I don’t remember exactly how it went, but on the old video there was a comment someone made about them fighting a Nago player who dropped his combo to that would have won him the round/game to throw out raw super to sync it with this song. That’s still one of my favorite comments I’ve ever read. RIP to that original comment

Nagoriyuki is a creature out of time. The first verse is about how you can filter anything through oneself to find meaning and better yourself, "one with self and time" alludes to being in tune with the era and also nature ("the snow falling in spring/moon hangs during the day"). Being a samurai, he probably had a master and thus, purpouse, a reason to fight. The second verse is about the present, an era in which technology is seen as the way to effortlessly improve ones life, there is no struggle or reflection, no enlightenment to be gained. You can hear the first verse being chanted in the background to serve as contrast. This is not the world Nago knew and he doesn't agree with it as his vampiric side urges him to lash out ("Let go, can't resist forever") The world also doesn't agree with Nago ("The world is starting to reject you"), hes seen as a villain for he was woken up to serve as muscle for Chaos, not the master he knew. Yet he refuses to lash out against the world ("You're denying your thirst"). That's what he calls his "doom". To succumb to his urges and become a monster. To him that's worse than death because it would be the same as losing his honor and succumbing to a meaningless world, and so he fights to remain himself no matter what until the day he dies.

Dang this needs more likes. I started playing Guilty Gear Strive 2 days ago and I am very new to fighting games in general. Being an artist, I was immediately drawn to the style of this game, and fell in love with Nagoriyuki. (Prolly because I also have a vampire character I’m writing) There seems to be so much lore I’m missing, but thanks for the insight. Sorry for the rant

We can also say that for most of the characters in the Guilty Gear series. How they don't feel like they don't belong in a world that denies them their place and purpose while struggling to find it and be truly content. Sol Badguy for example believes do what you feel is right and walk your own path but the world will judge and condemn you for it because you didn't follow the status quo. And being a Gear makes it even worse for him. Despite how cool the world of Guilty Gear looks its honestly bleak and dystopian.

@@rpmstudios Oh,trust me,Guilty gear has so much lore it’s insane. And Strive is just a conclusion to a big chapter in the Guilty Gear world. Pretty sure there gonna be big changes in the future for this series. And Nago is a brand new character in this long running franchise. A bunch of them have been around for multiple decades.

It is about as batshit insane as you would expect from a fighting game where a vampire samurai fights against super humans in a future where magic has replaced all technology expect for in a floating city ship where they use ballistic missiles to send in their own super soldiers.

Nago is one of the best new additions I've seen in a fighting game series. He fits in so seamlessly with the game's world and their lore and adds a perfect amount where it doesn't overshadow everyone else and stays as its own fantastic addition. Also vampire samurai is one of the coolest combinations I've ever fucking seen

This song is so cool, I love how it captures Nagoriyuki's character. He's a warrior who has lived longer than he was ever intended to, and so now he's out of place. He doesn't belong in this time which does not value his values nor does it have anywhere for him to call home. He is lost without the people and time he once knew, and even worse he is villainized for actions he himself did not wish to commit. His own body betrays him, urging him to lash out and seek vengeance on this world which has alienated him. And then through sheer willpower alone Nagoriyuki refuses, both to lash out as well as to leave his old self behind. He can still learn and grow, but he refuses to leave behind his own values and beliefs as those are a part of what makes him himself. Also as a side note, I love how in the game so many of the arcade modes are just different people going to Nagoriyuki and making him aware that he does have a place in this world. Whether its Giovana or Goldlewis trying to recruit him into the U.S military, or Ramlethal trying to aid him, or Anji and Chipp trying to befriend him despite his vampiric status, or Baiken facing off against him to try to help him overcome his own insecurities, nearly everyone is just trying to make him feel welcome. It's really sweet

The bit from 1:35 ~ 2:00 is something I adore because at first it may seem to just be some random news report inserted into the song...and that's because it is exactly that but if you listen closely the first verse of the song is playing in the back. And the reason I love it is because this is most likely a representation of how Nagoriyuki sees himself in relation to the world, time passes, things change, technology advances...and yet he remains the same, gaining new experiences but at the core being the same man he always was, existing in the background of a world that shifts constantly around him. Also I'd like to point out the focus on the news, instead of being some war or disaster the report is about how technology has advanced and reshaped the lives of people for the better, even if he wasn't part of it he's always kept and eye and ear out for the amazing things humanity managed to achieve even through all the strife they've been through.

I think its kind of the opposite, his words are about how the world has meaning and nothing is wasted, which probably represents his beliefs. But then the commercial starts. It is about a random thing, that probably doesn't matter, but is sayed to solve and reshape lives. His words become the background as the commercial playes, and you can barely hear his words. This represents how meaningless the world has become, how humans relay on technology and other things to help them, without fighting for themselves. As you can hear after the commercial, he feels rejected, betrayed by the new world in which no one has control of their lives, and it makes him want to lose control, go on a rampage against the meaningless world. In other words, the song is about him managing to stay calm and find meaning in things and not falling into nihilism. This could also explain why he hates happy chaos and ino, as ino cannot believe in anything and feels hopeless, and happy chaos fully embraces nihilism, believing in nothing and fighting without a goal other than for the drama and fun of it.

@@maorivirs8752 I've been thinking about this interpretation, and I think both can fit into his character. I think he respects technology and inventiveness (using a modern helmet with a callback to his roots rather than a strictly traditional headpiece), and I also think he could resent the depreciation of self-sufficiency in society, or his traditional combat skills being dwarfed by the likes of guns, bombs and other artillery.

Nagoriyuki is one boss character that felt like a true legitimate boss from the 90's when I first fought him. His speed was incredible, his range was insane, and this theme was fucking incredible as I went at him with everything I had. It didn't help though that I was an inexperienced Chaos main so I got heavily beaten by around the 3 minute mark. It was still a thrilling experience though, and is something that I hope future fighting games have in the future!

I dont think people talk enough about how hard the first three lines of the song go. "Everything in this world leads to soul enlightenment, there is nothing wasted about our lives" Just these first three lines make this the best Strive song in my opinion. Other songs may have better instrumental, or deeper meanings or more extense lore reasons or implications, but the sheer sincerity and positivity behind these words make me wake up every morning ready to face whatever I have to, and that is what a good song does, it motivates.

A black samurai who is also a vampire? Geez, talk about minority of the minority. It’s a joke, guys- Nagoriyuki is probably my favorite character design wise. He looks so cool and also being a walking contradiction as being a noble samurai while being a vampire, which usually aren’t noble at all. So cool to see. His theme is definitely my favorite just because you can jam to it so well and it’s just full of hype for me. Certified bop.

It took me years to realize that "well done! how dare you!" can be a Musashi reference. If y'all look into the "Water" chapter on Gorin no Sho, you may find a section in which Musashi teaches to shout "Katsu!" and "Totsu!" at the opponent in order to unbalance its mental state and make him move as your wish. On my version of the book, the translator indicates that both words were used in Budhist monasteries in order to censure the ill behaviors and thoughts of monks.
