Hi Guys - very informant information. When we travelled 'quick time' our accommodation averaged at $74 per day across the world, but totally agree when staying for long periods in the same place proper savings can be made by renting accommodation. We did a business class world ticket which covered most of our long hauls and tried to do night flights only so that we would save on the cost of one night hotel accommodation. When we did Thailand we did 5 internal flights averaging out at $122 per flight for the two of us. We worked on the principle that we may never be able to afford to do our world tour ever again so we hammered doing everything we thought was worth doing whist we were in every country which adds a lot to a daily budget. Under entertainment it cost us more because we paid to get into lots of things for example the Grand Palace complex in Bangkok, which cost 1000 baht for two of us ( $29) - Love your channel Phil & Judith

Hope you’re both feeling better soon. Well done with being under budget, especially at a time when we’re experiencing high inflation.. We are over budget unfortunately, I didn’t realise accommodation would be so expensive. Spain is not actually as cheap as I was expecting. I guess it doesn’t help that we’re here during a big festival either. Once we get to Asia it should be much cheaper.

I tried early retirement at 40+ and found that I actually missed working plus money was running out faster than expected due to sudden unforeseen health issues. Also, costs are usually higher per person if traveling alone (which I was). So I am back at work and will try early retirement again in a few years time, in the meantime learning from your experiences. I like your honesty and no-sugar coating!

Great video. Hope you're both feeling better soon. Our ideal travel budget will be a fair bit lower than your own, at least for the first few years. My partner is a little older than myself, so he may insist on upgrading the accommodations at some point (budget beds are not always the best on the back). We tend to drive motorcycle which reduces are transportation costs from city to city. Right now, we are traveling to the more affordable locations. Your video gave me hope that when we pull the trigger to travel full-time, we can afford a little more luxury and even consider a few destinations we thought may have been out of our price range. Thank you for what you do!

We spent March and April in southern US and just got back from a month in Toronto and Montreal, Canada. We tried to be frugal and our Airbnbs were very modest and yet we spent way too much. Hi Neil and Sarah, Well done on another great video! I hope your covid symptoms go away soon. The way you balance your commentary and banter between the two of you is quite remarkable. We, your audience, enjoy your dynamics as a couple as much as we do the content of your videos! Well done of course on being under budget - not that I doubted it for a moment. You are like me - human calculators - which just means you have a sense of what you are spending. I spent a couple weeks on vacation with a friend who commented that I seemed to calculate everything - I think it was a criticism? My view is that in the past particularly in Europe after the war people needed to budget and mind their expenses just to get to the end of the month. If they didn't they couldn't replace their worn out shoes or had to forego the Sunday roast. Yes, many of us are more affluent these days, but for some getting to the end of the month is never a problem because there is the credit card to tide them over! Yes, my friend is nowhere near being able to retire and says she guesses she will need to work until she dies - yes and she is a bit fed up with her job (we do live in Honolulu...so not all bad for her!). I have got her now investing and doing a budget and no I am not going to be her retirement ticket! Anyway, keep up the good work and the great life! Cheers, Rod PS I would be curious to know how you are balancing investment performance in these turbulent markets. That inflation has hurt both short-term and long-term strategies. I am beginning to think of slowly moving some of what has been a very large defensive cash position into longer term bonds while staying the course with my medium and long term stock positions. My sale of a very large holding in a very famous bank's stock (former employer) was looking a bit foolish last year - not this year!
@2GoRoam

Hey Rod! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment as ever. Firstly thank you for the kind comments about our onscreen chemistry, this is our biggest battle with KZfaq and we are working on it constantly. If only you saw what went on behind the scenes! Yes, why not be a human calculator eh, it is one of the most important things to tame in life... spending. You are doing the right thing and your friend.... well.... For investment, we have 2 years of money out of the markets that we are drawing on at the moment, we generally have a relatively low bond holding and as such we are still mainly in equities with Vanguard all market funds. The other really important thing we are doing is not listening to what experts in investment are saying.... seriously. You listen to them and they will tell you everything and you can't work with any of it. Stay the course is what we are doing. Have you read the book "A Simple Path to Wealth" by JL Collins? I highly recommend it. Best regards, Neil & Sarah

@@2GoRoam Hi Neil and Sarah, Great minds think alike. I too have significant holdings with Vanguard - low fee index funds. I like some of what Jack Bogle had written - founder of Vanguard. I worked in banking for years at a decent level - so built up a good nest egg from the get go. I retired at 43 from banking to become a “soccer mom” to my three young kids. I then started teaching finance at a major university on a part time basis. In fact, I have taught personal finance classes to non-finance majors. So yes a bit of background but also appreciation for what you do and have to say! So again compliments! Rod

Would be nice to see something like this now that you are 4 years into retirement. Have an idea how you have adjusted your budget in these last few years, especially considering inflation and if you have maintained your buying power. Glad you guys are back and good luck with the second channel as well. Also, although I know Brazil has a bad reputation as being dangerous, much of it is just that, if you know where you are going it's actually a wonderful country with many amazing experiences to be had at an affordable budget. Give it look sometime. The South, Santa Catarina is especially safe and beautiful.

