What does down fill power rating mean in jackets?

The Fill Power Rating of down measures the strength of the downs ability to resist compression. Measuring how much a product will expand or 'loft' after being compressed. Down is still one of the best insulators out there.
600 fill down is warm, lightweight and durable. Ideal for general
outdoor and day-to-day use.
700 fill down features a strong warmth-to-weight ratio and
provides lightweight insulation across a range of temperatures.
800+ fill down has outstanding warmth from a high cluster-to-feather ratio and features increased loft and compressibility for superior warmth and performance.

The trick is comparing fill power to fill weight. For example, is a 700 fill power jacket with 5 ounces of down warmer than a 600 fill power jacket with 7 ounces of down? I have a packable down jacket with about 4 ounces of 800 down that weighs nothing and folds into its hood, great for 0C days hiking or going to work, but not warm enough for standing still at 0C. Fill power, fill weight, and exercise level make 3 sides of a triangle.

A 600 fill power jacket with 7 ounces of down should be warmer than a 700 fill power jacket with 5 ounces of down. It's just math. We know 600 fill power means ONE ounce of down takes up 600 cubic inches, so a 600 fill power jacket with 7 ounces of down will definitely take up 4,200 cubic inches, while a 700 fill power jacket with 5 ounces of down only takes up 3,500 cubic inches.

Synthetic down fill is taking a what used to be disposable portion of oil. It’s coming out of the ground whether we use products made from various components of oil or not.

2:03 wrong explanation. How can one jacket be lighter than other if it is stated than both are 5 ounces.

Rihards Grebuns I think it means in regards to the volume capacity of the jacket. You can have a 5 ounce capacity filled with 650 or compressed with 700. Think about a 2 litre plastic bottle, you can put 2 litres of water in there or only 1 litre, but the capacity still remains 2 litres.
