Great review. I have a USA-spec 2007 L322 Supercharged. It’s been a fantastic vehicle, and just rolled over 330,000 miles. Original engine & transmission, and it really hasn’t needed much. It helps that it’s super dry here so no rust. Cheers!

Great review, Ben. We have a 2008 HSE V8 with 175,000 miles. The paint and interior still looks great. We did go through a phase at 150K with a few big ticket repairs, but she’s back to her old reliable self now. We just handed her down to our youngest son who just started driving and he is so proud of it. I replaced it with a 2019 Supercharged V8. People often ask me how I like my Range Rover. I tell them all to never get one. They ask why? Are they that bad. My answer is always no. They are so great that once you own one, you’ll always have to have one. Keep up the great work, my friend. We all get so very much from your videos.

I’ve owned my L322 since 2002 , bought new , 20 years of ownership 220k all done by me and I love it now as much as the day I bought it , I service it twice a year change the gearbox oil once a year as I’m on my second gearbox, when things go wrong I have a good man who fixes things for me , but truthfully it doesn’t really give me problems, I drive it to Spain 🇪🇸 every year 1500 miles each way and have done for the last 15 years . I have owned Toyota Landcruisers for over 30 years (first a 4.2 turbo diesel and now a 4.7 V8 petrol with over 200,000 miles on it now) and they have been utterly reliable as well as being luxurious and fully-loaded with all the usual creature comforts. Will find it difficult to justify changing to a Rangerover.

I agree with the statement, I worked as a technician at Toyota for a while and drove most model Landcruisers, very reliable, but they just don't have the feel of a Range Rover.

In the case of JLR products, any list of possible problems is much shorter if you list what go wrong, break down, corrode away, fail to work etc. etc. Beautiful cars which won't break down - as long as you don't drive them! If you do drive them something is almost guaranteed to break down on a regular basis.

These cars still amazing. Last year I finally could buy a RR Sport tdv6 from 2008. Yes with the 2.7 liter "nightmare" engine. I changed EGR valves, oil, filters, timing belt, and some little things. Everybody told me, this car will be a disaster. I use it more than a year ago. It covered 270.000 kms (168.000 miles). In my country there is a lot with around 300.000 miles. I did 10.000 miles since I bought the car, I did not spend a penny except than need for oil replacement. The car is a 2.5 tonns of sensitive, fine, luxury, awesome tank. The flying start, the dragrace is same crazy movement, like a Ferrari in the mud. The Range Rover can accelerate as well like a rocket (especially the V8) and the Ferrari can go in the mud a little bit. If the driver use his brain, even a 2.7 can be a good "everyday" car. I go to the job, I go to drive for a trip at holidays and enyoj the ride. Yes my car is 13th years old, yes I could by a 8 years old Ford Focus instead of this, but why should I do that? :D Thanks for this very informative video, I am very optimist about my car for the next 10 or 20.000 miles. Even a cheap "anycar" need EGR valves, timing belt, oil, filter and many more. We have only one life. Many of us can not buy a new R. Rover. But a cosy sofa is a cosy sofa after a some of parties as well. Oh and a very important information: In my country (Hungary) the yearly insurance is less than 220 pound. :)

I bought a TD6 just before Christmas partly because you said that they’re good in your older videos. Now you’ve got a TDV8 you say you wouldn’t touch a TD6! To be fair, my TD6 has been pretty well behaved. At 162k on the clock, chances are that many of the common issues have been dealt with. Only things I’ve done so far is a gearbox service and replace the cabin blower resistor. I’m too stubborn to pay for the highest band road tax anyway, so my Range Rover was always going to be pre-2006 whatever I bought!
@Bensgarage
@Bensgarage 3 жыл бұрын
I’m still happy with our TD6, but there are some ropey ones out there. Times change I guess, and now that TDV8’s are getting cheaper it might be a better buy. Unless like you, you can find a good one that has been looked after.

