Clerks the Animated Series (2000), one of the best cartoons of all time, died before it could live. That’s right! Kevin Smith converted Clerks, his R rated 1994 indie film, into a family-friendly cartoon on Disney ABC. It was magically witty, edgy, and smart, but it only ran for two episodes before swiftly getting booted from the network! This video explores the cartoon that preceded Clerks 3, how this unexpectedly charming series was greenlit, what made it so good, and what lead to its demise. Also, let's throw in some history about adult animation.

Hey everyone! I’m trying to get Kevin Smith to see this video, especially the part at the end where I talk directly to him and ask for an interview! If anyone is so inclined, could you Tweet the video link to him (@ThatKevinSmith)? Maybe if enough people send it his way, he’ll notice it! Thank you in advance 😊

It’s a shame this show never caught on. The first few episodes were kinda rough (still funny, but finding their footing), but by the time they were doing that crossover parody of Temple of Doom and Bad News Bears, it was pure gold!

Here's one for you. For years when I was younger I loved wearing purple and was quite built like The Grimace. My friends called me The Grimace (among other things). So we're all sitting on the couch goofing off and watching this episode and the SECOND that "Nothing can kill the Grimace" line popped out the room went silent and everyone just started staring at me before all of them breaking into fake bows and "we're not worthy" at me 😁. Ahhh happy times!

Hello, I love your presentation of the clerk's animated series I think I was about 21 when it was around I remember cartoon Network actually aired it back then but when media play was around me and my first girlfriend went and bought the DVD collection and I have to say at the time of my genius mind I was able to make a copy of it on VHS. So everything that you talk about brought back many memories. Again love your presentation hope you do another video like this on another animated series.

I recently revisited this series for the first time since my teenage years after stumbling over the commentary tracks on KZfaq, and I was fucking cackling and wheezing all the way through. The entire sequence where Randal heckles Jay's lawyer over the fact that he won't sue them until he finally caves is just incredible and had me in tears.

I love Samurai Jack, but I don’t think I’d call it “adult” in the same way the other examples were. It doesn’t possess the mature jokes that would make the other listed show inappropriate for younger audiences.
@liampoulton-king7479
@liampoulton-king7479 3 жыл бұрын
@Tom Ffrench But Samurai Jack wasn't made for adults, it was made for kids with appeal for adults. It's a family show, not an "adult" show. I'm not arguing family guy is more "mature" than Samurai Jack or whatever, I'm simply arguing that "adult animation" would be animation created without children being intended as part of the audience.

Great video! Well researched and presented. Love the details. Gave me some flashbacks to little bits of info that haven't crossed my mind in over a decade... so thanks for the revisit on that entire saga that was this series. Which was one of the best things ever created by people for any reason. I too also first saw this series very early on, a year before someone would turn me onto Mallrats, and thus start my Kevin Smith fandom. Even then it wasn't until a few years later when listening to the commentary tracks for the series that it occurred to me that I was one of the few people who saw at least one of those two episodes when they first aired. Clear flashback to sitting crossed legged in my family's living room watching the opening titles. I really hope that now that Clerks III is finally happening, there might be a renewed interest in reviving the series. At SDCC a few years back, Kevin commented that there might have been something in motion soon for that to happen... but it's been crickets ever since. Fingers crossed. I just REALLY want to see the next episode they pitched, with Randal buying Kit from Knight Rider, then Kit getting jealous of Dante and pulling a Single White Female on him. Sounds amazing. I shall continue to dream.

Came back for one more comment, just to point out that the more I think about it, episode 2 is likely the Peace of media that officially cemented my love of "running gags". "Why are we walking like this?" Made me laugh harder and harder, each time it popped up. But it's a style of humor that I personally find an interesting art form. Beautiful Troll Humor, I'd call it 😂 My most recent movie review for Richard Pryor's "Bustin' Loose" is practically made out of so many running gags, yet I'm more amazed at how frequently I keep finding ways to use them, that still feels fresh to me. Like, just when I think it's time to leave a gag be, I end up like "Yeeeaahh, but the joke I just came up with, for it, is pretty funny though...😏" 🖖🏾😂

I watched the debut of this show when it aired and was so ready for episode 2. Then I came back for what should have been the third episode and it was just NBA basketball. I came back for week 3 and there was no Clerks, but "maybe just other things pre-empted it" I thought. It wasn't until week 5 with no more episodes that my little heart finally realized the show was done and not coming back. This little two episode weird show that no one else in my area but me seemed to have watched was gone and I could only tell people how awesome it was. It sucks, but at least we got the DVD with all the finished episodes a few years later. I could finally show my friends the "Who is driving? Oh no, Bear is driving! how could that be?" scene that probably made me sound like a maniac for years when I was describing it.

I found this video thanks to RebelTaxi making a video on this show as well, I love Kevin Smith’s movies and Clerks was a funny show that unfortunately was screwed over heavily by the network, brilliant shows like this networks just have trouble understanding, similar thing happened to The Dana Carvey Show a few years prior and Titus on FOX. I feel like if Clerks aired on FOX with shows like King of the Hill and Family Guy it would’ve fit right in instead of a family oriented network like ABC
