Hey gang, I wanted to spend a few minutes and give you guy my 2 cents about what it takes to go full time in lawn care. I get this question a lot, and realistically there's so many different ways you can answer it. Side note, anything I talk about here is purely a suggestion, and just based off my opinions and experience.
I wanted to really emphasize that going full time as an entrepreneur takes a lot of hard work. And quite honestly, more work than most folks even expect. I wanted to give you guys just a snap shot and perspective on what it may take, outside of just the numbers of the business. Being an entrepreneur is more than just an EIN and a piece of paper, saying you own a business. There is a mentality behind it, and a what ever it takes attitude to provide for yourself and not be dependent on someone else. Enjoy.

I completely respect that notion. I work 40+ a week and work my business on the weekends and after work. If you really want that ownership that self enterprise you have to want, youhave to need desire that freedom more than you want to breath. I don't want comfortability I want freedom and that's means working everyday every second.

I’m on the verge of starting a business right now. There’s talks within the company I work for now, that a client that I care for, is going to be pulling out three, major paying properties from our services. No particular reason, they just want to start managing the property themselves... long story short, I am in the crosshairs of being layed off. I have three years experience in landscaping from 2011-2014 so I will be rusty but I didn’t mind the work and actually enjoyed hitting 17-18 lawns a day. But first, while I still have this job, I will start doing lawns over the weekend. I just landed my first 1k mulch job and I haven’t even started doing lawns yet. Your’s and Keith’s content is the nudge I need. Wish me luck and thank you for all the awesome content you make!

FYI, I know I’m a little late in the spring season but I haven’t hit lawns yet because I’ve been budgeting and saving money to buy my equipment. So far I have my weed eater (echo pas225vp), blower (stihl br450 c-ef), gas cans, fuel mix, string. The free mower (residential troybilt recycler) I got needs to be serviced. It was free so I won’t be picky yet. I loved the toro commercial 21” when I was doing lawns with that company. No trailer yet, just suv.

My husband went full time 5 years ago while I still worked in town. Then I have been full time 3 years this April. We love it. Some weeks maybe 7 days work but we love it and no regrets. Thanks for the awesome video

Lovin the tough love talk Brian. I'm all in full-time this year. I'm solo at this point, but account acquisition has me already planning for expansion. It's a different world when your everyday grind becomes your own. Full disclosure: I'm 54 years old and just now taking this on. We are comfortable financially, which finally allowed me to pull the trigger. I understand I've got a short window to get this growing into what I am hoping. Gonna kill it as long as i can though. I just found you a few weeks ago, and appreciate your straight forward info. Throw up some snow removal videos, so we don't get yelled at for watching lawn stuff this time of year lol.

@@4BanginYJ Same accounts as last year, minus a couple that either moved or were too far away to be profitable. I still have the day job, business slowed down. I work fewer hours, so I had lawncare time, but not enough to add new accounts. Also, I went through a divorce due to my ex-wife's alcoholism, so all things considered I'm happy to have both jobs and be healthy & free of 120lbs of evil & stress. Next season is looking better to say the least.

I started cutting when I was 8 at my parents house then I loved it so much I started when I was 12 push mowing my neighbors then when I was 14 bought my first rider tractor then was able to drive it around and get more clients. when I turned 16 and i got a truck I was able to go anywhere when I turned 18 I went pro got my first trailer and zero turn. now 9 years later still growing every year. there's ups and downs but just stay positive. its hard work its not easy. snow removal is a great add on I don't do much but I do. I have a older 98 Chevy 2500hd with a western plow it works great. sorry for my story. great video Brian always helping everyone and getting the point to them

I have been cutting commercially now since 2012 and it was always a very lucrative extra income source but I never thought it would be a full time option . Now after a couple years of making more money in one third the time and some motivation by a less than desirable new boss I made the decision to go full time. I wish I would have done so many years ago. It is day to day at my job now as I am losing money still going to a job I really don't feel like being at. A couple things left to "figure out" and I am done. I hate having to turn down or give yards to friends that I could be doing if I did not have to go to work. That is about to end soon. No one is going to give it you and it is not going to just happen. If you are willing to get out there and get it the sky is the limit when it comes to lawn care. Your videos are great keep up the good work and I wish you the best of luck in your business.

I love your and Keith's videos. In my situation I got tired of getting screwed on pay working for other people while they was getting fat checks. So after 12 years of it, I finally threw all my chips in got a reliable truck, new trailer, mower and equipment. Won't lie I was scared shitless, but did a few jobs in my grandparents neighborhood, next thing you know by word of mouth started getting more customer's. Just started 2 months ago, the only thing I struggle with is pricing, gotta get the hang of it. So I don't cut myself at my knees. I appreciate it for all the advice brother.

