AttentionDeficitGuy she was fairly memorable, but i think what they mean is completely memorable. I think izma lacks something that prevents her from being a classic, maybe it was the movie she had to be in, or maybe in this case the hero was mostly very unlikeable and a jerk so we cheered her on more often as the should be hero instead of a villain

For the twist villains, I was afraid that is what Bing Bong from "Inside Out" was going to be. While I was enjoying the movie very much, I was thinking "It's only a matter of time before he's revealed as a bad guy". When he wasn't revealed to be a villain, I was so glad to see that. His last scene still makes me cry just thinking about it.

So Disney villians were more intereating and memorable than the heroes where's today its a complete opposite. My question is..... Why can't we have it both ways now? why can't both the heroes and the villians be interesting and memorable? It's comes from this quote that I've heard before, "Every great hero needs a great villan". We all know Batmans a great hero, but would he be as good if he Joker wasn't as great of a villian?
@Lauren_210
@Lauren_210 6 жыл бұрын
RedWolf316 The Renaissance era did this pretty well for the most part. Films like The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin had both their good guys and bad guys be on the same level of memorability and the heroes were just as interesting and favorable as the villains. Another reason I can think of as to why the modern villains aren’t as memorable is because back then, we often spent the whole movie with them just as much as the main hero(es) and got to know their hopes and desires. The hopes and desires element is not only reserved for the heroes and villains require characterization too. Imagine if we spent the whole movie with Simba for the majority of it and didn’t take the time to know Scar as a character and what his goals are and such. If we saw Simba come back to fight Scar to take back the Pridelands and resolve his issues, then the final battle they have would not have been as impactful as it was in the movie. The family drama and internal conflict of the main character would not have been all that interesting if Scar was a bland villain.
@Gamelover254
@Gamelover254 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and so on all had fantastic heroes and villains, which is why they're commonly seen as the best. I've always loved Ariel and Belle, but I love Ursula and Gaston just as much. The renaissance era of Disney had the best balance in my opinion. The heroes were really well designed, likable and a bit more complex, while the villain was able to have just as much focus yet not steal the spotlight.
@helenanilsson5666
@helenanilsson5666 6 жыл бұрын
Because developing a character takes time and a movie has a limited time frame to work with. Thus the writers have to prioritize between their main protagonist, main antagonist, supporting cast and the actual plot of the story. (Btw, Batman and other well established brands don't really count the same way as brand new stories do - there has been a pop culture mythos around Batman and Joker for decades so writers don't have to devote as much time establishing them) The Renaissance Disney films still had rather simplified plots and the supporting cast was usually either comic relief or some instant romantic interest. Therefore there was still plenty enough time for both the protagonist and the antagonist. With more complex plots and/or more fleshed out supporting cast and complex protagonists, more time has to be taken from the antagonists because there just isn't enough time in one movie for everyone to shine the way classic villains did.

I always thought king candy was an example of a twist villain done right. Going in you already knew he was the bad guy so you got to enjoy him being evil and foiling the plans of the heroes. If you think about it the reason why the old school Disney movies were great was because the movie focused on both the hero and the villain on their Journeys. While the hero was on a quest the villain was on a quest of their own and that's what brought their paths together. New Disney is all about focusing solely on the hero's journey and then at the last second giving you a surprise villain that has no payoff at all or is just unsatisfying as hell. Because it's just like Doug said, when we know what the villain is doing from the get-go it's fun to see them in action, when they try to see deceive you the whole movie that they are a good guy and then at the last 10 minutes reveal themselves at the villain it completely changes their character and it's not warranted or as fun to watch.

Personally, I was disappointed when Hans turned out to be a villain. I was hoping for him to just be the wrong guy for the happily ever after bit. Not a bad guy, just the wrong guy. Lotso and Mother Godel scare me because I think there are more people like them in reality: Controlling, hardline, duplicitous, selfish people. I think these ones are great because by knowing them in films, perhaps we can recognize them in the real world.

