You probably need a lock up and leave apartment in UK. Somewhere safe from burglars. Tax liability usually after 6 months or intention to settle depending on country. Otherwise UK based, which is pretty good for ISA/pension investments. You may lose NHS entitlement sooner than you think, but may not be enforced. Some people resident in Spain kept UK park home, flat or house and travelled back to UK for big treatments, prescriptions. Should have been charged. Interesting to see what you'll do to solve these.

We have been "on the road" for 7 years and have had similar situations. It is tough. But it would have been even if we weren't mobile. Just different. It makes you question every thing. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Easier said than done.

Don't waste your time responding to my comment - PLEASE! Loved this video - it was from the heart. Your heads are obviously all mixed up but, above all else, don't stress or worry as everything always works out. Back here in the UK just concentrate on family - forget us. If I can help out in any way from Yorkshire, get in touch, even if it's just to have a rant about something. There is nothing that the both of you can't work out together, just remember that - you've achieved so much with your new lifestyle. And, finally, hugs are great - dish them out often. x

Ah, guys! I moved from my lifelong home of Nashville, Tennessee, USA, to San Miguel de Allende, MX. You two were a huge help! I sold my house, my car, re-homed my precious cat; gave away tons & tons of things and down I flew (having pre-scouted SMA!) It was my 5th time in MX, and 2nd in SMA. No regrets, then or now. I couldn’t imagine going back and leaving this beautiful place that is now home. I would be sad & I would be longing for SMA. You asked. That’s it.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. We had a fairly similar situation. We started our nomadic life this February. In early July, my husband's mom passed away. We flew from Istanbul back to the U.S. and were able to spend 1.5 months in the area he is from in order to help with fixing up the house and other items. In bad times, it is nice to be able to have the time and money to shift plans as needed. For us, this time was both physically and emotionally exhausting, so after finishing what we needed to do in his hometown, we decided to just chill in another part of the U.S. for a few months and catch up with friends. We thought about signing a year lease, but ultimately I think we want to get back on the road. It's also WAY less expensive to be anywhere else, so I'm ready to get back to rentals for under $1,200 per month and dining out meals for under $5. My advice would be to take care of what you need to take care of for the estate, see the people back home you want to see, and then give yourself permission to plop somewhere for a little bit and just rest (whether that's in the UK, back in Thailand, or somewhere else entirely). My husband and I are the same age as you and Sarah and both retired in April 2021. We sold our home but kept our summer cottage where we now live when we’re not travelling. We are only semi-nomadic since we have 2 dogs, 2 young adult children and 2 ageing mothers. We love watching your videos and admire the courage it took to become true nomads. You are navigating through this stormy time wonderfully which serves as an example to those of us still fearing the “what ifs”…. Wishing you strength and courage as you put your nation’s Queen and your family’s King to rest.

You provide an honest straightforward few of the journey you guys are on. My wife and I are about a year older than you, and hoping that in 6 years time, we too can live a purposeful life and travel.

Hi Neil and Sarah: I am sorry to hear of your loss. My you find peace and comfort in your return to the UK. Being retired nomads, my husband and I have been able to return to the US periodically when family needs required. It gives you the time to put in order the plans and issues you need to ensure you UK life is "orderly". Give yourself some time to grieve as needed and when the time is right, you will be able to make a decision on traveling overseas again. Although we have not committed to staying in one place for a year - we tend to 3 months and then move to another fun (inexpensive location), we have trouble staying in the US for 3 months at a time. Each time you make a decision to "travel" you start a new adventure - may this new adventure for you bring answers to your questions and a chance for you to recharge and carry on.

We sold everything and went off travelling in August 2019, yes then we had Covid hit in March 2020 we were in Malaysia, the Malaysian government effectively told all foreigners to leave, we returned to the U.K. we had no home just a VW camper we lived in it for 10 months. We have a small home now but are realising we are back in the same position we were before we left to travel, so be wary of that 🤣 Sorry to hear of your loss Neil x

Everything you are going though is one of the key things im worried about looking to leave the uk with elderly parents.. and the challenges you highlighted are also ones I was wondering how to solve.. how to maintain an address and status in the uk .. and all the tax implications will be very interested in a detailed video on all of the possible solutions put forward here and also my condolences to you on losing your dad… please please keep up the you tube this is real life not “instagram travel” what you are documenting is much more interesting and valuable

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. I lost my mum several years ago to Parkinson's. It's events like these that are actually one of the big reasons for going on this journey too, as one of the most important reasons for me is to spend more time with the people that we care about.

As someone who has lost their remaining parent about 4 years ago, having my siblings to help was critical to sorting thru things, both physically and emotionally. It also created the opportunity to do some inclusionary planning with them. We now go on cruises together and long distance bike tours....so it worked out well in the end. I myself have about 20 months till me and the Mrs go exploring fulltime. Keep the faith and best wishes to you both. Thank you for sharing your stories.