Great video man....I was a supervisor for a major lawn company and was laid off..they said we will call you in the spring...no way. Lol...I'm on my own by myself have a great lawn company,winter time I had pressure washed,multched,pavers,dropping trees,irrigation repairs anything to make ends meet..I have well exceeded my expectations and it happened quick...you have to work your ass off and know your numbers and most important..attention to detail..clients will notice that....you will suceed!!..

when I decided to go full time I first found a caretaker job for a small apartment block (and An established property management company). A little cleaning and a few contactor calls pet month gives me free rent, and I make direct internal contacts when I'm ready to go commercial. this also helps to pad the financial risk. PLUS an unintended benefit, 2 of my best paying client are actually former tenants who moved into homes and knew me and my services

There are alot of variables with when to go full time. I was 23 when I started with no commitments and a part time job. I eased my way into it and as I got older and busier I had to decided to go full time or give it up because I ran out of time on the side. I decided to go full time and it cost me short term but now I earn more than if i worked a regular unqualified job. P.s I do have some qualifications. The best part with a business is that I get heaps of tax breaks and though I bust my guts in summer and Autumn, the rest of the year is pretty cruisey, winter is a cake walk, thats how I like it for physical recovery reasons. I think the big mistake people make is that they go full time when they have kids, a mortgage, car loans ect, and they find it hard to make ends meet. Start small and pay cash for your equipment. Its not an expensive business to get into really. Either that or go big, get into debt with larger machines, and try to win contracts. Depends on where your at in life I guess.

I still work full time i just pay a manager salary year round and put a team around him. I cud quit job but i always say i will do both until i cant then i quit job. We work 6-9 5 days a week plus landscape tons of clients. Do leaves trees and xmas light in winter. U can knock down 25-50k doin lights too. Its hard for me to quit cause i make 35 a hr at my job job lol.

You can easily make $70+ an hour in your lawn Care business so you have to consider how much opportunities your missing out on while working your regular job. I make $30 an hour at my morning job part time, but my lawn care I make between $70-$100 hourly depending on what type of work I'm doing. I'm also wondering what more I. My business opportunities I'm I missing out on because I'm obligated to the "regular job". Could possibly grow it so much more if I left.

Yep, I agree, do it now it will give you time to make it grow and make more money. I started up on my own in 1995 after I lost my dad, we used to do gardens together for many years before in private homes using their gear. His father and fathers' father were also in the same line of business, (making the latter my great grandfather, he worked in the grounds of Sandrinham Palace, norfolk in UK). But I Decided to do things a little differently and take my gear with me, I much prefer using my own tools. One reason for example happened just last week, I used a customers' garden broom propped in a corner to sweep up and when I was called to the door as I was loading up was asked if I had put her broom back after using it! I have my initials on all my tools for such events as I was once accused of taking a wheelbarrow I had used to put weeds into along with my two whilst landscaping. I have never had anyone complain though when I have cleared up after their cats or dogs! And yes, extra charges apply!

for the first three years I drove a semi truck local at night maybe good money and then landscaped in the daytime and used all the money from the lawn care landscape and put it right back in the business so had no payments or debt

Brian you are true to the word god bless. Now with me I love my job safelite auto glass well I'm helping people with that I also started my lawn care business last year . I love it owning my business. But for me it's though leaving the safety of others in others people heads when I install the windshield I feel that the customer is my family and I'm the one that is a hero keeping them safe. I truly believe that I can make more money leaving but I'm at a crossroad. It's like a cop saying do I stop being a hero aka a cop cause I can make more money mowing plowing and more is the money worth it

Great vid! I'm hoping to keep my warehouse job through this winter and keep running my O/O carpet cleaning biz part time. I'm going to quit the job in February and start marketing hard to start my own lawn care biz. At only $600 a week gross it shouldn't be hard to match what I make at the job. My minimum will be $40 per cut weekly ($50 biweekly) so I'll only need to start out with about fifteen yards, which shouldn't be hard to get pretty quickly by April. I'll use every day I'm not mowing to market the biz. I'm kicking myself for not doing it fifteen years ago, but better late than never!

I did mines In a similar way . I worked for a landscaping company that my dad co-owns for 5 years and since the hours were good and allowed me to be out by 11 am - 1:30 latest. It gave me the chance to do lawn care after work hours and start my own business till today . Till today I work my “ regular “ job and 3 days a week I do lawn care on the side . And keep growing it everyday grinding it out day in an day out . Soon to have someone work it and still make enough profit after all expenses are taken care of .

