hey! i really like how much dedication you put into the baudelaire thing. however, it’s impossible to deny the lemony snicket connection as the genesis of tyler’s fascination with baudelaire. at one point he was tweeting about watching the netflix adaptation of the snicket books and said something along the lines of “i wish i could change my name to baudelaire”

This is a great review, as usual. Learned a lot about Charles Baudelaire who I knew nothing about prior to this. The one Tyler reference, “used to listen to me with their ears closed… now I’m 000000,” is also a play on coding. He’s essentially saying he’s Black and rich. The html code for black is exactly #000000.

What a review, so astonishing and refreshing, been a Tyler fan since years. There's also another album about travel, luxury, gratitude mixed with a bit of Wu-Tang called The Sailor by Rich Brian and it was released in 2019. It also features RZA, giving it an extra Wu-Tang layer, hope you check it out!!

Yo, I just want to thank you for this reaction video for CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST that you've made. Not many albums are worthy of an intellectual discussion like this, but this one definitely qualifies. As a 50yo brother whose been accused of "acting white" most of my life, there's no one in the game I identify w/ more than Tyler (although J. Cole comes close). Speaking of Cole, before this dropped my favorite so far this year was The Off-Season, but now....wow. The Off-Season was Alpha Centauri, this..CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST is Betelgeuse. And my favorite track is MASSA too...somehow I knew you were going to say that was yours too. The drum breaks on it are beyond. Thematically, WILSHIRE, I think, grounds the album, as Tyler draws us into his inner conflict...which is the secret of all great literature....in his first person narrative...and his inner conflict is between GRATITUDE and WANTING MORE...and, to paraphrase the Tao te Ching, "...wanting more is what causes unhappiness, always..." Most of all, thank you for reminding me that the secret to life is GRATITUDE...Overall, great video. I learned a lot and relived Tyler's best ever album through new eyes. #100

Actually really loved your in depth analysis of the album, a lot of cool thoughts on here. If you haven't listened to Tyler's previous records, i definitely would recommend that to gain a deeper perspective on his career path as an artist and on his new album. Tyler drops callbacks to his previous records on multiple tracks of CMIYGL and does it in a way that says "This is where I'm coming from and now you're hearing where I'm going" He's all about growth and always moving forward, every record of his takes on a different persona and builds a new picture, so it would be worth the discussion, to check his other albums.

Encore merci, your thoughts are precious for my understanding ; I am not a native speaker so I need double effort to get to the actual meaning of his lyrics.

Im not far into the video so theres a very good chance you touch on this later but i think the connection between the album and charles baudelaire is pretty obvious and surface level one- les fleurs du mal and call me if you get lost have a shared emphasis on travel. Its referenced on safari and in other places, tyler recurringly brings up his passport and mentions the first time he left LA as an expansive life changing moment for him. I think the baudelaire name seems to tyler like something that is foreign (in a somewhat fetishized way, imo he has kind of has this fetishized view of france and french culture that a lot of americans do in his work for a while now-i dont necessarily mean this in a bad way) and somewhat opulent and well traveled and sophisticated- and i think that idea/persona helps him find solace and clear his head from the relationship he elaborates on as the other main theme through the album. Just a guess though
@EvWuzhere
@EvWuzhere 3 жыл бұрын
Ok you do on touch it and kind of dismiss the travel connection as one thats too simple but i honestly dont think it is or at least i think it is simple but still the truth? I mean the poem you read after that also kind of affirms that idea that travel is the main connective tissue between them-maybe just saying saying 'travel' is an over simplified way of putting it but tbh for the most part i dont think the baudelaire connection runs too deep or complex here. Not that tyler cant have some deep thought provoking theme behind the album, but i felt like in comparison with his last 2 releases this was a much more surface level album- it still had some thoughtful sentiments but i think there was definitely more of a focus on just kind of making a banger old school type mixtape that kind of mixes together all of tylers previous works. Unlike his more recent albums imi this one doesnt present us with a new side of him. We've already seen him present himself as the side lover with unreciprocated feelings, we've seen this braggadocio from him before, and him talking about following your pleasure, we've even seen this luxurious travelling type persona from him before. Idk i just think the charles baudelaire connection is actually somewhat surfacey judging by the context of the rest of the album

Hey I really loved massa I didn't analyze it that deeply but I also thought the line "loving people in the shadows" referenced "living in the shadows" from smile by Jay-Z off4:44 But I really loved the videos I'm gonna sub.

hey professor skye, i absolutely love your videos, been watching them for a couple of months now! i think you should check out the new album by the murlocs called “bittersweet demons”. it’s the side project from king gizzard’s harmonica/keys player and it goes into a sort-of vintage 70’s ballad direction that i think you could really enjoy!!

I thought when "Lumberjack" came out it sounded very sonically similar to a lesser known artist, named Chester Watson, 2015 track Dead Albatross. Then HE came out with the Baudelaire thing and I couldn't think that it was a coincedence, but I don't know which discovery was first for him. Perhaps he heard dead albatross, then looked into the meaning, and came across Baudelaire? Who knows. Maybe it is a coincedence, but it is fun still.

Great take! Apart from what you've mentioned, i have something to add regarding the album's narrative. I think Tyler is telling us this story in a non-linear way. I doubt that this album is not coherent conceptually, since this has never really been the case with his music. WUSYANAME and SWEET/I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE are the "present time" of Tyler's story with this woman. WUSYANAME is him falling for the love interest, and SWEET/I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE is a beautiful and realistic description of what's really like to be lead on. Clearly emphasized by the track's duration, along side the sweet beginning and growing disappointment near the ending. Then there are the "post-heartbreak" tracks, that fall under two categorizations. The tracks that directly deal with the travel them and upbeat production (aka a lot of DJ Drama doing his thing). Your entire video deals with these tracks specifically and i don't really have much to add regarding them. The other tracks are the ones that he's using to ground himself. Where he's being very personal about his humble start, where he's grateful and blessed for what he has, and ofc willshire where he reflects on the entire situation with nothing but acceptance. Another part of the album that is very prominent is him "being a bad person". He blatantly says it in some tracks, but it's also accentuated with the mentions of WOLF HALEY, his evil alter ego from his album wolf.
