What Do Your Colonoscopy RESULTS MEAN??

Congratulations on finally completing your colonoscopy. I really hope that it was easier than you expected and you had a positive experience with your team. I'm sure when you woke up, you were eager to learn about what the GI doctor found during your exam. While I cant speak to your specific results, I can give you some guidelines on how to understand what the GI doctor/team is talking about!
Since this is colon cancer screening, most peoples' first question is - did you find cancer? This is really rare. Most of the time, we either find nothing, diverticulosis or hemorrhoids. Polyps are also a common finding, but it is important to understand that polyps are not cancer. Did we remove the polyps? Or were they biopsied? I'll discuss when we remove and when we biopsy in the video. If we do biopsy, when will we get the pathology results back? And how do the pathology results affect when you will have another colonoscopy? How many factors contribute to when your next colonoscopy will be?
What if we found a tumor? What next? Ill talk about this as well.

Thanks for posting Dr.I had a colonoscopy 3 years ago with a small polyp removed and was told to come back in 3-4 years.I was a good boy and just did my follow up at 3 years.The Dr found a bigger polyp this time around .When I woke up she said it looked ok but she was sending it out to be sure.The procedure was 2 weeks ago.At the end of this week we are having a video conference to discuss the pathology report..The word pathology scares me.I’m a little worried to be honest. If anybody is reading this and is worried about getting a colonoscopy, please do so . I can honestly say it’s probably one of the easiest procedures you’ll ever have done. You will experience no pain or any real discomfort. At least I haven’t.The prep drink they give you to clean you out the night before is not liked by everyone, but it doesn’t bother me…. Once the anesthesiologist does his magic you are right to sleep and the next thing you know you are waking up. I actually prefer the colonoscopy over going to the dentist!With a great Dr like this you will be in good hands.Get it done

Appreciate your videos .. found them reassuring and calming before my colonoscopy. One thing I notice is that very few colonoscopy videos, in general talk, about the scenario where the outcome is “we found a tumour”. (Yours is the only one). I’m fortunate in that I have a CT TAP on Wednesday and then seeing my GI again on Tuesday of next week so I’ll have full detail soon (so far the conversation has been a short discussion on removing the tumour surgically) but the word “Cancer” has not yet been uttered.

Hi Dr Cooper! Thanks for making a great video for the “regular” people that only need colonoscopies every ten or maybe every five years! The masses have nothing to worry about unless they have family histories of colon cancer or Lynch Syndrome. It’s extremely important to figure these things out early enough to keep colon cancer away. You’re an awesome gastroenterologist and you have a great personality that keeps us healthy through an entertaining presentation!

I had pre malignant polyps removed but I am assuming they were not a big deal since I don’t need another colonoscopy for 10 years. Despite a family history of colon cancer. Thank you doctor, you are really providing pertinent info to us that doctors don’t often explain to patients.

I am not a doctor! I have family history of colon cancer so I started at 40 to have colonoscopies and then every 5 years. I found out that I have Lynch Syndrome and now I have to go every year. Dr Cooper has had many excellent videos, so you should listen to him. He is an expert and he is a Gastroenterologist.

I had 5 flat sessile polyps which were small to diminutive in size. My father had colon cancer. I was told to come back after 5 years. Looks like I might be going back two years early due to my “IBS“ symptoms. I really don’t know what I have, but resembles IBS, IBD, celiac, or something along those lines.

what happens if the polyp is removed and testing shows it is adenocarcinoma. What happens now? Doc said see you in 3 years after procedure but before results came back.

What do these mean,1 “occasional reactive mucosal lymphoid aggregates are seen” 2 “small numbers of neutrophils associated with localised cryptitis and focal extension of acute inflammatory cells into the surface epithelium.” 3 “extravasation of red cells” 4 “focal active colitis, most in keeping with a self limited/infectious colitis”. Hello DR. Can a moderate stenosis/stricture due to EOE go away with food elimination diet, steroids, and a PPI? Or only by dilation?

There’s usually two components to strictures in an immune mediated disease. One is inflammatory and it will improve with medicine that decreases inflammation. A second is scar, which won’t improve with medication, and usually requires dilation.

I can’t be sure without having done the colonoscopy but in general no it should not be as it should now be out of you and no longer able to cause any harm. But it’s something I may recommend be followed in 3 years.

Doctor, please is it possible to feel intestines moving inside the colon literally? My friend keeps saying that though she has flatulence issues or could it be the gas she feels?... please reply.

I have post infectious IBS and sometimes I can indeed feel my colon moving. I've had IBS for so long (got it after food poisoning),it does not bother me.

Hello, I had colonoscopy done a few hours ago. One polyp 4mm removed and one villous adenoma 3 cm found. Doctor recommended a surgery with oncosurgeon. I'm devastated. I had mucusy, bloody stools before colonoscopy. That's the reason I had it done. Thank you in advance.

Depending on location of the polyp I may also recommend surgery or if in a good position to remove, would resect it. Depends on too many factors to make a guess here. You should do well with a 3 cm polyp being removed it’s the opportunity to prevent it developing into colon cancer. Thanks for sharing.

@@MarkCooperMD Thank you so much. Waiting for biopsy results. It says it's 16 centimetres from the anus. 3 centimetres width, 2 height. Villous adenoma. No other description given. I've had mucusy bloody stool for 3 weeks.

That’s simply something the doctor encountered when performing the scope and is merely a technical note, not an actual problem.

I just had colonoscopy a few hours ago. Afterwards the doctor said I had one large polyp and it was removed. That’s all I remember specifically and factually. I do also remember his words/tone to be as if not concerned. But the fact that he called it ‘large’ has me a bit concerned. What does KZfaq doctor pre-suppose based on this info? (While I wait two weeks for my follow up?

Usually a preliminary estimate of follow up is given. If large and completely removed then 3 years is typical. If it was large enough to be removed in pieces then within a year is typical follow up. In either case if described as a polyp there’s not an expectation pathology will show anything bad, and therefore no need to be concerned.

I’m sorry for calling you KZfaq doctor- I think the anesthesia was still affecting my judgment (my wife has told me I was ‘a bit off’) When I read your reply “3years” I thought you meant that’s how much longer I had to live. Holy crap that 5 seconds was terrible. Again, thank you for your direct reply And for your KZfaq page. It means a lot to me. I wish I could give you a thousand ‘likes/thumbsup’

Hey Doc, im 36 and had a colonoscopy and gastroscopy due to some ongoing stomach issues after a viral infection. The doc found 7 polyps which he removed and said no evidence of cancer or inflammatory bowel disease. He did however suggest a follow up colonoscopy in a year. Is that concerning? Or hes just be extra cautious? I did read some reviews about the doctor prior to the procedure that he seems to be very keen to suggest colonoscopies most of the time after an initial consultation. Thank you in advance.