Hey Sarah and Neil-wish I could help you with the "complications" when you get back to the UK! I'm from the US so no hope at all. In any case your sincerity about how you conduct your life is what keeps me watching your videos not what your adventures are about. ( Although I enjoy those videos too!) All will be sorted and then you can start again. Always disappointing when life plans are sidetracked. Right now I'm dealing with a very sore hip and an upcoming hip replacement in Dec. Not in the plans, but something that needs taking care of. Luckily, like you, when this bump in the road is over I can continue on my travels. Wishing you the very best!

Dear Neil and Sarah, I hope that you are in a good place today. Your situation was so overwhelming, and it had to be very difficult to weigh all of the options and finally come to the conclusion that you did. That apartment was the hot setup and I'm sure on some level it was crushing to make the decision to give it up for now. It's hard enough dealing with the loss of a parent but this does kind of feel like having the rug pulled out from underneath you even though it is your decision. In the end, it is probably the most practical choice- but painful, too. You will move through this and 6 months from now, you will probably be somewhere that you couldn't have imagined being today. That is the result of the 90% factor. I've been in situations where the rug is pulled out and it's dealing with the shock and then the grieving process of the life change that is the character-building stuff. (Easy to say after the fact. ha!) Maybe it's fitting that your dad's funeral is on a sad day for the world. Change of subject.....I really enjoyed seeing the apartment and the shopping mall and the life you are leaving behind for now. We will be watching to see how you are doing. I wouldn't mind seeing some sights in the U,K. and the planning papers.

We can go anywhere to see pretty pictures of far off places. I appreciate your efforts to help us experience the real life as you live it, and not a sanitized portrait. It seems mundane, but it's really interesting for me to see basic things like how you pay bills, since in a few years I expect to be in a similar position. I also appreciate the description of going to eat in a restaurant and not speaking the language. I have lived and worked on four continents, but always to places where I spoke the language or had someone nearby to help translate. Seeing you navigate what to me is intimidating is helpful in a way that you may not recognize. Thanks.

You are both dealing with a lot right now between the loss of your dad and the other “complications.” I can see why you would be disappointed to have to give up the beautiful apartment and put a hold on your training. I suspect you will be back - and if not, it would be because you’ve found another adventure! "Lake" You know where Chang Mai is, so it is not so far away any more. You have made friends there and can always return, just as you can return to your travel plans in the future. My experience is family comes first and it is now time you must spend together with those closest to you for so many reasons! Hey, folks. I have been watching over the last eight months, or so. I'm also 55, but look like a stunning 49. Back in 2018, both of my parents passed within a month of each other, 2000 miles from where I lived, and I was the sole heir and executor for both. I was making $100,000 a year in a place that I loved, but my job was becoming untenable for many reasons. We decided to chuck the career (tech, once your're out at 50+, you're out), in order to manage the estates. That process took nearly a year. We are still in our home country, due to work, Ukraine and finances. Living semi-retired at 20-ish hours per week in low pay fun jobs. Stay positive. You've expereinced more global travel and insights into various lives recently than most people get for their entire lives. You have the flexibility to do what you need to without losing major things. Travel will be there when you can resume. Life sometimes forces us to rise to the occasion. I suspect this will be an important emotional process, which you should not deny. There may be silver linings, and there will definitely be resumed global living, with more things to talk about. Wishing you both luck and strength through this.

I cannot relate to forty years old or less content unless they are just providing information, many of those YT people who have retired and got married girls who talk about is expats and processes, ! Hi Both, with regard to post any friend or family you can use for your mail will be best, if they can add you to the electoral role even better. With being in/out of U.K., you decide where you are tax resident as long as you do your self assessment each year and have a U.K. bank account and address you have nothing to worry about. This is something we did when we were travelling pre covid. Hope this helps x

A really interesting video, I think this could be a great opportunity for a re-set once the other things are sorted. As an Australian, if I was you, I would be looking to eventually look more at Europe. I'm thinking say Romania, Portugal, perhaps the Greek Islands in the off season (and house sitting in the UK and France in the summer)? But of course this is your journey not mine. All the best.

