15 years as system administrator and main thing what i do (by time consumed) is explanation to users (and managers) what systems can and can't do; that systems whatever amount of money you paid for it never satisfy all your needs you had, have and will have in the future. systems typically specialized and rigid (more "enterprize-grade" - more rigid), so depending on how good you planed your demand that will be particularly that what you will get. for example, you will not be able to convince the processor unit to work faster because its end of fiscal year, what is a sensory surprise for majority non-IT guys 😀

There are many. I would take a look at Western Governors. Affordable and overall pretty good. Does not carry the same value as a MIT or so, but in the end it is the person (aka YOU) who makes the difference.

An excellent video indeed. It certainly gives a very clear overview of system administration tasks. I am focused on Linux based system administration notably Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) & Ubuntu / Debian Linux. Could you kindly share your valuable experience in relation to Linux (Red Hat) system administration. What I am interested to know is what sort of industries vigorously utilize Linux servers (Red Hat / Ubuntu) but more so in what purposes? Thanks for making such useful video. Best Wishes! 😃

I’m looking into a career change as I’m working 60-70 hours a week in construction, and I don’t feel like I want to work my life away…my biggest hobby has been video games/pc building. Very familiar with upgrades, fresh OS systems, troubleshooting, and even some C++ coding… with this skill set and obviously an associates degree or cert if needed, am I already on the right track? Or is it completely different from what I’m thinking?

Building PCs and installing OS and related pieces is a good skill set for entry-level IT support - maybe a bit more if you can compliment it with with a couple of certifications or an IT related associates degree. As you seem good with the operating system and hardware, focus on networking and basic Microsoft Azure knowledge and maybe target 2 or 3 certifications in that area. If you are persistent and build a good resume you may get into a junior level system admin position as well. For your resume - there are ways to showcase your PC building skills. Sell it as something where you have been building PCs for friends and family. Kind of list it like you would list a job. 2018-present - IT Support & System Design. Building custom PCs - including high-end gaming PCs from scratch. Installing Windows operating systems. System upgrades. Troubleshooting. Home networking - including setting up sophisticated mesh networks, VPN, and so on. Provide numbers. Mention how many PCs you build per year. Don't be shy about it. It is hardly convincing a hiring manager if you build 1-2 PCs per year ;-)

I am a Helpdesk analyst and I want to become System administrator or database administrator. Does this job required specific skill like programming or networking? Which is easier job between the two if my work experiences were Helpdesk analyst and service desk agent? If I will not upgrade my skills as a Helpdesk analyst, can I still become system administrator?

Most SysAdmins begin as Help Desk or Tech Support rep then improve their skills. SysAdmins can be Windows Or Linux. I say choose one OS and go that path. As for programming knowing Powershell or Bash is crucial. And for networking you need to know the basics (like DNS, DHCP, how switches and routers work, to name a few.) I hope this helps!

Do you think burn out or being on-call 24/7 smoothens out now that many modern sysadmins are using DevOps methodology practices for automating task as well as cloud computing that's taking over that makes things a little more easier and less stressful?

@@LogicEyes Yeah I'm working as a Desktop Support Technician since my goal is to transition into a Jr. Sysadmin role in the next couple of years while I'm doing my server admin and cloud training. I do want to jump more straight into cloud after that like a cloud system admin or Cloud Engineer. I heard hospitals are the worst place to work for Admins and Engineer's because they are a bit more demanding when it comes to being on-call if anything goes wrong.

Jup, asside I went from sysadmin to devops software engineer and develop software aswell as maintaining and configuring systems and software. It fits me as a glove and I see relations and risks in the bigger picture and all levels of operating. I keep getting alot of offers because lots of companies want generalists and it pays well enough in my opinion. However a specialist more than often, gets a higher pay than someone like me. There is a tradeoff, but luckilly both have plenty job oppurtunities, a generalist a bit more. There are less specialists you would need in the end, but you cant go wrong with either.

Definitely not too late. Manage your own expectations for the first 2-3 years, but there is plenty of room for good people to enter the field and your experience from your previous profession could even be a big benefit.