Just got a cheap tdv8 3.6 2006 for 4.5k. Had it 2 weeks and absolutely love it. Its in great condition apart form a a bit of rust low down in rear arches but hey I practically stole it. The fact that the v8 engine is ford derived (a nugget of information I was desperate to know btw) fills me with confidence. Who else does a v8 better than ford lol. I have bought a blanking kit for the egr valves which im going to fit this weekend. Bit risky I know but its so cheap I'm not afraid to take the plunge and not about to buy the 500 odd quid diagnostic/remap tool thing that you suggested in your vid. Awesome one Ben. I have a 230k 2010 TDV6 thats been thoroughly serviced with auto sump plate correction at 50k and proper flush plus transfer and diffs likewise on the intervals. Lately I’ve been wondering should I change to newer but once you’ve had one its to let it go. New way too expensive here in ‘Straaya’ so setting aside a relatively large but cheap in comparison annual / ugly surprise budget and aiming at 500ks. The beauty is I get to drive it. Thanks for this, well summed up. I own a 2002 L322 TD6 (yikes!) which I’ve had for 12 years. I bought it for 13,000 Euros in Latvia with 230,000km on the clock no service history (double yikes!) It’s my “Europe” car so only averages 4000 miles a year, but predictably during the first few years of ownership I was paying for the legacy of wear & tear from its previous life. 12 years on, having replaced the gearbox, front air suspension, turbocharger, fuel pump, injector, brake pipe, wiper motor, handbrake assembly, discs all round, ABS Modulator and sunder other items, and also some minor bodywork, to the tune of around 16,000 Euros over that 12 year period, for the last 3 or 4 years it has begun to behave more like a car that only does 4000 miles a year. It gets serviced by Land Rover and gets a full underbody steam clean & anti rust treatment each year. ❤Based on personal experience, my advice to anyone buying one, regardless of which year or version: 1. Full service history 2. £3000 maintained as a float for unexpected repairs 3. Source a reputable independent garage which knows Range Rovers 4. Deal with issues immediately even if the car still runs ok 5. Anti rust treatment 6. A spare runabout, access to partners’ car or other form of transport (don’t rely on this as your sole means of essential transport) 7. Full breakdown cover with vehicle recovery If following these points seems worth it for you to enjoy this awesome vehicle (it certainly is for me) then you’ve made the right choice 👍

I've heard the same, TD6(BMW) was a solid motor just very under powered. TDV6 as fitted to the RR sport and Disco's have had problems with the crank etc. So a good TDV8 would always be my recommendation, even these have their problems if not looked after, servicing is the key.

People just hatin one of the best automotive car in industry. Range Rover is a technical masterpiece having they're own problems like all manufactures. They are unique in terms of design features and capabilities while still combining supreme confort. They are not cheap to maintain,require premium fuel oil tires parts. Main problem is when service intervals or problems have been outlooked and then everything comes in cascade. For example egr failing leads to turbo end. Suspension components are beafed up and it's good to change everything in pair. Same for the tires having a good brand asures you have the full driveability. Keeping the body from rust especially rear arch which are metal instead of aluminium.

Right, for starters, Good information. Intercooler hoses. I checked mine 2007 3.6tdv8 and one had a split. A big one, 50mm long. undernieth, i didnt see it. Anyway easy fix no more smoke fuel consumption down 50%. EGR valves. Didnt do that myself. Under load the alarm across readable screen and dreaded ding sound. Engine system fault. The car goes limp mode. To resolve, Shut down, start car to clear. it wont last long. So i had new range rover EGR valves replaced. 980 quid. Time id done the messing about and bus fare bag of sand. Now the car is like driving a bucket of cream. I now have one side of a rocker cover leaking oil. Not a great deal, about a litre every three months. but its the mess on the floor. I have been told by my mechanic, who is in his 50s like me, a friend since childhood, that its a game changer. as you cant get the cover off with the shell on? He said if im going to keep it and sort it out i will need to think about the twin turbos and the injectors when the lids off. so im looking at a few k for an irritating oil leak. Any thoughts.

Hi Ben, I am a new Range Rover owner, now I have just retired and time on my hands I decided to buy what I've always wanted. So I bought a lovely 2011 Range Rover Sport with a 3.0 V6 and it is superb, although it has a rather high milage 148,000 but I love it and I really enjoy watching your videos and getting tips. Thanks. Enjoyed the airport run video...

Glad you are enjoying the videos. They are a great car, just keep them maintained and they will always do what you want them to.

I woudn't touch anything with accident history, rust or a v8. Simple td6 and tune maybe a manual swap

This is my take on owning a Land/Range Rover. Don’t buy one if you’re not a mechanic, DIYer or you have a shit load of money to pay someone else to maintain it for you.

Thanks for that Ben. It's a very useful video to watch. I'm looking to buy a 2006 on Petrol V8 , (no point in having a diesel as I live in Outer London and diesel is a very dirty word here with the current mayor, results of election not come out yet) and I don't suppose it will be any better under whoever wins this time. I will be looking to put the car on LPG as I'm a fan of it and had it on my last two Discos. It would be nice to find one recently fitted with a new system, but if I can't find what I want I will go for a new system.

I've never liked LPG myself, but I know a lot of people seem to get on ok with it.

Good video...I was thinking about a discovery 3 a while back and found a channel called LR Time. The husband and wife team work on the car themselves and wow...it seems that Land Rovers will bankrupt you 1 day before they make you consider suicide. Why oh why can they look and drive like a a Land Rover but last like a Toyota Hilux or Amazon? I truly believe that Land Rover don't care about reliability as they know people will buy there cars regardless. XC90 is the way forward for me....yeah....yeah....I know what you guys are gonna say BUT......