It’s a coincidence that the first time I discovered your channel was 4 1/2 months ago when I was in the Dallas airport getting ready to fly to London to start our grand adventure! Now I am standing in the line at security at the Paris airport getting ready to board a flight back to Dallas! I am watching your video during my time standing in this extremely long queue! What a surprising coincidence that your father‘s funeral was scheduled the same day as the queens! Good luck with all of the many things you will be handling in the coming days. Again, so sorry for your loss😪 But to answer your question....my favourite part of travelling is the planning. Even if our plans change 100 times as we travel, I am most excited during the planning stage. During this time the world is wide open to us and it's so exciting!!! We live full time in our RV and have done so for 3 years. Like you we have sold everything and just travel full time. In that time we have gone from a massive 5th wheel trailer to a 21ft travel trailer. Change is the best part of life! Embrace it and I can't wait to see where your travels take you guys to next! I'm sorry your plans got derailed. Strikes me that it seems as hard to sell a whole house full of stuff as it is to part with a new blender and workout mats. Hi Sarah and Neil, my heart goes out to you as your world gets turned upside down...as one who has been living in other nations and travelling for decades I understand your heart and I also understand the pain - its a process - life is not predictable its what we do when things don't go according to our plan...it seems you have all in hand and are taking each step of the journey with caution - thats all one can do ...it does not define you... As always I love your videos cause of your transparency, don't loose that... it is who you both are and I, for one value that.. So you both are probably in the UK right now... manic on the queens funeral, let it not take away your reason for return, its just coincide re your father's funeral on the same day. You both have a journey to travel right now, travel it well, re-evaluate, do what you have to as far as logistics and, get back on that road the dream you have been planning for what has been I imagine a long time.....Go well, take care and know for one. I will be waiting patiently for your posts when you are ready...don't forget your purpose...and your dream...

I stumbled across your channel- very happy I did. My husband and I are in our mid to late 50's, from western Canada - God Bless the Queen. We can really relate to your videos. Selling off personal and commercial properties, parents of young adult children, aging parents, covid and the list goes on and on as we try to start phase 2 of our life in Central America. I have always called our issues "Problems", I really like your phrasing of "Complications" instead! Our long term plan is to travel the world with no home base.

However the only words of real substance I can give you is - Our heartfelt condolences to you and Sarah on your loss. Now is the time for close family and friends and it seems that your are heading straight for the place you need to be. Home may be wherever you live, but family is always back to the place you started from. We are also currently working on the loss of my father-in-law and all the legal stuff that accompanies that. I hope that all goes well for you as you move into this new season of life and all the goodness that is yet to come. I think, if I were in your situation, I would be saddened, of course, by the death of my father. I think I would also be sad about having to change the plans I had made for the year. However, that sadness would also have some hope shining through. After all the challenges back in the UK are handled, there would be the excitement of putting pen to paper again to plan out future travel adventures. Thankfully you have the flexibility to do what’s necessary and to help your family members. I sure they will appreciate your help. Hi Neil & Sarah, I stumbled across your videos by accident a some time ago and think you are both absolutely brilliant (you're our inspiration!). Life events sometimes hit you totally left field and that was the case for me last year and I'm still trying to sort out estate matters due to unexpected complications with other family members. We've no longer got any parents left and although we are still working (in our 50s), we have recently become empty nesters and are so looking forward to our new next phase of life. Condolences to you both at this very difficult and sad time, but like everything you will get through it together and come out at the other side. x

So sorry to learn of your dad's passing. As someone that is living nomadically with elderly parents (90 and 93), I understand the guilt we feel. Your words have lifted some of the guilt and I'll hold on to the fact that I'm free to help out family for as long as is need family. Inside I knew that but your words reminded me of that fact. Welcome back to the UK. I hope you are being comforted by your family and friends - it's great that you were able to return "home". Tomorrow you will be in my thoughts - it will be one of the saddest days. I felt your emotion these last videos. I can relate somehow with the feeling of guilt (that never leaves) after leaving my country and family many years ago. It was very difficult not being able to travel to my dad's funeral because of COVID restrictions. It will get better with time as you accept your choices and life.

My heart goes out to you having to make difficult decisions. Change, I think, is and can be very exciting. Fun in the planning! I'd miss leaving your beautiful apartment! I'm in the US but she is my Queen too! A great inspiring woman! I don't think we'll see another like her in my lifetime. I hope you're both safe and comforted with family. We are in Madrid on our nomadic journey. We plan to be here for a year. We have a similar concern as I was the carer for both my parents up until a year ago. Dad has passed and Mom is now closer to my sister so she can take over as carer.. However there is always guilt😢. After 12 years I realized I needed a break from caring for both aging parents and children who now are all out on their own. You will get through this season of your life and perhaps have different priorities as far as travel is concerned once you’re on the other side of everything you are dealing with right now. Best of luck, take life one day at a time and enjoy the ride. PS- we use a service called Traveling Mailbox that gives you an actual physical address not a PO Box.

Another excellent video. Love your beautiful apartment and apartment building. The cost is astoundingly cheap. It would cost 10x that in California. I can understand your sadness in leaving. While I’ve not experienced what you’re going through, I hope I deal with unexpected and unpleasant surprises with the same grace and dignity as you two. All will become more clear as time goes on and you figure out the challenges facing you. However your channel evolves, I’ll be following your journey because I like you two a lot and I care.