Rah Collier That's very true. First love isn't always true love. Now that would have been a great additional message. I also don't like how easy he gets after he shows his true colors. He literally just tried to kill Elsa and left Anna to die and all he gets is a punch in the face and locked up.
@WobblesandBean
@WobblesandBean 7 жыл бұрын

@Kage-pm6qi
@Kage-pm6qi 7 жыл бұрын
With one simple change you made a far more interesting conflict between the characters while keeping the overall direction the same and retained consistency with the characters. This alternative climax while simple sets up so many more interesting morals than the original as well: (as Loyda Perez mentioned) First love doesn't always mean true love, good people lie as well and a liar doesn't always have malicious intent, and even the best of people can do terrible things if they get pushed to a point where they feel there's no other choice.

Personally, I like Dr. Facilier as a character, a swindling Voodoo shaman. Could he have been better developed? yes, but he was a step back toward original Disney, He didnt try to mask being evil, as soon as he turned the prince into a frog, he let his evil side out, as the prince's underling was easily persuaded by the idea of becoming the master of his own destiny.

His character theme is unique, his song number is indeed intimidating, his personality as a whole interprets intellect and delivers a lot of charm, charisma and likability, has an epic death scene, got phenomenal traits to shine in him, and he's undoubtedly the best character in his own respective film.

I think this is the main reason Azula from Avatar the Last Airbender works. She is given some humanity and a personal history that logically leads to the person she is during the series; however, it is the fact that she is SO evil that makes her a great villain. She lives to manipulate people and is really, really good at it. This makes her one of the most memorable villains in animation to date.

One of the best Easter Eggs from the first season is when Iroh is relating Zuko's backstory and they flash back to the Agni Kai. We see Iroh's reaction to the scarring and next to him is this young girl with a look of evil joy on her face. If you'd started from the beginning you'd have no idea who she was at that point and might not even remember her until the rewatch since Iroh was the character we knew and his reaction seemed more important. It was a great touch that showed they really knew where things were going.

He's my favorite just because in his sick way, he was doing the right thing, he sees Esmeralda as temptation sent by the devil, Quasi as a pawn sent to him from God, and everyone else was a sinner unworthy of his virtue. As many of the real life villains; Hitler, Stalin, Charles Manson, if you asked them their crimes were just the means to reach their twisted goal. THAT'S what makes Frollo so great, he's the impersonation of real life most horrible people. Also what I find interesting is that he raised Quasimodo and he was the opposite. I could do a whole essay on this story just because if you think about it it's very interesting even if it's just a tale.

Same for Treasure Planet -- I mean, look at the designs of BOTH villains (LJS AND the spider-guy) How could you NOT know they were the villains, even if you HAD never heard the name Long John Silver before? Unless he was referring to the somewhat surprising twist at the end of the booby trap making the dead Captain Flint the villain? I dunno. Point is, there was no surprise villain -- we knew who it was from the start.

As a person who watched Toy Story 2 so much as a kid I can recite it I feel like I have to defend Stinky Pete as a villain. Because he is SOOOOOO much better than Hans. 1st of all, Toy Story 2 is not a modern film, I mean it was released in the late 90s, and this was one of their first twist villains, so it was fine at the time. But even then, I don't fully hate twist villains, as long as their done right. 1st, they need to have what any good twist has, subtle clues hidden throughout the movie that suggests everything is not what it seems. Maybe you won't guess it the first time watching, and you shouldn't, but when you go back knowing the twist you notice these clues and it makes watching it even better. 2nd, when they're revealed as a villain, they have to be good villains in the short amount of time they get to be evil. Let's take a look at Stinky Pete, throughout the movie he constantly tries to stop Woody from leaving, at first you think it's because he believes Woody will have a better life in the museum and he cares about Woody. But then it's revealed that he's selfish and only cares about himself, and Woody is just there to get him into the museum. Lines like, "Andy's growing up, and there's nothing you can do about it." Suddenly goes from sounding wise and speaking a hard to face truth, to manipulative. Almost overtime Woody reconsiders leaving it's because Stinky Pete says something to him. Hans meanwhile, is just a twist for the sake of a twist. Throughout the whole movie he's portrayed as a kind and sweet guy, there's nothing that can be seen as hinting at his betrayal. Hell there's even a shot of him giving a genuine smile when no one else is looking. Not a smirk, a smile. There is absolutely nothing behind his twist it just kinda happens. Sorry, for this wall of text, just wanted to defend a much better done twist against the horrible one. The rest of the video makes some really good points though.

