Back then people's diets had little to do with choice. It was whatever was available in the area they lived in. Even today it's usually mostly people in first world countries who get to make the decision to exclude certain foods and even that has expectations.

I was actually alive back before we domesticated watermelons. And is a good thing we did. They used to roam the countryside in gangs. Climbing into bins knocking litter around. They'd chase dogs and old people. Watermelons were real shits back then

They simply tasted slightly better than other plants. For example, here in my country there is a plant "Bread n' cheese" (how it got that name is beyond me). Anyway it grows on trees, and the fruit looks much like beans, with a long sack with multiple seeds inside. If memory serves, the sack is soft with a caramel brown colour, and when ripe it splits open revealing the seeds. These seeds are covered with a red and white flesh that is edible. Now currently, there is little meat on the seeds and the taste is bland to slightly bitter, but people still eat them. If it were, that persons began to farm these, I am sure criteria such as seed to fruit ratio, taste and size would produce tastier and more satisfying fruit... Now I kinda wanna try farming them... I guess other examples would be dunks which have huge seeds, and a bit of meat on them, or sea-grapes which are a bit bitter, both of which are still commonly sold in season. Then also perhaps even tamarind leaves which, unlike the fruit, don't have a strong taste but are still washed and chewed. Just as long as they're slightly good, people won't mind eating, especially back when that was the best you had.

_Max_ Actually, the article you linked says that weird patterns like that were _believed_ to be caused by under or over-watering, but then they discovered it had to do with "improper pollination." Under or over-watering can cause other issues, though.

The "wild" watermelon still exists. It happens when watermelon is either underwatered or overwatered. Even if you cut a watermelon in the middle, you still can see the remnants of the swirl if you look closely. Watermelons haven't changed at all.

The sweet corn we eat off the cob or canned was only bred in the late 19th century. Even the dry field corn we use as cattle feed or to make ethanol was only bred a few decades earlier. Before that corn was very hard with a thick hull. We now call this variety flint corn, and the only types we often see are the multicolored "Indian corn" used for decoration, or popcorn. In order to eat whole kernels of flint corn the hulls had to be softened with alkali such as lye or slaked lye. This is called nixtamalization, and its product is hominy, from which also can be made grits or masa.

Someone needs to tell the veggies in my garden that they're supposed to be the domestic variety. Especially the corn, kernels growing amongst the other tassel flowers was unexpected. And the eggplant, those spikes were very unexpected. The white interior watermelon was still tasty. Why are only two of the carrots resembling orange carrots? Are potatoes supposed to grow fruit?

technically that is still gmos because for example round eggplants is a gene, and we breed them until they got to an oval
@marielaalvarado4793
@marielaalvarado4793 7 жыл бұрын
Blaque but gmos are when you take like a bacterias DNA or some kind of animal and mix it into the fruit, this is impossible in nature. But domestication is different Bc it's not with another animal but rather with its own species. It also happens naturally when the wind blows and the seeds are carried onto another plant.

oh c'mon, here in Indonesia you you can easily find the wild eggplant and wild banana. in here we eat wild egg plant as "lalapan" (raw veges that usually has "sambal" as its condimate), and we use wild banana (pisang batu) leaves as base or cover of many traditional food and its fruit as an item in "rujak bebeg" (mashed unripe fruits salad)😂

I think the wild banana is just a different variety from the banana usually sold internationally, but in Indonesia there are several other banana you can find and the wild banana mentioned are the one we put on special fruits salad called "rujak bebek". This fruits salad is a bunch of fruits being crushed together with some spices, and this particular banana can only be eaten after crushed and has bitter taste.

Traits are based on genes. Any process that changes traits inherently changes (modifies) genes. The method doesn't matter, it's still genetic modification. It can be left to nature (natural selection), controlled by man (GMO), or something in between (selective breeding). Follow the facts, not the fears. ;)
@Pacmau01
@Pacmau01 7 жыл бұрын
Best explanation so far. It's all genetics. Yes. Nature experiments all the time. And those who survive have the best offspring. To remain for generations slightly changing. GMO's try to do this faster. By selecting the specific trait required. Even if it's taken from other species. Wich really doesn't matter, as long as it is carefully isolated. And selective breeding is what has been done for centuries. And what made crops what they are today.

escapegrl1 Frakenfood ≠ GMO GMO is directly modifying the genes of a species. That doesn't mean having that modified produce pesticides/herbicides/fungicides automatically. It could do something as simple as give the plant a different taste, and something as complex as making it a completely different plant! Frakenfood is just having the a flower of a subspecies of a organism, say, a jalapeno pepper, be pollinated by a flower of a bell pepper. *_BOOM!_* A bellapeno!
