Jeffrey Cole (Omar Epps) is a recent graduate of the Cincinnati police academy who dreams of working undercover. Fun fact: the pool table rape scene wasn't in the original script. That whole scene was LL's personal idea. He thought of it and suggested it to the director. Don't know about anyone else but it makes me look at LL differently that's for sure lol

Definitely based on the experiences of Jeff Reed an undercover cop in Boston. The God character was based on a guy from New York that had taken over the Roxbury section. The FEDS thought he named himself God because he was a 5%er ( gods and earths) so it’s definitely based on that

I was born & raised in Boston so I def heard the stories my pops told me he was a drug lord from Roxbury so I did my research come to find he from corona Queens and he came to Roxbury pretty much at the height of the crack era and set-up shop in orchard park projects he had a good 4-5 year run made a lot of money bought Business n property and shit to wash his money but NY dudes n Boston dudes was constantly going to war over drug spots it was a wild time back in those days💯

Underrated gem of a movie. To this day the pool stick scene was messed up, Disney owned Miramax when this movie came out. They NEVER should have allowed that scene. I bet both LL and Omar Epps went to therapy after they filmed the movie.

Fun fact: Portions of this movie were filmed in my old stomping grounds, the Lincoln Courts Housing projects in Downtown Cincinnati, OH. This was at a time when they were moving people out in preperation to tear the spot down and build townhouses. They even paid to move my sister from her apartment there so they could film scenes in and around it(the only scene that made it into the movie was the apartment hallway scene).

I was in 10th grade when this came out. I took a greyhound bus to visit my big brother in Brooklyn for the weekend. He was in his early 20s and we watched this on demand (IYKYK) at his apartment and smoked my lil 20 sack that i smuggled with me on the bus 😂 on the rooftop. Core memory stuff, but the very next day I went to Times Square while my brother was at work and I was outside in the crowd for MTVs TRL. …I met Omar Epps when he came out to intro a video as a guest and it was trippy as hell since we had just watched in too deep night before…pretty sure it was 4/20/2000. Man. This video brought back memory I almost forgot. Thank you

I read that it was a based off a true story as well.. the real J.Reid's name was Jeffrey Coy but in real life he wasnt able to overcome his feeling of betrayal against "god" who's real name was Darryl Whitting and killed himself. His daughter went to law school to become a prosecutor but ended up becoming a Sargent at a youth home to help inner city kids. She views her father as hero for helping taking that kingpin down

I love watching this movie. I grew up in the apartments behind that old boxing gym. That's boxing gym is now a school. Those apartments that used to be Lincoln Courts is now Tore down and rebuilt and they even built a damn soccer stadium in that neighborhood. Everything from that Kroger to House of Adams store is GONE. That whole strip is basically nightclubs and food spots. This movie is like a time machine.

There is another Omar Epps film you should review. It's called "Brother" and it's about a guy in the Yakuza who comes all the way from Japan to find his brother. He starts a gang that has both blacks and Japanese in the group and builds a friendship with Omar Epps. It sounds like a drama but there are a lot of mob deaths in the film and Ashley Banks has a cameo in the film.

Great movie but you should look up the story that the movie came from. The undercover cop was too deep for real. He killed himself before showing up to testify against them because he was that deep into it. He really didn't think he was a cop anymore.

It was good actors but the players didn’t match the scenery. It reminded me of Belly when the city slickers was bangin dope in Omaha. Made the movie slow and weird in some parts. One minute bro in the country, the hood, the jects. Movie had New Jack City lookin dudes, grimy dudes, blonde nerdy dudes, crackheads. Shyt was throwin me off but I fux wit it.

Was JUST talking about this movie when watching the last video and this just made my day. I LOVED seeing LL play a villain. I’ve always assumed he had a clause where he does NOT die in a movie 🤷🏽♀️ I’m only 7 mins in and already thought “Damn, Weebay been fine. I remember my only real motivation to see this movie was the small like 11 seconds Mya was in a flashback scene. At least I'm sure that was the only time she was in the movie. She an all star.