I feel like Pixar does twist villains so much better than Disney. Back when Toy Story 2 did it (and it was the first time we ever had a twist villain), it was a rare concept for Disney/Pixar films to do that but I hate that despite it being a legit good film, it was the one that unfortunately started off this trend. Besides this one, the only films I've seen where the twist villain really works and plays a significant role in the plot of the movie are Toy Story 3 with Lotso and Coco with Ernesto.

Agree wholeheartedly. The logic and motive behind Stinky Pete is well written and actually adds to the story. Same with Waternoose in Monsters Inc. It's a surprise, but it makes sense. Hans was completely unneeded as a villain. Heck, when I was watching Frozen for the first time, I was expecting it to take the Enchanted route where Ana would just realize that she's not in love with Hans like she thought she was.

Chernabog/The Devil never even got a line and Maleficent and Lady Tremaine only became interesting in their respective remakes. I know Doug hates the Maleficent movie but I think Angelina Jolie's take on the character was WAY more interesting than the undeveloped, one-dimensional "mistress of all evil" from the original, who was just evil for the sake of being evil. Hades is considered so since he was a show stopper for most if not all of the movie. As soon as he appeared on screen you knew he was going to be the main focus. As soon as he showed up, he vastly represented the critics point. You look at any other main character and they are dressed in more "bright" colors, showing what role they play. Megara was dressed in between to show her confliction between light and dark. Hades however, was that dark, hazy blue with hair of blue fire. He changed colors to pink and red fire hair only to show his anger. During which, his eyes popped out of his skull and made his presence even more intimidating. He plays more of a Lex Luther kind of villain. His demeanor and stature all give of this sense of "I have everything planned out, and I'm just waiting for you to play into my hand." Until he gets angry, at which point it changes to nothing but hate towards that which ruined his plan. Princess and the frog on the other hand has a different style with it's representation. A lot of the back drops are dark and dreary, while all of the main cast are brighter and more noticeably dressed. Even Dr. Facilier had bright aspects to his costume. The Bright red clashed with every other color on his outfit. Is he darker than the rest of the cast, sure, but most of his major scenes have him bathed in bright lights of varying assortments. I love Dr. Facilier, but he doesn't enough menacing times outside of magic use. Hades was funny, but still had this air of "This is all my doing. This whole scenario is my puppet, as is everyone involved." While Dr. Facilier is more creepy in the way he moves, his actual prowess is less than appealing. A man who uses "friends on the other side" to get what he wants vs. The God of the underworld playing an intricate game of power to get what he wants. Dr. Facilier gets his power from his spirit buddies, Hades has his power and uses it to get what ever he wants. I agree with you that he was animated quite well, but so is a lot of things Disney does. Facilier's song was great, but Hades didn't sing a song, thus making him seem all the more evil . Hades didn't need a song to give him what he needed explained. If anything, it plays out better for him since SPOILERS: Megara is his puppet and he has no intention of letting anyone know that too soon. In point, even thought I think Facilier is great, Hades really does have an upper hand in terms of Villainy.

Ratigan (and The Great Mouse Detective as a whole) are both extremely underrated and important. The Black Cauldron bombed and while GMD made a modest profit, it kept the studio from going bankrupt and they were able to rebound with Oliver & Company and The Little Mermaid, which in turn sparked the Disney Renaissance. As for Ratigan, you can't go wrong with Vincent Price for your villain. He oozed menace and charm making for a great foil to Basil of Baker Street.

