This is such a rollercoaster of suffering and hope. Story 21 really got me with the man who chose to raise his son no matter what.

My Italian ancestors were part of the Mafia. This was during the time of the prohibition. My 2x great grandfather was the number 3 guy in their organization. He owned a grocery store, and often ran numbers inside. One of his sons owned a shoe store. He never worked on a shoe a day in his life. It was all a front for gambling. My grandma’s family often visited New York City, where the Mafia family member lived and operated. She said whenever her family visited, the red carpet was rolled out for them. My Italian family’s last name is DiMauro

I didn't know it was a secret as I knew from when I was a little kid (like maybe 10) but at my grandmother's funeral there were pictures set up of them with my dad as a toddler with them and I let slip that "I thought it happened later than that", to which my brothers (both adults btw), said "what happened" and I causally responded "oh just that Dad was adopted when he was still that little".... Yeah they had no idea dad was adopted.

Second story reminds me of my maternal grandfather. He passed before I was born, so I never met him, but it turns out he was in the CIA. I don't know any of the specifics, but my mom, aunt, and uncle (his kids) didn't learn about it until years later, and were even given a plaque commemorating his service. Bonus points: I've seen photos of him in his latter years, and he bears a striking resemblance to 007 himself, Sean Connery.

My family has a fairly long history of substance trafficking. Almost as if it's a tradition. Starting with alcohol in the 20s and 30s all the way up until the earlier '00s when my late step father was trafficking meth.

Maternal grandma is a complete nut case. When I was a kid, she was involved in a whole thing where my grandpa accused her of hiding his camera while she defended herself that she never did so and that other family members that were visiting at that time stole it. Made a lot of noise in the family. At some point, he finds it, after buying a new one. I got the old one for my birthday without knowing it was the old one. One day, we go visit grandma. Naturally, my mom and her end up arguing. The next morning, while my mom is still asleep, she pulls my sister and I to the kitchen table and in a sort of conspiracy tone tells us "I got a secret for you, kids. It's me that hid grandpa's camera". I just rolled my eyes

Wow, these are some crazy stories. Story 8 sounds like what happened with a friend. She knew the man who raised her and her siblings wasn’t her biological father but didn’t think much else of it as he was a drunkard who couldn’t keep it in his pants. On her deathbed her mother confessed to have had an affair with a man from Italy and had kept in touch with him, giving all the details on friend her twin sister’s lives. When friend went to meet him he took her in like she was visiting from having gone off to school and was home for a holiday. Even his wife accepted her as just another grown daughter she had and loved. Kinda sad when you think of what could have been if her mom’s husband wasn’t such an abusive neglectful prick.

Well, nice that they found a home for the baby anyway. Not that the aunt refused to take in the baby due to racism.

The reason why my mother was abandoned to my Great Grandmother. It was because my grandfather's mother insisted she was an affair baby and my grandfather believes it. In the end it turns out she wasn't, as my mother has to be treated several times with anger issues and OCD, something my grandfather has too, since the house they live in was always spotless. Now days ... that house reeks in grease, humidity and other odd smells, while looks a hoarding. Need to said, my grandma and my 3rd aunt is still lives there. Also it turns out my grandfather wrote a letter regretting that he always favorite my aunts over my mother and never listen to her since the relationship was already strained. He was proud of her and was proud of me been his 1st grandson and the way i always had time with me, and that he regrets also favoriting my cousin (who i don't mind since we grew like brothers), since i end up been the only one working better of all. He died at 67 as he choke on a piece of sandwich, but it was reveal he was having a coronary too at that moment and die because of that. He died in front of my grandmother, my aunt, her boyfriend and my kid cousin. We also knew the day of the funeral the extend of his influence outside home, since he was retiree law enforcement and nearly 40 years as road inspector, since parade of road inspectors accompanied the caravan to the cemetery. Lots of people went and even the intendent of my city assist that day too. He regret to be an asshole with his family for a long time and wish a lot of things while he still live. But drinks and smoke just killed him inside for a long time. Also the death of my great-grandmother was a huge impact for everyone included him and my mom mostly. Last thing he said was to my grandmother: "You mom said to come with her last night. She looks as i remember her long ago. Weird isn't it?"

I was surprised to learn I have multiple step siblings before me. Two half sisters and two half brothers. don’t want to go into anything about but let’s just say he wasn’t quite of “legal age” in usual standards. and my step siblings are 5-10 years older than me

How do you get a DNA result that your dad is your biological dad, if that dad isn't participating in the test? A father and son getting a DNA test shouldn't be able to verify who the father's father was. You might get a match saying your heritage is a heritage that the grandfather expects from his history, but you need a test on both sides to match them.

There’s higher graded DNA testing through hair and saliva like police would do with discarded items. Or deduction by testing a his mom or other close relatives perhaps.
