Interesting to see used as a reference to old fashion. Growing up in New England, “Old Money” referred to aristocratic families whose wealth came from some old family fortune. Families like the McCormicks and the DuPonts immediately spring to mind.

Strictly speaking "Old Money" is a family fortune at least three generations old. As far as style, it's not just classic. It's understated, exclusive, socially coded WASP style from the NE USA.

The thing about old money is that you likely wouldn't notice old money people on the street. They appreciate wealth, but do not like to advertise it. Understated quality clothes, kept and worn for years, is a hallmark of old money. Perhaps it is easier to define it by what it is not: New money. New money people are going to make sure you know they have it. If someone looks like a million bucks, they almost certainly are not old money.

I grew up in very rural Scotland and to me "old money" doesn't mean "classic style", it's the old wealthy families, gentry, minor aristocracy etc as opposed to the nouveau riche. You could easily spot someone who was "old money" at a glance vs nouveau riche but not because they wore classic style. Rather they looked pretty disheveled and didn't seem to care. They didn't care because they didn't need to, they didn't need to prove anything and they didn't care about impressing you. They would go and stock up on expensive clothes each year and wear them till they were quite literally rotting and falling off them. It was the new money who cared more about appearances and were anxious to look the part & impress. People in my family ranged from pretty extreme poverty to lower middle class and I know they were better dressed & more in line with the Gentleman's Gazette's principles than the "old money" types

Most people who refer to their aesthetic as "old money" are basically poor people trying to look like rich people trying to look like poor people, which doesn't always mean classic style

In Germany old money means that wealth was handed over since various generations within one family. They are wealthy now and they were wealthy generations back. Opposite to new money, the one created wealthy by themselves in their own lifespan, greetings from Berlin Germany 🇩🇪

Without really knowing, I have to agree that the term connotes a sense of inherited wealth, rather than "new" money, meaning the fortune was made recently and the term nouveau riche'.To me, nouveau riche' would apply to for instance, a very middle class family or individual that recently came into a lot of money, as depicted in the old '50's TV series "The Millionaire", or comically portrayed in "The Beverly Hillbillies". I always thought Old money literally meant your past relatives were rich and passed the wealth down, the opposite to Nouveau riche.

I’m a lover of all things vintage fashion wise and recently as of the last 24 hours found that the term “old money” has been used to refer to the aesthetic which is really unfortunate considering most of these styles are horribly inaccurate for the time periods they claim to reflect and untrue as most people during these times regardless of socioeconomic status dressed in these so called “old money” styles.

Sadly not true generally across the anglophonic space. Old money and the inverse new money are behavioural concepts. Old money means that money existed before one earned it and should be regarded with historicism: ie it came from someone else and the choice to guard it for oneself is one’s choice to enrich oneself in that manner. New money says it is all new, i made it; I did not earn it, it came from my efforts and noone else and therefore is wholly “one’s own creation”. Applying these different philosophies to a personal set of life decisions is important over time. At the extremes it become “renew (sewing, darning, etc; or buy new” and that set of decisions dictate a lot for one’s life, style and long term enrichment methods.

Nah, Old Money simply means dynastic business and corporations that were founded back in the day where trade -- national and international -- was carried out using gold, there by also being companies that has been inherited by the generations that has come after the founder.

That’s not old money. Old money is the inherited wealth of a traditional upper class family, wealth that they haven’t made themselves. The upper class might have had a specific style that could apply to what you’re talking about but it’s not the definition of the word and it’s definitely not anything recent.