In order to get that opportunity to become a famous musician and "seize his moment", kill Hector by poisoning his drink, leave him there to die, and become a plagiarist by stealing his songs. 2. Him killing Hector caused for Imelda and Coco to believe that he never returned home and cause a family to live with a life-long, unnecessary hatred for music and ban anything related to music all the way up to Miguel's generation. Plus, Hector had a 3 year old daughter and Ernesto didn't give two shits regarding how the loss of a parent was going to affect Coco, especially at such a young age. 3. He attempted to murder a child by throwing Miguel off a building just moments before going out to perform. 4. He was able to hide and cover up the evidence for about 80-90 years, which must be a new record for a Disney/Pixar villain. (I've seen some of the deleted scenes from Coco and one of them involved a different version of Ernesto's death with the final climax being Miguel having to return home by running through the Marigold bridge as the peddles are fading away and Ernesto chasing him violently such as breaking through a glass window to catch up to Miguel. He seemed even more terrifying in the deleted scenes and I was on the edge of my seat with that one particular deleted scene).

So do I. I mean as much as I enjoyed Bellwether, I wished they would have made her into an ally instead such as a damsel in distress instead of the villain just to throw in that "wolf in sheeps clothing" catch phrase. The only other sheep villain in cartoon history has been Chirin, from the anime "Ringing Bell of Chirin". I hate the way Disney and Pixar treats most of their villains nowadays in labeling them as "evil for the sake of it" when that only suits an amount of their other villains. The only twist villain to work out is King Candy more than Hans and Bellwether, because those guys lack development, deeper motivations, and more screen time to give us more than one reason behind their actions instead of throwing in "money and power" as an easy, lazy answer to almost every villain we see and expected to believe when I refuse to believe Bellwether is doing this ONLY because of Lionheart, or else that's just lazy writing there.

Doug singled Mother Gothel out as a lackluster villain elsewhere. Lindsay (the former Nostalgia Chick) also has been vocal in her disdain. Sadly. Maybe she could have been flashier or funnier, but for my money Mother Gothel was a dead-on depiction of an emotional abuser who had me thoroughly creeped out in a way the more blatant types never quite had. She's not just bad, she's insidious! I found myself wishing the movie had been out when I had been a child, because it's helpful to point out those passive-aggressive techniques of hers for what they are and I never had that.

Okay, someone explain to me in what universe Mother Gothel is "lackluster" as a villain. I've thought about it again and she's less a combo of Ursula and Lady Tremaine than a combo of Ursula and FROLLO. She's not just stereotypically "evil" and vain, she had to make Rapunzel believe for 18 years that she is a caring, loving, responsible mother, all the while being only interested in her hair. That takes some SERIOUS acting/manipulation skills, as well as possibly a healthy dose of madness/self-deception. She knows EXACTLY how to keep Rapunzel eternally underfoot by continually undercutting her budding confidence, all the while seeming like a concerned parent. All for the sake of keeping herself young. That's some SERIOUS dedication to your vanity. How is that not fascinating? She's done what no other Disney villain besides Frollo - universally agreed to be one of the best villains - has done: Making the protagonist LOVE her. You cannot fight, let alone defeat, someone you love the way Rapunzel loved Mother Gothel. (It's in her name! She is MOTHER!) Even at the very end, when Gothel has shown her true colors, she STILL has the power to emotionally manipulate Rapunzel ("Now look what you've DONE, Rapunzel.") and even at this point Rapunzel is unwilling to the very end to actively harm the only parent she's known. She's down on her knees and BEGGING this person that has kept her imprisoned for 18 years. And when she falls out of the window, Rapunzel actually makes a gesture trying to SAVE her. That is power, guys. That goes BEYOND "I'm going to destroy you." It's "I'm going to make you LOVE me even though you know you shouldn't." Consider this parallel: "No, you listen! All my life you've told me the world is a dark, cruel place, but I know now that the only thing dark and cruel about it is people like YOU!" "NO! You were wrong about the world. And you were wrong about ME! And I will never let you use my hair again!" ....how are these not the signs of a powerful, insidious villain?

