I gotta be honest. I’m waiting for the Silmarillion explained series all day every day. The content is still awesome though bro! Keep up the good work! I’m sorry that I can’t really duck with your live streams and podcasts. I live in Africa so most of the time when you’re doing those I can’t really find the time. Like I said keep up the good work! I can see that this channel is growing and it’s fucking dope!

I’m glad you cited authority for the “browner of skin” Harfoots given all the drama about diversity in the new ROP show

@@ointment9If people lost their minds over 2 or 3 black characters that barely has any film 🎥 time imagine how they would react if they made them all black.

Excellent video! The combination of maps, art work and video is great. I enjoyed the insights into the lore and the link to RoP . Thanks.

One thing I like about Gandalf(If it truly is him of course) Meeting the Harfoot hobbits first is that his first impression of middle earth came from one of the most humble down to earth races that existed. Rather than being found by a royal family and taught he was superior to lesser races his first few days was learning to simply survive care for your loved ones and enjoy life whenever possible.

Wonderful video! I really liked your use of the maps. Question: I get the impression from both the books and the adaptations that hobbits are afraid of men. Are there any insights into why? I can speculate, of course, but I am curious if Tolkien gives us anything specific. Thank you!

I agree, great video and references to maps. I’m not sure if Hobbits were really afraid of “The Big Folk” as they’re being depicted in RoP. Hobbits lived and worked side by side with Men and Dwarves in Bree for generations. I think Hobbits in The Shire just kept to themselves and thought anyone who wasn’t a Hobbit just strange and not part of their community.

I think during the period that the books are primarily set in, the Hobbits had grown more complacent in their wariness of Men, due to the fact that they are a long way from the influence of Mordor and, more importantly, under the protection of the Dúnedain rangers -- though this was unknown to the vast majority of them, it created a false sense of security. Men can be stupid, wicked and corruptible, and they're physically bigger and stronger than halflings, so it makes sense for them to avoid interactions. But the above poster is also correct that there's an element of parochialism to their culture which excludes outsiders. And even extends to other Hobbits of The Shire, from different Hobbit communities, at a more local level; think of how the Hobbiton locals refer to the Bucklanders as "queer" in the early chapters to The Lord of the Rings.

@@TheHeroRises The Men of Bree were shorter than normal and had some Hobbit like qualities. Was the only town that the Hobbits traveled to where the big folk lived. Makes you think.

All great points. Dwarves are bigger than Hobbits and were involved in many wars like Men and Elves yet there was still interaction with them. There are the 3 breeds of Hobbits that each have their own behavioral and cultural quirks but most have all interbred that it’s just individual proclivities of a Hobbit - like Bilbo’s Took side taking over and wanting an adventure or his Baggins side wanting to just stay home and have plain Hobbit Sense. Lol. The Professor was basing The Shire on English villages of his time with all their attitudes to those within and without the community. That being said, even the different communities of Men were weary of each other. Breelanders and the Rangers. Rohan and Dunlendings.

Delayed commenting, apologies. wasn't feeling well last week. One thing I've been curious about since early on. is it possible that the Stoors and Fallohides might be some harfoots that fell behind/were abandoned in migration. Now that I think of it, Fall O(r) Hide? There's something I love about Sam being from the Harfoots. Once again your maps are just so SO helpful for my stupid brain. My current thinking is that it's Nori, poppy and Co who basically go: migration is great, but there are some flaws here (keep up or be left behind) ... why not try this finding one place to hide out a go? Or at least, can we only change places once. ALso, yes, still waiting on entwives.

Finally a video not nitpicking the show apart. I enjoyed the rings of power. Neck beards who seem to care a lot about black elfs and hobbits. Some of these fanatics are about to start chanting "you will not replace us" marching with Tolkien tiki torches.

They are the race that apparently got eaten by wolves cause the Hobbits 0f Tolkien have nothing in common with them.

I don’t really get the issue with that, the values of the simple pleasures and shit are still prevalent in the Harfoots but they live a more nomadic life, it’s like comparing cave men to medieval men of corse there’s gonna be substantial differences, identical peoples throughout history would honestly shitty world building

Harfoots are a disgrace. Just like the rest of the show. No reason to think of this silly stuff as anything but poor fanfiction.