Wishing you both our very best today for Neil’s father’s funeral. We hope being with family will offer some peace. Dealing with all the things that come after is daunting and can be exhausting. Our only advice (after doing this 4 times - three while living overseas) is to be kind to and patient with yourselves as you juggle it all. It’s natural to want to push to get it all done as quickly as possible, and yet only a few things will go as you expect. Sending you both big hugs from San Miguel!

One of the lessons I learned from being on the road is nothing is forever. After my parents died, I thought I'd travel and never return to the US. But I ran out of money after 5 yrs and had to come back to work/save until I could take my pension. I used that time to start my business, pay off all debt and learn how to manage finances. Now I'm 6 months from leaving and much better prepared for the next step. It all happens for a reason, so do what you need to do & look forward to your future together.

Just remember, the clock restarts when you get back to Thailand. I have the same issues father die, no resident address for uk. Dual citizenship of UK and Australia. Bank accounts in UK and Australia, all so much fun to deal with lol. Stay safe guy’s.

You have alot to sort out, and decisions to make. I pray you'll have the physical and emotional strength to get through it all. I lived in the UK for 20 years and yes it is a burden having a permanent postal address. I used a box at a mailbox facility and put Unit as a substitute for Box. You may not get away with it now because the area code will come up with mailbox company when a business, bank etc keys it in. Worth a try. Manaaki te Atua 💞

Hi Neil & Sara, you asked for opinions so here goes, we were in Finland when my mother in law passed, big difference for us tho she was 95 and had said to us not to return if anything happened while we were away… we were away 6 mths doing a variety of housesits where you commit to people, incidentally we had just finished 1 in Doi Saket so enjoyed seeing the mall again bought back memories. We had already prepared the financial side of my mother in laws estate, as she was in a rest home and her apartment sold, so was a lot easier for us, we had a memorial service when we returned 3 months later. So I feel your pain, but do stay positive and keep up your travels, it really is the best way to spend your retirement and in Thailand everything is so cheap, you are not worrying about paying the winter energy bills like so many at the moment. The apartment looks great, hopefully you can get back to where you left off with a lighter heart.. Take care N&S thinking of you both from 2 Kiwi’s in NZ 🇳🇿

I think you have a great approach here. Go home and figure things out then move on to what's next. You have that flexibility so you might as well take advantage of it. You can always go back to Thailand if that is where your journey takes you. I can't help with the majority of your complications other then to say I wish you the best of luck in sorting everything out. The one constant in life is change and I think you have a great approach in dealing with that.

So many other great comments, I am not sure I can say much different. We have lost 3 of 4 parents so we understand many of the feelings so give yourself space to work through those feelings and deal with the organizational paperwork that follows. It’s at these moments that having each other is so important and, as the Gottman Institute, recommends do a lot of “turning towards.”

Sadly this happens to us all, losing loved ones. Take a year out, it will take that long to sell property etc. Its not a great time to travel with a recession around the corner.

Quite a lot of info in this vlog. Very informative as always. It’s a shame you have to leave so soon but like you said, that blank piece of paper makes it all worth while. Not sure I could afford to fill in those pieces of paper in a UK pub anymore though. 😬 it’s going to be a shock to the system. I hear what you’re saying with having to use an address as a “home” in the UK. It is a factor. I use my girlfriends address but she will be joining me in 3 years and then we will be back to square one. The whole tax thing as well is a factor and just another thing to deal with. I own a couple of rental properties so I have to do the same stuff with an accountant. Like they say though, tax is a nice problem to have. I hope you get all your admin sorted whilst you’re in the UK and you get that new lease of life when you fill in those blank pieces of paper. By the way Neil, you don’t look a day over 54 😂

Personally, I would sort everything out in the UK ASAP and return to Chiang Mai. Your Dad would want you to do that and live your life as you have planned it. You will have drawn 8 boxes on a piece of paper and 6 or 6.5 will be coloured in which means you have very little time. Don't waste it, you've done the hard part. Get back on it. I'm six years older and have to wait which I regret. Come back and do what you have to do but the first thing is to buy your tickets back.

We still enjoy the convenience and ease of living in the US, but that does not mean geo arbitrage does not work here. We moved from California to Florida in 2016 and our costs went down by 30%.

Wow, that was quite the video. I’ve always appreciated how you include us in your lives, the good and the sad. As a fellow ex-Pat Brit, I’ve certainly appreciated the perspective and some of the humour. This one clearly was tough for you both. All those plans needing to be changed, so soon after having started to build a life in Chiangmai. I hope it wasn’t too expensive, though I’m sure that’s the least of your worries, considering the sad circumstances surrounding your need to return and these complications you now need to deal with. We’re in London (and thereabouts) the first two weeks in October, if you’re also in the area please reach out of Facebook, we’d love to buy you a pint (or two). I hope your travels home weren’t too stressful.