Oliver Cuenca why? It was a neat twist for Disney to do. They could've just made it that Ana falls in love with some rando prince and they get married, but they instead made the prince the villain who was using the Disney cliche of one day falling in love to manipulate her and take over.

Hans motiviations actually make sense during the song. As the youngest brother he felt jealous, cheated, and overshadowed by his other sibilings. So was willing to do whatever means neccessary to become a king, even killing. Anna just screamed easy target to him.

I agree with Hans from Frozen suddenly being the villain out of nowhere. There was no foreshadowing of his true motivations. It's like the writers got halfway through the script and some studio exec told them they needed a villain so they decided to make him one.

This is why I feel most of today's animated Disney movies are very overrated. Why don't they make complex heroes AND villains? Worked well enough for Lion King, Aladdin, and Hunchback. I feel like they either need to balance the heroes and villains so that they're BOTH interesting or just scrap the villains all together. The only 10/10 animated Disney movies for me in the past 12 years are Winnie the Pooh, Inside Out, and Finding Dory. Ironically, NONE of them had a villain. And the same can be said for the MCU. The only ones I feel are GREAT are the Avengers films and the Captain America sequels. The main issues I have for the rest of the MCU movies are that they're just starting to feel the same, and especially because the villains are just shoved off to the side and axed off very quickly. Why can't they just make BOTH the villain and hero awesome? Movies had done that very well before.
@Lauren_210
@Lauren_210 5 жыл бұрын
Modern Disney films need to take notes from Disney Renaissance films. A majority of their films from that era had that perfect balance of complex heroes and villains and we were able to enjoy and love the good guys and bad guys easily (i.e. Simba/Scar, Aladdin/Jafar, Belle/Beast/Gaston, Ariel/Ursula, Quasimodo/Frollo, etc.) Another thing about Disney films that I miss...epic final battles. Again, Disney Renaissance films had some of the best final battles at the end of their films between the hero and villain (my favorites being the one between Simba and Scar, Beast and Gaston, Aladdin and Jafar, and Tarzan and Clayton). Even films pre-Renaissance like The Great Mouse Detective, Snow White, or Sleeping Beauty had awesome final battles. The fight between Ralph and King Candy was cool but it was more of a joke rather than scary compared to something like the fight between Quasimodo and Frollo. I know we've kinda had some today in films like Moana and Wreck-It Ralph, but they're not as stylistic as the ones we used to get and the fights used to be a lot more intense and scary at times. Anna punching Hans in the face and falling off a boat like in a Saturday morning cartoon?...LAME.

Though it would have worked even better if in the Turbo flashback Turbo's voice was chiptuned and glitchy instead of being exactly like King Candy, because people with good of hearing can catch that and ruin the twist. Other than that , you're right he's the only Twist vilain that works because the twist isn't that Turbo/King Candy is a vilain and his personality remains the same throughout the movie from his introduction to the "reveal"

I unraveled the twist of Wreck it Ralph in the first three minutes after seeing *SPOILERS* Vanellope on the side of the Sugar Rush cabinet. Which made me think "if she's a glitch, i.e. something that's not meant to be in the game, why is she on the official artwork?" Then once Turbo was introduced as a concept I immediately realized that he was King Candy in disguise. Not at all saying it was obvious. I just happened to be paying attention to the one thing that gave it all a way. Which I think may have been intentional.
@MrStrikecentral
@MrStrikecentral 7 жыл бұрын
Vanellope being on the arcade cabinet could have easily been because she was an unfinished character that was scrapped way late in Sugar Rush's development and the developers simply overlooked the cabinet design and forgot she was on there. Stuff like that's happened before. Also, Diet Cola Mountain (where she lives) was part of an unfinished bonus track that still exists in the game, but is locked off and normally unaccessible. This further cements the idea that she's not so much of a glitch as she is an unfinished character.

