how to draw perfectly but they found their own style and they are living their life. I think if you are passionate enough about what you do you will put your whole energy and time and it pays off with time. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

yes art is subjective. No one can really say who is an artists and who is not.. They all can be artist as long as they create art.

What then, pray tell, is your criteria? Not understanding that art is subjective, is not understanding art. But it isn't that simple. There is, and always has been, a bit of P.T. Barnum in the art world. And not just "bad" art marketed as more than it is. However, any line drawn as to what is or is not art is inherently subjective.

What is an artist? Someone who draws or paints beautiful paintings? Make music? Make films? If an artist put a Urinal in in a gallery and called it art. Is he an artist as well?

*IMO* If you call yourself an Artist; All of your work should contractually be of the same value. If you charge $3000 dollars for a five hour tattoo; Your five hour paintings in all mediums should be guaranteed to hold the same value or possibly increase in value. And negotiated through an art auction. If you can't get the same for a water color painting that is comparable to a tattoo you're doing, You're not an Artist and probably ripping people off; Anyone purchasing from any Artist shouldn't have to pay for ego.

Simple answer is no. Thats why it is milked out and you got a lot of tattoors that want to earn quick money. Reason why the tattoo industry is so trash nowadays.

I’m here to tell you all ya can do whatever ya want. These people act like they where born artists and tattoers, it’s an acquired skill. Art is subjective. Thus, the term "artist" is as well. I think gatekeeping art is a weird flex and some of these artists need to be a bit more humble. Don't forget where you came from. We all started somewhere.
