A peaceful people (sic) with a dreadful past who have never faced up to it and have never apologized or paid reparations for their wrong doings. Several of my parents generation who were victims of japanese brutality would never buy anything Japanese post war. And I don't blame them. The Japanese were never accountable. Its wrong!

I remember reading some decades ago that a government representative suggested collecting testimonials of veterans' war time experiences to show how good they were. A group quietly suggested to him, "That is not a good idea". That was the end of the proposed project.

Welp, Unit 731 guys were never convicted. As mentioned in the video, the US had no problem working with war criminals or turning a blind eye on their past as long as they were useful. The Japanese themselves opted to stay silent, with no real political power interested in admitting how the war looked like and what the Japanese troops did all over Asia and Pacific.

Probably true of even some of the armchair historians who think it's terrible through the lens of 80 years. Japan was basically north Korea only the rest of the world traded with them. Scary.

The argument against this is your grandparents were voluntary combatants fighting opposition combatants. One of the main arguments against the nukes are that they eliminated so many innocent men, women and children. Not to mention the cruel and inhumane way people perished for years afterwards from radiation.

@@NANA-kf1csI don’t think a lot of people volunteered. You know most soldiers were conscripted. The Japanese had some unique beliefs that would mean the fighting in Japan would have been very hard, they followed a death before dishonour, the fighting on the islands was brutal. Plus American needed the nukes to take over as the worlds number one power.

This is all good stuff, but you did not mention the huge contribution made by Dr. W. Edwards Deming on introducing quality processes to Japanese industry. He helped them go from an importing nation to an exporting one that turned out some of the greatest quality products still to this day. The highest award for quality in the world is awarded each year in Japan. It is called the Deming Prize.

What a great comment, I wish there were more like this. I guess I could also bring up Harry J. Anslinger, who spearheaded the post-war anti-drug crusade in Japan. It failed miserably, because he didn't consider the widespread use of meth (known as _Philopon_ in Japan) a problem, unlike some other substances. According to what I could find, as much as 7.5 percent of Japanese people might have used meth at some point in their lives by the mid-1950's.

I remember hearing a briefing about Deming, statisical process control in re-building Japan's industry. We were told that Japan should build a statue to Demming and that we needed to apply his principles.

@@kenwalker687 Deming is considered a national hero, but I don't know if they built any statues to him. That Deming Prize ceremony is a national televised event, much like we used to do the Oscars/Emmys. It is sad to think that very few American companies have ever won it.

My great uncle Billy served in the USMC during WW2. He was stationed in Tokyo to act as a police officer for a year after the war. He said it was so ugly he had no desire to ever go back.

For all those who question the use of nukes, here are some questions for you: 1. Would you prefer to have it that around a million US military should die in order to conquer Imperial Japan? Because what other realistic alternative was there, apart from US invasion? 2. Are you comfortable with upwards of 4 million Japanese citizens dying during a conventional weaponry conquest of Imperial Japanese main islands by the USA? 3. What proof is there of any legitimate and credible surrender attempt on the part of the Japanese? 4. If you are aware of a legitimate surrender attempt by the Japanese, what were the terms of such a surrender? Explain, in detail, what parts of the Imperial Japanese empire the Japanese intended to keep? 5. Why are you more concerned over the suffering of Japanese, when you seem to have so little compassion for the millions who were murdered by the Imperial Japanese... all because of their home-grown racism and militant 'bushido' ideologies? 6. Are you comfortable with half of Imperial Japan being controlled by the USSR...? This would have been a certain outcome, had the USA not forced a rapid surrender. 7. Why are you so certain that the Japanese were just about to surrender anyway in 1945, when all evidence of the time exists to the contrary? What do you know, that the Allies at the time didn't? 8. Please note that it would not have been an American invasion of Japan ... it would have been an allied invasion of Japan that would have included troops from Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and the United States.

Yes, he got fired because he forgot who was Commander-in-Chief of all US armed forces and had his own plans in Korea. Also, he kept POTUS waiting for him, which is minor compared to his other offenses. He probably wanted to be the next POTUS.

Japan has been sending soldiers to fight in wars with the US since at least the 90's to train and develop their military. Iraq and Afghanistan had Japanese soldiers fighting in open combat.

I like this story of the 20th century instead of Plato, Aristotle, Alexander the Great, or even the Vikings. Japan probably learned from its mistakes, the bomb had to be dropped to save more American and Japanese lives. From the ashes of war came the rise of a new economic Japanese nation, no country in the world had done that except the Japanese.

Did you really just say the Japanese people heard their emperor for first time with this surrender speech? How? Radio had been around for 15-20 yrs. And, the emperor had been in power for a while.

It's a crazy notion! Not only that, the type of Japanese which the Emperor spoke in was a Royal and highly formal form and ordinary Japanese people listening could not fathom that he's trying to say that the Empire is surrendering.

As a living god, the ordinary Japanese people were not allowed ANY contact with the emperor. That meant not looking at him directly, and not being allowed to be addressed by him. He had never before made a radio address, so that was indeed the first time the populace had heard his voice. Him addressing the Japanese people was one of the requirements of the peace treaty and the first step in removing his god status. Also, the photo of him with MacArthur which was shown in this video was meant to show how puny he (and Japan) was compared to the powerful Americans. Propoganda toward the goal of removing ultra-nationalism from the society.

Japan became a crazed imerialistic autocracy after the stock market crash in 1929 and the world entering a deep depression, similar to what happened in Germany. Before that, they were an established Democracy, but it was wrecked by economic collapse. Similar to Germany, the road to war and the ultimate defeat have seen a complete gutting of warmongering and the population has since, in both countries, turned to economic domination of markets and a resistance to have nuclear weapons or any advanced military at all. Likely this is also due to the USA and its sitting on both countries post war.

Stopped watching because of the scratch pattern that was completely unnecessary. Give us the facts, use pretty borders but don’t try to make it seem that every image from WWII was scored at 90 and 45 degrees. Such a shame since the content was quite interesting. However, there are other less afflicted videos that say the same thing. I suppose this attention to detail is what separates amateur and professional content creators from one and other.

The atomic bomb absolutely would have been invented even if the US hadn't; too many scientists, too many physicists, and too many theories and calculations had been made in the twenties and thirties for someone to not eventually make one. It gave the japanese incentive to surrender, and the casualties from a actual invasion were so bad the US minted like 2 million purple heart medals in anticipation, so many in fact they only started minting new ones in the 2000s, that is how bad they expected it

Those two bombs saved millions of lives in Japan, and, very importantly, gave the Japanese leadership a way to END that devastating world war. Get a good reference source that is easy to read, like 50 Common Myths About Japanese-Americans and the Atomic Bomb in WWII: The Non-PC Answers You Will Not Find on Wikipedia.
