In this video, I explain what I do as an Environmental Engineer. For all you environmental engineers out there, you may be doing something different, such as designing, despite both of us having the same title. My role at my facility is mostly in compliance rather than design. I've seen some job titles such as Environmental compliance specialists and environmental health and safety engineers do the exact same thing as I do, so the job title itself may be misleading.

Thanks Sofia, I know environmental science seems easier to graduate with, but the comparison between env sci and env eng is totally different. It is much easier to switch around as an env eng and you can get by with just a bachelors. But with env sci, you''ll probably need like a Masters or have a lot more experience to jump around. It really depends on the company and what they make you do. Sometimes, they may want their env eng to have those computer backgrounds. Luckily, my job doesn't.

Hi! Great Video! I wish I had someone explain this to me when I was still in school. :) I’m also surprised at how different my education was to the actual work I do now. I graduated with an env. engr. focusing on energy and learned a lot about renewables and nuclear while in school. But in my current work, I’m more of a consultant for large buildings (coaching building operators on ways to save energy in their O&M processes). It’s a whole sector of the field I never thought of before but it’s really big.

I'm currently still in high school and thinking about pursuing a field in Environmental Engineering. In the video, you stated you are on a military base. Does the field allow/have you travel and how would that work if you were to raise a family. Also, do most people in the field get a phD? In other words, if I didn't get a phD, would that be a big difference In a job interview. Another question if you don't mind, what is a good minor in terms of having Environmental Engineering as my Major? What are some of your regrets with choosing this field? Last question, do you work as a consultant, or a full blown employee working 12 months out of the year? Furthermore, thank you for reading and any help is appreciated. :)
@RandyLy
@RandyLy 4 жыл бұрын
My military base works a bit different from others. I manage three facilities, all scattered apart. My main office is one base but I occasionally have to travel to visit the other sites just to check in. The traveling required typically only takes like one day so it's not impossible to raise a family. My boss a prime example. Most people in the field do NOT get a PhD. You'd typically only get a PhD if you want to teach at a university or do research. Having a PhD might even deter you from getting a job because the employer might see you as being "overqualified" and demanding more pay, so I warn against it. I didn't have a minor during college, but I would say something you enjoy or might want as a back up in case Env Eng doesn't work out. My Chemistry background is a good back up in case I ever want to work in a hospital or work at a pharmaceutical company, for example. I work full time, 12 months a year, with benefits, and all that good stuff.

I’m a community college student about to transfer to a 4 year university to finish my undergrad classes for environmental engineering and was honestly worried that I might end up hating my career choice by being stuck behind a computer screen. I chose this career path because I wanted to make a impact fighting climate change while being active outdoors. Would you say there are good opportunities to work in the field in the list you had during the video? And if you could change to something else in your list other than waste management what would it be?
@RandyLy
@RandyLy 4 жыл бұрын
My lists was the many that encompass environmental compliance, so definitely any and all of them are open opportunities. The bad thing is that you might just see an opening for "air quality specialists" or "waste water engineer" when you've been exposed broadly to everything but they may want someone more specialized. I would like to see what it's like to work in a wastewater treatment plant as an Env Engineer. I don't know what they truly do on a day to day basis.

For enviro engineering do you feel like it satisfied the not being in a “desk job” type situation? When I look up this career I get various answers of people working in an office or on site. Also If you get through enviro engineering can you switch to civil if you do not like the program?

My job is like 70% office and 30% field work. And the field work is just walking from one facility to the next so it's not as glamorous as you'd think. Environmental engineering is a subcategory of Civil engineer at my university. You will be learning what civil engineers learn too except more focused towards environmental stuff/concepts rather than like designing and other core engineering courses. Overall, you can switch but you will still need to catch up on a few things if you do switch.

New College, Oxford is of rather late foundation, hence the name. It was probably founded around the late 14th Century. It has, like other colleges, a large dining hall with big oak beams across the ceiling, yes? These might be two feet square, forty-five feet long. Some five to ten years ago, I am told, some busy entomologist went up into the roof with a penknife and poked at the beams and found that they were filled with beetles. This was reported to the College Council, who met in some dismay, as where would they get beams of that caliber nowadays? One of the Junior Fellows stuck his neck out and suggested that there might be on College lands some oak. These colleges are endowed with pieces of land scattered across the country. So they called in the College Forester, who of course had not been near the College itself for some years, and asked him about oaks. And he pulled his forelock and said, “Well, sirs, we was wonderin’ when you’d be askin’.” Upon further enquiry it was discovered that when the College was founded, a grove of oaks had been planted to replace the beams in the dining hall when they became beetly, because oak beams always become beetly in the end. This plan had been passed down from one Forester to the next for four hundred years. “You don’t cut them oaks. Them’s for the College Hall.” A nice story. That’s the way to run a culture.