I can't give you an exact budget because of the variables in exchange rates and inflation, but I think you are doing really good. One thing we have done doing our travels around the state we live in is check the local paper Part of traveling is meeting people sometimes there will be notifications for festivals and church carnivals that are free of course you would have to pay for food, but your going to eat anyway. We had a wonderful time meeting and talking with new people. Hope you two are better soon so you can resume your travels.

Love it! I was excited I could watch your video while I ate my lunch. I always look forward to your new content. I think due to geographic arbitrage you should keep your budget as is for the next year. The first year you spend time in the US which is very expensive. A very interesting video; many thanks. I suspect I would spend a lot less than this; partly because when I was young I did a lot of hitch hiking, sleeping out, and extreme low budget travelling, and partly because I'm just naturally pretty frugal. Where I might spend more than you is that I very soon get tired of trawling the internet for the best deals on flights and accommodation etc, so could well spend more there. I think that that would be offset by the fact that I would want to spend longer time in one place and do fewer big moves. IMO the real key to success and lack of stress is to always spend less than you can afford. When I was young I remember an older experienced traveller telling me to have £1,000 and travel like I had £100. I think that's a good plan for life in general.

First, sorry to hear you are not well. I'm sure you will be feeling well and back at it soon. Congrats for being under budget. That is quite the accomplishment and reassuring for many that are contemplating this lifestyle, I'm sure. I feel you have lived very well on that budget. Regarding your budget for the coming year... Maybe you do not need to increase it considering you will be traveling through a less expensive part of the world? Despite inflation, you will already be experiencing more value for your money in Southeast Asia. Then again, you may be of the mindset that you would like to further increase your standard of living this year. Certainly nothing wrong with that if it falls within your budget. When we started our journey a year ago, we kept our budget artificially low as an experiment. The expectation was that we would increase it in subsequent years to get a realistic view on how increased spending impacts our perceived quality of life. However, we had a blast this past year and never felt deprived. We are now traveling through an even less expensive part of the world for the foreseeable future. As a result, we don't see a need to increase the budget. This has the added benefit of drawing less from our investments while they are down. It will be interesting to see which direction you go with your budget and the impact it has on your quality of life if any.
@2GoRoam

Hey Skip! We are just the same as you, we were keeping things artificially low for the same reasons then realised that actually, we are living it pretty large on this low budget. You can easily budget £35000 in Year 2 if you are continuing the majority of your journey in Asia. And staying in Asia is probably a good choice during the current market and economic turmoil...Inflation in SW Asia countries is still low (when compared to the UK an USA). Hey Fiona! Yes good point, we can all flex our lifestyle to combat parts of inflation can't we. We like that a lot 😃👍 Best wishes Neil & Sarah

@@2GoRoam yes, I think the noise from the financial news makes people anxious and they go do retail therapy 😜🤑 If you are tracking your spending regularly then you can see what is really affecting it. For instance, they keep saying meat is going up…I have no idea 🤷‍♀️ I budget $400 a month for groceries, but healthy wise I want less red meat anyway. All my budgets are just baselines - like you, I can spend more if I want to. If I feel like buying steak I will cause… I want steak 😍

Haha absolutely Fiona! Get that Steak when you want it! Yes, we just keep away from all the analysis, it isn't good for anyone because what can the average man in the street do. Just be on top of their own stuff, not become a macro economic genius :-)

How do you find decent accommodations for under $50 a day? I usually pay $250.

It really depends on what countries you are traveling too. I'm in Central and South America and $50 per day is a nice Hotel/Airbnb, but it does take some research to find them.

Hey Randy! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! This was the 2nd half year rundown. Mexico and the US we put in a video where we discussed the first 6 weeks of travel. Hopefully you can check that out. Best regards, Neil & Sarah

"Unicorns"!! Covid hit you hard enough to use unicorns. You can use them in more vids? The biggest surprize? Snowed in Athens!! I had no idea. Where are Mexico numbers? Maybe I missed it: How does your time in Mexico compare? TY!

Hey Tim! Really appreciate the comment as ever. Unicorns seemed a great option. We covered Mexico costs in our first half of year spending some months ago. Mexico was really cost effect, we actually went detailed into some of those costs, if you look back for videos on the cost of living in Mexico City of Queretaro, you will likely find those pretty interesting. Best regards, Neil & Sarah

❤ Hello Sarah & Neil. Wow you are the most beautiful and inspirational couple. Thank you for your gift. I would like to know out of all the places you have been to, where would you settle down if you were planning to choose a base? Which country/countries were you happiest in and felt that you could see out your retirement? And please also, which countries/continent would you run a mile from? Which is most suitable for retiring couple and which is most dog friendly? Finally do you have website or email? You guys Rock! Bless you ❤

Hey I D! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! We loved Turkey and are loving Thailand, we could settle in either of those countries. Mexico was also beautiful and we will return to give it a proper look over. So far there hasn't been a location that we haven't liked. Lets hope it stays that way! Best regards, Neil & Sarah

I will guess a new budget going forward of 8% more due to inflation for a total of $47,500.