When i had my landscape business in the winter i drove a school bus some guys i know deliver oil i the winter. Like you said figure it out. Things worked out where i found myself selling my last accounts and getting out. I would like to get back in. Like you said Brian figure out your expenses and go do whatever you need to.

I started as a side gig 15 years ago 3 years into I told my wife I was done with working for someone else and jumped in full time. The first year almost broke me but I kept going I was doing it all myself until this year I broke my ankle this spring and had to hire a guy that was one of the best thing that happened to me now we get tons done. I've taken on extra work to pay him working out great as for winter I don't have to work but I can't not work so I work as a fire mechanic with my volunteer department

Me personally im going to do Lawn Care full time when my wife is done with College. She graduates in 2020. I will however slowly start it part time soon. Only reason I haven't done it full-time yet is we live off my income only. So at the moment i think its the best choice for me. But everyday I watch your channel and many others. Always getting great advice from the Lawn Care community.

I make $350 a week at my JOB. Last year I tested the waters for a day and made a FB post in a couple groups titled “Lawn Mowing”. I got 4 replies all for overgrown small properties. That day alone using a trimmer, hand blower, a push mower and a truck I borrowed from a friend, I made $240 and I was only working from 10AM-4PM. Almost died from the heat but the money got made and I was happy, customers were happy, and the satisfaction of making that money from my work is priceless. I stand behind a customer service desk in retail for 9 hours a day and don’t even make $100 a day after tax. What I can say is thanks to you Brian and a few other channels I am 100% committed to starting my business and trashing my non rewarding job of being fought with over coupons. Getting the mower and trailer soon, I have 1,000 fliers to pass out, fresh business cards made, and now it’s on. Dropping to part time at my job in April and I’m taking lawn care by the horns full force in hops of getting 100% out of my job. Still trying to learn other ways outside of fliers to get new clients. Thanks for your inspiration man!

Hey, man, I'm doing the same. Retail is soul-crushing and boring as hell. Other than flyers and cards, try social media, get signs made for your van/truck, get sidewalk signs printed and stick them in high traffic areas or entry to high quality housing areas - like those that Keith Kalfas has. I will be starting a lawn care business this upcoming spring after doing lawn Care on the side for the past four years with a push mower. This summer I got a job at a big residential/commercial company just to get a better look at the business and see how a big company does things.

As an owner, You have to pay yourself first from gross income/revenue like an employee. This is included with your expenses. What is left over is "profit". Profit and income are not the same thing

I was a UPS driver and was terminated twice because they'd want me to go in early all the time and for a while I was willing to do it.... I then started doing landscaping two years ago in the summer and saw the potential in this. I was terminated in winter two years ago during winter and I had no landscaping or UPS to rely on and was called back. I did go back and saved up like crazy and 2017 I started focusing on my business and started learning more and more about the business. I am now going full time with landscaping and doing snow removal too. This 2018 I will focus on going full time because I have confidence in my work. I've seen most lawn care videos and have learned a lot from all of you guys. We live in a world where learning to do anything is at a click of a button.

I started last season full time after been working as a lineman for 14 years making around $80k working 4 days a week and is hard to leave the comfort zone but if you work hard you will see light at the end

My opinion is when u make 10% more in lawn then in ur job then switch. Cuz if it's the same u want to think is it worth it, all that extra work to make the same as ur day job..

i did it by working a 3rd shift job and landscaping during the day while my kid was in school id beat the piss out of myself until that one night when the work truck didnt want to start i said ya know... f this im done i was nervous as hell but did it i saw so many extra jobs around properties i could do but didnt have the energy i said quit and go get those extra jobs, i bought a dump truck and started mulch then firewood for the slow period before fall clean ups. I went from a two bedroom shitty apt as a single dad trying to make it and married one of my customers lol we have a home now 2 boys tons of equipment new cars new bikes and a great life just WORK for it!! oh and sleep from 6:30-11:30p drive 374 miles a night then go sweat all day lol

I love the what are you going to do over the winter? like 60k over 35 weeks is the same as 60k over 52 weeks, plus I don't work 52 weeks of the year its real nice to get some down time I always come back real motivated in the spring.

If you never try your never going to be successful. You got to jump both feet and make the commitment. There's no longer excuses. Laziness don't pay bills and It sure in the hell won't make you successful. Hard work and determination pays off. I just quit my job and when in to Landscaping full-time for myself i have 35 accounts and it pays the bill and then some.My small company grows every day hard work, good work ethics pay off now I just got to get the quotes down so I can make a little more money😁 love the channel Brian you have a very successful business and I'm learning from you thanks for the advice bro keep cutting that grass and making that cash brother

when to quit your job its when profit what you make at your job. another idea its get a partime night job that's what I do work full time in my landscaping partime at night then when I feel secure enough I'll quit and all in.