@RandyLy
@RandyLy 3 жыл бұрын
1) I use basic math. Nothing too fancy. I learned calculus and advanced differential equations during college, but don't use any of that during actual work. 2) For my job, I don't need to know how to code. During graduate school, we had to know how to use MATLAB for some math classes, but once I graduated; we don't use of that at work. That's just for my position though. 3) Mostly everyone I've talked to, Env Eng is NOT in high demand around the world. The US probably has the most demand, especially in highly affected/polluted areas. Other than that, you may have a hard time finding a job somewhere else. 4) Once I start to plateau and not learn anything new, I don't enjoy it. I like knowing that what I do is helping the environment, but some days can get boring.

Hey Jaqueline, You'll have a lot of math to catch up on if you major in any sort of Engineering field in college. I would recommend majoring in it if you believe this is what you want to do in the future and you'll discover if you can endure all the late nights of studying 😅. My undergrad (UC Riverside) had a program where some students could earn their BS and MS in 5 years if they could hold like a 3.5 GPA or something. I don't know the full details, so you'll have to look into that but it was rare to see an engineering student with that high of a GPA. I just applied to my company and they just so happened to do contracting work with the Air Force. Again, thanks.
@RandyLy
@RandyLy 2 жыл бұрын
It will depend on what your responsibilities are. My environmental engineering experience focuses on compliance while others might be geared towards design and closer to Civil Engineering. That being said, here are my experiences. 1) I manage my program (Hazardous Waste for example) however I like. There are rules you have to follow but I can run it so long as it follows those guidelines. 2) My company encourages ambitious goals and projects, so yes. It's just hard to implement because of costs and practicality. 3) That will depend on your work culture. You may have a micro-managing boss or a coworker who likes things done their way. I've had some experiences with both. 4) Relates to question 2. They like out of the box thinking, and most of mine come from random ideas outside of work that I may want to incorporate inside work. 5) I work for the government so politics do influence our decisions. Every work culture will have its internal office politics, no matter what they say or deny.

1) I am happy with the pay and OK with who I work with (some are old, boring, or just uninteresting). I can proudly say that I am an engineer but that's just an ego thing. 2) I currently make $82,500/yr. It went up from my original offer of $75k back in March 2019. It's a good amount for my age and how much actual work I actually do 3) My work is not stressful so I have some free time during work and when I come home; I do not stress about work. I do not work on the weekends. 4) I am a contractor on a military base. There are some grey areas whether or not I am a government worker because I do get some military perks on the base. I would prefer to work in the city because I know I am a government worker and that is more stable, but I will just get lower pay.

Secondly, people say the math for engineering is rigorous, are the highest maths you took very rigorous. Lastly, in Ap calc did you exceed expectations like did you do exceptionally well. I don’t know how well I will do. Right now I have a 4.0 and I don’t want to take calc for college but end up making a D or C.I was wondering because I’m all my math classes before I’ve done well but according to others engineering is full of math and I was looking for a type of engineering that doesn’t require as much math as others so I thought environmental engineering because it deals with the earth and I find that interesting.
@RandyLy
@RandyLy 3 жыл бұрын
1. It took me the typical 4 years to graduate from undergrad. It took me 1.5 years to graduate with my Masters. 2. You're right in that Env Eng doesn't require that much more math. Chemical engineering has a lot more complicated math that I couldn't handle either. The most difficult math for me was linear algebra. This is NOT the algebra you learned in high school even though it has "algebra" in it. Trust me, it's complicated. 3. I got a 5 on both AP Calc AB and BC. I had a good teacher and undergrad math was also relatively straightforward. A's and B+'s on multivariable calc. It was similar to regular calc so that could be why it wasn't too difficult for me. But our brains could view math differently so just because I had it easy doesn't mean you will.
@ashtonsumpter9811
@ashtonsumpter9811 3 жыл бұрын
Randy Ly Ok thanks. Considering you got both 5 on both calc test the math for this would mostly likely been rigorous. My other option was to go into business.

Hey randy, I am in the process of working on completing my environmental engineering degree and I had a few questions. What did you do to gain experience to get a job? I know many jobs even entry level, want us to have experience. Any advice?
@RandyLy
@RandyLy 4 жыл бұрын
The fact that entry-level jobs want experience frustrates me so much. It just doesn't make sense. That means the only way to gain experience before an entry-level job is during your schooling. Things like getting an internship, joining a club, or working on research projects with a professor are all examples you can do while at school. You definitely want to get out there and have some exposure to something related to the environment, but if you can't get into any of them, any type of people building skills should do the trick. They'll most likely want stories of how you reacted to a situation. Customer service skills are really valuable.

