It starts 6/8, 6/8, 5/8, 6/8, then 4/4, 4/4, 3/4, 4/4 then straight 4/4. The time signatures keep changing throughout the song. Kai has a click track to stay in time with the orchestral backing track. The audio is probably coming from the drum cam audio track.

as a drummer I thought he would have caught on right away, sounds like he was trying to count the beginning in 4/4, but caught on when they did go to 4/4
@Anttik_
@Anttik_ Жыл бұрын
@@biglew1161 It is easier to understand if you hear the counting before the song starts, like in 2013 Wacken version where Jukka counts the start with his sticks: ONE-two-three TWO-two-three. The drumming of the very first part is kind of misleading, it is a bit hard to understand what the time signature is. If you hear the counting of 6/8 in the beginning then it is much easier to get.
@Anttik_
@Anttik_ Жыл бұрын
And yes, the audio is from the drumcam, so it has nothing to do with what the players or audience are hearing. That's why the rest of band and singing is a bit delayed on the background.
@billattercliffe8655
@billattercliffe8655 Жыл бұрын
@@Anttik_ It also explains why he doesn't like the audio of the snare as the audio feed is not coming from the drum kit mics. I'm guessing they used only the in-camera mics as a better mic would be picking up a lot more from the other instruments and Floor's vocals. The range of in-camera mics being so limited, it works for this purpose.

There are no mistakes, other than in the analysis. Hahto is a metronome and they play to a click to match backing track. The audio is just delayed. Watch wintersun "Sons of Winter and sun" and get blown away.

There are some great drum cams out there of Kai. Weak Fantasy and Tribal for Nightwish, Sons of Winter and Stars for Wintersun even his early days in Rotten Sound. He also gives a lesson to a fan from the local area before most shows and has done laods of clinics. Considering his off the scale talent and skill, he's one of the most down to earth and humble guys in metal. His idol is Nicko from Maiden.

I am pretty sure that there is no mistakes in the sound of the drums or his playing. He's that professional and accurate. He's studied by some great blues etc drummers in the U.S. years ago. Nicko from Iron Maiden also ranks him high as he has asked Kai to try his kit out too. And as someone said you could say Kai is more like Neil Peart whereas Jukka (the original drummer of Nightwish) is more like John Bonham. This comparison was said by Marko Hietala their former bassist.

I kind of think about Jukka as comparable to John Bonham, someone who beats the hell of the drums, and Kai as Neil Peart, a human metronome with great fill control. Bonham and Peart are considered two of the greatest drummers of all time, so I don't mean my prior statement as meaning that's where I place the 2 NW drummers. I'm comparing styles and then comparing them to each other only. Both Jukka and Kai are amazing drummers, just different styles. You need to listen to Kai in the Wintersun video "Suns of Winter and Stars", the studio rehearsal version. That will tell you how incredible he is.
@amygoodson-catlady
@amygoodson-catlady Жыл бұрын
To add to Gene's note... Kai has some fantastic clinics and showcases available to watch...you will appreciate him so much more from those...he can switch lead hands from right to left and back...just to entertain himself! And the perfect posture... I love watching Jukka play, bc he's a showman, and always looks like hes about to take flight...but Kai always looks like everything he's playing (at least w Nightwish) is just passing time at a mediocre job. I'm NOT saying Nightwish music/drumming is mediocre...I'm saying that I've seen *amazing* things from Kai, and he just makes it look so easy!!
@genekent2391
@genekent2391 Жыл бұрын
@@amygoodson-catlady exactly. I've seen Rush twice live, and Neil Peart looks as if he's trying to figure out where to eat after the concert. He is playing these incredible fills and beats, and he looks like it is effortless. Kai reminds me of him so much it is hard to explain. Bonham was known for playing with 'logs' instead of regular sticks, and just beating the literal hell out of his set. Bonham was sharp, and if you listen closely, he could play some very complicated jazz beats, but his playing was bombastic. The reason Zepplin disbanded after he died was because he was the heart of the band. Imagine, a group with Robert Plant, one of the best frontmen ever, Jimmy Page, who is on the Mt Rushmore of guitar players, and John Paul Jones, one of the best rhythm men to ever play bass and keyboards, saying they can't continue because the drummer is gone. It happened. I don't say that Jukka and Kai are to be mentioned in the same breath with Bonham and Peart. I mean, those two were arguably the best drummers ever, in all genres, throughout all eras. I just mean to say that that's how I see their playing styles.

As a former sound tech, you better make sure we remain your friends, especially when you're also singing hehehe, we can be evil when you piss us off :P But i am sure you know all about the evil sound techs can do hehehe. Jokes aside, sound techies come in many "flavors" and many are stubborn as F. That being said, i think i can honestly say i was one of those techies who actually tried to listen to the band and give them the time needed for soundchecks and setups. But then again, it was more of a hobby for me so the love for the job never changed, it never became a drag so to speak. Yet.. i would be lying my arse off if i claimed i never took revenge against annoying musicians lol, i sure have.. especially when i worked monitors, never mess with the monitor guy hehehe. You will know this but.. it is never smart to piss of either of the main sound technicians, pissing of the FOH guy is bad, pissing of the monitor guy is.. deadly.. never ever piss of the monitor guy or girl is what i'm saying lol. (they hold your musicians faith in their hands, do even think about it... lol) Not ashamed to say.. i've cut of monitors just before a big belt by the singer... it never goes well for them ;) Dang you, that tech banter has me all in nostalgia land here ... lol, was fun times anyway ;) Thnx for the video and react from your buddy :D

The groove in the beginning is exactly as intended, with a lot of changing meters in it! (and on a click track and synchronised with an orchestral backing tape) So there is NO possibility of beeing "not locked in" (that would have caused a giant mess). It is just that the composer WROTE the music like this.
