The killing of the dog was a symbol. Initially, Fresh showed more compassion for the dog's life (Roscoe) than Chuckie's, since he didn't want to see Roscoe fight anymore. He knew something bad might happen to Chuckie when using him as a pawn, knowing his loud mouth would get Esteban and Corky beefing. In order to show his commitment to removing emotion from the equation (this is a common lesson to becoming a GM in Chess), he emptied the clip - he felt he made a mistake valuing Roscoe's life more than Chuckie's and this was his way of correcting the mistake/doubling down - also known as a 'Pawn Sacrifice' in Chess. RIP Roscoe, another fallen pawn in Fresh's game but absolutely necessary. The point of the movie is to show how absolutely extraordinary you had to be to escape poverty as an orphan in Brooklyn during the crack era.
@Thejordanenthusiast

Damn. Good observation and breakdown. I always thought Fresh just didn’t want Roscoe to keep being a fighting/attack dog and put him down for that reason; like he knew Roscoe’s innocence was snatched from him and could never come back after being trained that way and developed a taste for blood.

I always felt that he killed the dog to make sure he can go through with being responsible for the deaths that he was about to cause . He has seen a lot of violence, but never killed anything himself. That's why he was able to get out the car and watch the hit that he was responsible for.

10:43 I read that this scene was shot in cuts, and that the dogs fighting were friends. When you see them "fighting," they're really playing. Actual sounds of dogfights were dubbed in to make the scene convincing. And in the final scene where that dog died, they just used a stuffed dummy. NGL they had me for a second so I ended up looking it up.

I peeped in Snowfall that Skully could be Stacey. Lets say Skully is Stacey's street name. He survived to become a security guard at the high school in Dope. We all know Skully/Stacey changes his life around. Skullys a blood, Staceys a blood. Skully/Stacey is from Inglewood in Snowfall, the Wood, and Dope. Let's just say, the wood starts first, young Mike is tryna date Stacey sister, meanwhile, Stacey is gang bangin in da streets building up to beefing with Franklin in the late 80s. Skully's daughter gets killed over the beef which gives him a change of heart. Years later he's now a security guard still in Inglewood, and he tells the young bloods to ask about Stacey cuz niggas know how he used to be.

The chess strategies Fresh uses to manipulate his surroundings are just genius. I loved how the movie contrasts the grim realities with moments that remind you Fresh is still just a kid. Giancarlo Esposito and Samuel L. Jackson really add depth to the narrative. But that ending, with Fresh "snitching," really leaves you questioning the boundaries of survival and morality. This movie may not break new ground, but it definitely makes you think about the complexities of inner-city life.

My theory on why Fresh put down Roscoe: I think because the dog was trained to be an fighting/attack dog and got a taste for blood; Fresh clearly didn’t want Roscoe to be that. If Fresh kept him, Roscoe might be a liability and attack the wrong person or other dog/animal; if Fresh let him go, Roscoe might get recognized, picked up and used by someone else involved in dog fighting.

When I was younger there was a Black Cinema marathon on television on Sunday afternoon. Fresh (1994) was played right before "The Wood." I legitimately through that Mike was in witness protection and his mother was cop. The sister was moved elsewhere. The Wood movie was Michael's chance to live a normal life after taking down Esteban. Living a normal life chasing girls instead of dime bags. It least that's the way I saw it. Again, thank you for reviewing this film. I had a lot of fun reliving this memory.

The Plan was to get back at all the people he blamed for getting his sister hooked on drugs to and shutting her out. Step 1 buy a brick Step 2 was he needed word to get back to Corky he had a brick so he tricks Chucky into thinking he works for Esteban so he will tell everyone who listens where to find the brick Step 3 was to safely get robbed for the brick to build mistrust but Chucky bought a gun and got himself killed Step 4 he had to hardend his heart against watching murders so he killed the dog. The dog was also ruined at this point bc he had killed another dog. Step 5 get Jake killed. He knew Corky would send Jake to pick him up off the street to interrogate him about the brick. There he was use Corky's extreme paranoia to get Jake killed. Step 6 was to send Esteban to kill James who was also using drugs to control his sister. Step 7 was to set up Esteban for the murders with evidence so he could get witness protection. Fresh knew he couldn't just snitch to the cops about drugs bc that wasn't enough to get witness protection or Estaban off the streets. Now Fresh can give the the murders and drug spots for a major Kingpin.

I thought he was going to show more of Chucky’s “I got the dope moves” response. “I got stupid juice. I bust the stupid move” 😂 And also Fresh’s “I’m looking for Hector, not your big gorilla monkey ass” Sean Nelson was great in this movie. I wanted to see him in more stuff. Obviously he was in The Wood….he was the miniseries The Corner, a couple episodes of NY Undercover, but I wanted to see him in more. He’s really talented

I think he killed the dog for 2 reasons. 1 He knew he wasn't going to be there to take care of the dog especially since his boy was dead. 2 He needed to know what it felt like to shot and kill something alive just in case he had to do the same to a person.

The dog like a lot of people in society are too far gone for saving. The dog killed another dog, just a matter of time before it harms a person. It needed to happen like the worst of society needs to be put down for the safety of the rest.

Fresh is one on-point movie. Even if the whole chess thing wouldn't happen in real life, it's absolutely genius. You caught onto the whole chess symbolism pretty well. Corky and Esteban were the kings on the board. His sister was the queen. And Chucky was Fresh's knight. That last one is hinted throughout the movie; Fresh's dad notes how Fresh likes using his knight because of those crazy jumps and moves. What does Chucky constantly say throughout the movie? "I got the dope moves." It may seem like poser talk on the first viewing, but putting two and two together, with the way Fresh begins using the people around him as chess pieces, it makes absolute sense. Also, Fresh kills the dog as a method of desensitizing himself from the violence that's coming ahead. Notice that after he kills Roscoe, he is more numb to the violence that goes on the further his human chess plan goes into action. He watches Esteban slaughter an entire crew while eating a candy bar. And he doesn't let his emotional guard down until he's in the comfort of his father. A similar tactic is used in the Ice Cube movie, Dangerous Ground. Cube's character slaughters a ceremonial goat before going into war, narrating that he'll be seeing a whole lot more bloodshed. As far as hood movies go, Fresh is one of my all-time favorites. It made me look at chess in a different way, and there are details that made me think of my middle school days in NY, which was around the time this movie was made. Btw, Big Pun used Chucky's lines about the Punisher in his Captial Punishment album intro. ;-)

Young Roddy used the audio from the Fresh vs Sam chess games for background vocals on 'The Come Up' to a T, if you go and listen to it. This is definitely an underrated film. Giancarlo put his whole 2 feet into that Esteban role, "Ayeee mi poquito Frreeshhh!" is still the best line in the movie imo.
