Here's what 25 years (or 24) looks like on my 1999 Jaguar S-Type. It's not quite what I was expecting...

This the is the key to used cars. When you buy it, you don't know what's be done and what hasn't. But the longer you own it (and the more you do) the more it becomes a known quantity.

£1k on top of £5k doesn't seem unreasonable. If it was another £5k on top then yes, that's a different coversation - but it seems a shame to get rid of it after all the money you've already spent.

This model Jaguar is in demand. This needs to be completely restored with the undercarriage. 1000 pounds is worth the expense. Around the corner will be a happy new owner. This beautiful looking car deserves a second chance in life. If this has repairs as required you will recover your costs.

I'd say it's well worth repairing as it can probably run for a long time as a fun-car and young up-comming classic for good weather, i'm sure it will be sought after in a few years by an enthusiast who'll keep it garaged and cared for. In my opinion such cars were never intended as a daily runners where cost matters.

I bought a S Type Jaguar that was 16yrs old from a elderly guy in July 2018, who had let it stand for over 12 months, only paid £1000 for it, he had started the engine now and then but not run it, within 6mths of me having it, the water system needed replacing radiator, water pump, hoses, then after 12mths, new battery. All seemed fine until the brakes went spongy, the garage informed me that all the break pipes needed replacing. Then whilst they were under the car they found both sills were rotten, they gave me a price for replacing break pipes and welding both sills, in total I've spent around £2000 getting it right, so my car is now 21yrs old this December it's driving like a dream, I'm so pleased I went with my gut feeling and didn't scrap it. Keep the faith Joel. Good luck 👍

It seems you've caught the bug. The Jag bug. I've had Lexus, BMW and Mercedes and I never batted an eyelid when it became uneconomical to repair those cars and I had to say goodbye. Since I've owned Jags, (an XF and now an XJ) I've realised that Jags are different, they get under your skin, they're more than just a car, they have spirit and that spirit is worth saving. Keep up the good work 👏

Love all these people saying fix it, wonder what their bank accounts and financial circumstances are. I have said previously it’s a lovely Jag, but it’s a money pit, and it will continue to take money off you until you have none left to give. A grand to fix the inner and outer sills, and the next grand is just waiting to be needed. Someone has already said you need to get that back bumper off to check the corrosion behind it, next job please !

This is coming from someone who doesn’t particularly fancy this particular example of S-Type (the beige on gold really isn’t my cup of tea): Definitely invest the money, restore it to 100% and keep it forever! Obviously it’s of huge sentimental value to you, obviously also to to your fiancée and you’ll forever be able to say you saved the car that Richard Hammond called hideous and to scrap immediately. Just since you’re doing a lot of bodywork anyways, do the world a favour and have it repainted British Racing Green ;-)

Fix is the RIGHT decision. That is basically a nice car when all the aches and pains are sorted IF YOU PLAN TO KEEP IT longer term. Sporting saloon V8s are nice driving experience. After all, £1000 is not a lot all things considered. A close relative just spent four figures repairing the DMF and stop start facility on his very ordinary Ford about one quarter the age of the Jaguar. A friend needed to spend much more than that on his so called "prestige" German car. Motoring always has costs but classy motoring like that need not cost a lot. If in the end your total spend is around £7000, that would not buy much of a used car and that could come with far more expensive things needing doing.

It's what you want, repair it until the next certain problem, then repair that or sell it, this is not new we have all faced this. My thinking is if you lease/buy/pcp a vehicle like that standard you are paying £4000 a year roughly, so if you get another 3 years out of it your £6000 is cheap motoring, but you always take a risk. In this case I see a car that will appreciate in value due to rarity, but will have a limited market, your big problem is that you are reliant on others to do the work. Most guys running these cars do 80% of jobs themselves, but this requires lots of expensive equipment and time, and of course knowledge. From what I have seen, no insult intended, you cannot do this, get rid of it and cut your losses.

If it were me, I'd get them welded and enjoy the jag for a few years knowing it's mechanically sound, a V8 and it's a fairly rare car. It'll get some value back over the years as long as you don't hoon it around - I could easily see you making £5k back at some point.

I would (and have in the past) just thrown the money needed at it to get it sorted and right. I've never regretted my decision to do that but it's one of those. I put thousands into an old BMW because I liked the car and it gave me so much joy so to me it was worth it, but did I get that money back when I sold the car eventually? No, not even close! So if you're thinking about changing it at some point maybe it's not worth it but if you love the car and you're keeping it and doing it for you then yes it is worth doing because sure you're not getting the money back in its original value but you're creating something money can't buy easily and that's a really solid well sorted 25 year old Jag, they don't make em like this anymore. So I'd say yes go for it! But only if you wanna keep it at least a few years 👍

Get it sorted, rust proof it well and enjoy. I used to own a S-Type, albeit the 3.0 Litre. Great car, one of the best cars to drive I have ever had. Get the sills done this is a common problem on many cars Ive had worse take for example a Rover p6 where the floors are so bad you can see the ground, and under the passenger seat can see the and put your hands through and touch the inner arches. All parts are replaceable with inner and outer sills. Floor pans etc. What other choice have you ? Scrap lorry for a few hundred pounds or breaking and selling bits here and there and turning your property into a scrap yard?.

I disagree I'm afraid, it'll never be that sought after and even if it did we're talking in 20 years or more and it'll have to be in an immaculate low mileage condition to be worth any money.
