Elias Pettersson is an all world talent, there is no doubt about that. Fans in Vancouver have seen him dominate games on both ends of the ice. One of his greatest strengths is his mind, but sometimes your mind can be your greatest weakness. Nathan MacKinnon is one such player who has conquered his mind to become one of the leagues best players. How did he do it, and what can Elias Pettersson learn from him? These are the topics I explore in today's video!

I really hope last night was a true turning point for him. Our fans backing him up during a slump is definitely good to see (usually Nucks fans are pretty rough on players who slump), and I hope he'll realize his own self worth and how good of a player he can be. I always believe in him and I'm excited to see him grow the next 8 years!

It seems like depression. But ive seen flashes of brilliance from him that are next level, I hope he finds his way.

Seriously, ever since he was drafted I noticed his hockey sense off the charts , crazy shot, two way ability. The one thing holding him back from being a MacKinnon , Matthews, McDavid type of first line centre is his skating. His stride does not pass the eye test for me. He gets it done but not to the degree of those 3 and a few others. He really needs to work on balance, edge work and just power skating in general.

Great video! It was really good seeing him have a bit more spark with the crowd chanting for him. It does for all the world look like he’s struggling with depression and on such a stage that would have to be so difficult. With a bit of luck he can get on a hot streak and take some pressure off him for a bit. I’m sure a lot of fans watching who’ve experienced clinical depression and/or similar issues see this and his previous dip and have a lot of empathy for the guy. The Canucks (and any organisation) for sure can support with getting some mental health assistance in the right place, not just for him either. Petey’s a fantastic player, really hoping all this doesn’t eat him up any longer.

Yet he made the play for series clinching goal against Preds. He won the faceoff for late tying goal in game 4 and he made yet another play for game winning goal in game 5. I am not worried at all. He will be fine

I feel like the media has not done him any favours this post season either. It’s hard to have a short memory and keep a positive mindset when you’re frequently being reminded of and asked about underperforming. Whatever he did before game 5 though certainly seemed to work!!

Excellent analysis! Hopefully he has turned a corner, if he has then the Canucks are in great shape

Strength training - both mind and body would definitely help. There are times during the playoffs when Petterson has looked like a boy playing among men the way he gets pushed around and knocked aside by opposing players.

Nux got fleeced with his contract. That's Sundin money. Not even the sedins were paid that much at the height of their career. I couldn't believe it when I first learned of it. I thought he's solid depth. I didn't realize they were going all in on him carrying the team...

@@bananian Yeah, I kind of take issue with today's contracts when a player has a good year and then expects to be paid the sun and the moon. I think this takes away from both the unity and commitment to team. The NHL playoffs quickly show you that team wins out before the individual- no matter what kind of superstar you are. I think when you demand to be paid these big-time exorbitant contracts, it is fully within the rights of fans and the organization to expect big-time play. Petterson signed the contract, now it is his responsibility to play up to the contract or face the scorn of fans.

i'm hoping his education from mackinnon can continue in round 3. i like how the canucks match up to colorado even though they didn't get a win against them this year.....so far.

Pettersson has been rumoured to have a wrist injury that has plagued him for half the season. This makes sense given the way his stats have plummeted after an incredible start to the season. His remarkable shot has disappeared. For a player who’s shot, stick handling and passing are his elite. strengths, that’s a huge problem. One does not simply wish them away with a certain mindset. I don’t know what he has been doing to manage this issue over the last few months, but suffice it to say it hasn’t helped him very much. When the playoffs are over, only then will people learn what has plagued him. Hopefully his off season rehab can put this behind him.

If he can learn how to dive and have the refs blow him every game, he'll be exactly like Mackinnon

Elias Petterson has none of the skill sets of Nathan MacKinnon. Petterson should just play like the players that share his skill set. Just be a hot dog like Ovechkin and shoot the puck.

He has high functioning depression. He's also not a professional in the sense that he doesn't seem to be working on his weaknesses. There is no improvement when it comes to his skating and overall strength. I think what you see is what you get with Pettersson. A streaky, mercurial 2C who will put up ppg in the regular season and drop down to .5 ppg in the playoffs. He's an excellent complementary forward who will require high end talent on his wings or be relegated to play second fiddle supporting a stud centerman. He will not live up to his contract.

If he knew he had issues, he shouldn't have asked for that much money. He could singlehandedly screw over the team with his cap hit. If he was paid half that, I'd be okay with him struggling.

@bananian Most who suffer from it don't even realize it. His agent takes care of negotiations. The fair market rate for a PPG forward is in the 8-9m range. 6m is a pipe dream.

@@Xyy2387 Inflation is just out of control. It was only a few years ago when Sundin 10 million was the highest paid contract in the NHL.

His strength has improved majorly, you can see that in his hitting game and face-offs. It’s still below league average but I don’t think that’s debatable. The mental side of things is definitely where he can develop because he’s like a Kovalev version of Panarin: he’s one of the best in the game when he’s on, last season proved that, but he hasn’t figured out how to get out of the slumps that happen.