Research topics are generally for academic purposes. Meaning at my current job, we don't do any research. I didn't take the thesis route for my Masters and instead just went through taking all the required classes to graduate. Some of my friends did a thesis and their projects were on wastewater processes. They studied things like which microbes could be better used in the secondary treatment process. One study was on Anammox if you're interested. We mostly kept it to water so I don't have any other ideas in air quality, alternative energy, etc..

However I live in South Africa where an Environmental Engineering degree is not offered. I am busy applying for Uni and I am confused on what to apply for. Should I apply for BSc Environmental Science and then do a masters in Clean Energy/ Engineering. Or should I apply for an Engineering degree such as Civil or Chemical? What would you recommend for me to be able to reach my goal?

I can't say anyone field because it really depends on your area. For example, here in California, air quality is pretty bad with LA smog, but air quality may not be so bad in another state where there aren't any mountains trapping the particulates. Check your region and see what the market is looking for. Maybe solid waste is an issue in your country.

Depending on your location, it can be difficult. Some countries and US states don't take the environment as serious, so there aren't that many job openings for environmental engineers. The job opportunities will vary greatly depending on your location. Some countries and states are more serious about the environment than others. I’ve had some international classmates who graduated with a Masters degree with me and about half were able to find a job in this field, while the other half struggled. I had the same response from people saying it won't be a stable job in the future and that I should just go into healthcare. The future market is unpredictable but I chose this field because I enjoyed it no matter the outcome and job perspective. I do feel in the future this will be a more demanding job because, as you can see the urgency with the pandemic, there may eventually be an urgency with the climate if people believe in science. Getting a higher degree won't guarantee any job and I do not want you to believe that getting a PhD will give you that, especially if you'll have to study for 4+ more years and suffer if you don't enjoy it. Some classmates I know were doing the same just prolong their decision and some kept through while others switched. I would say find something you actually enjoy on the side while you continue your Masters. If you want to try finances or coding, try that during your free time (lots of free videos and programs online). You will have to put in the effort to do that during your free time but if you don't; you will be wasting years pursuing something you don't enjoy for a job that isn't guaranteed.

Hi Lulu, I feel that getting a Master's degree isn't always necessary, depending on a lot of factors. If you are able to find a job right away and gain experience, it might not be necessary. I've seen some jobs not even give additional raises despite the higher education. My current job didn't care whether or not you have a Master's or a bachelors, so long as you are able to get the tasks done which is probably a downside on my end if I'm looking for higher pay. I am not sure what the demand is in Mexico, but if the tuition for getting a Masters and the increase in demand because you have the higher education is worth it, then I would pursue it. You wouldn't want your efforts in getting a Masters to go to waste. I would keep applying with your current education and limited experience, and if after a certain amount of months you still don't get in, then you pursue Masters

Hi Lucia, I know foreign students coming to the US have it waaay harder than US citizens 😓. I know I am super privileged in that sense. I cannot tell you the best route since I never had to go through that. However, I do have some civil engineer coworkers who came from El Salvador and how they got their position was through connections. They just knew someone working in that company already and they were able to help each other out by giving them referrals and recommending them as soon as a position opened. It sort of defeats the purpose of validating your degree or starting from the bottom if you already have help in that way. My best advice is try to reach out to hiring managers in that company or other people in your field through LinkedIn or email. It just shows you're interested, making an effort to gain experience, and are not just another stack of resumes on their list. Good luck to you!

In the US, you need to graduate with a degree in Environmental engineering or a related field. The position title does not dictate whether you are an engineer or not. You will need to apply to become a Professional Engineer by following the guidelines.

To do environmental engineer we have strong chemistry or without its okay.
@RandyLy

You'll most likely have to take some Chemistry classes during university. Although you don't need to be a professional chemist, you still have to pass those classes.

Randy le I am from India & i have a strong desire to became an enviourmental engineer..... I want to know what qualification are require for it I am currently studying in class 11th
@RandyLy
@RandyLy 4 жыл бұрын
The qualifications are different for each company. I've been rejected to some positions even with my Masters in Env Eng and with my Eng in training certificate. Some positions don't even require any of that and will take just a Bachelors and some experience. It's really a hit or miss and is not guaranteed anything no matter what you have

@RandyLy

You'll have to take the general physics series that your university requires you to take, but I didn't need to take any further advanced physics besides that.

It changed a lot while growing up as a kid. At first, it was a firefighter, doctor, teacher, inventor. Now I am still leaning towards teaching or becoming research scientist in my field.

@RandyLy
@RandyLy Жыл бұрын
Short answer for me, yes. But there are many factors to consider when thinking about grad school like financial costs, whether or not you have the time or commitment to complete it, and the job market. If you can see yourself in management, want to climb the corporate ladder, or see yourself in this field for many years, it's worth it.

You would think so because they have the word "engineer" in the title. But no, that's not what every environmental engineer does. What we do is very broad. Some may work on designing those things, but not all do