One of my favorite villians from the newer Disney movies has to be Deputy Mayor Bellwether. She plays the part of the unknown villian well, and at times throughout Zootopia she seems a bit too nice about her placement. She gets berated and yelled at a lot by Mayor Leodore Lionhart, but you never once see her challenge it. Its only near the end when we find out that she was behind the predator animals going savage, but was also leading Nick and Judy into thinking Mayor Lionhart was part of it. Bellwether is a prime example of the best kind of bad guy. Sure the loud and agressive ones draw your attention and make you assume who they are, but its the quite and often overly friendly ones ones in the backgound that should be watched out for; because they usually have other motives.

Hans is such a sloppy and divided mess of a character I struggle to even call him one character. CinamaSins did a really quick and effective rundown of why he doesn't work. But the sad part is, he COULD'VE worked. He said he was the last in a long line of sons. What if all the other brothers saved a princess and "lived happily ever after" and that's what he wanted? And when Anna started falling for Kristoff instead, he got desperate to try and keep her, and keep his happy ending? It would have fir with the message of trying to build on old stories without having to make such a nonsensical twist.

(Maleficent=Dead, Evil Queen=Dead, Jafar=Trapped in a lamp AS A GENIE, and idk what happened to Cruella deville, I haven't seen 101 dalmations). 2. Even if they did manage to survive, why would anyone want to be in a relationship with them and have kids? 3. Why the heck do all classic Disney characters need to have kids anyway?! The whole concept sounds like a fan fiction idea. Now, I haven't seen Decendants 2 or the entire first one tbh, but those were just some of the things that bothered me from what I DID watch. I kinda wish I had more evidence to go off of, but I honestly didn't care enough to watch those movies because i just wasn't interested in them

In my opinions, the reason why the old Disney villains were great was because the heroes were bland. Modern Disney heroes have more charisma and chemistry that the villains are overlooked. But let's face it, if most of the villains in the old days appear in the modern era, they would just be viewed as generic, mustache-twirling villains (with the exceptions of Hades, Frollo, Shan Yu, and Scar).

Considering some of the finest villains come already from the era that heroes were made less bland I think that really does not affect it as much. A huge factor is that Disney's stories have evolved where the antagonists don't need to take the form of a physical villain. Many stories now include society or the self as an antagonist where the protagonist's search for himself is the central conflict. Elsa vs accepting her powers, Ralph vs his identity as as villain. Hopps and Wilde vs systemic barriers that undervalue them. Joy vs Riley growing up. These are the true main conflicts, while the physical villain is a path to overcoming them. Villains are less iconic because they are much less central to the story

Simple: They made them funny. Old Disney films weren't comedies. They were fucked up cautionary tales that MIGHT have some comic relief. I think it would be a stretch to call even Hercules a comedy, considering about half of the film takes place in HELL. Frolo sings about struggling with his lustful impulses, but what do modern Disney villains do? Not that. Villains remain in the public consciousness because they are terrible, horrible people, and we remember what they do. As soon as we start laughing at the villain because he got hit in the balls, they lose all impact and terror.

Yet another brilliant analysis. However, I did have a couple of thoughts you didn't bring up. Heroes in older Disney films were blander, but I think that was better in some ways, as it made it easier for the viewer to insert themselves in the place of the hero. Modern heroes are well defined characters, but if they're not LIKE me, I find it harder to imagine myself in his place. Also, villains in the old days seemed to be far more powerful. A villain like Maleficent wasn't going to be dismissed by an arbitrary backhand and fall comically over a ledge. Jafar had awesome physical power, and couldn't be easily overpowered as a result. Modern villains are more ordinary, and less often a direct physical threat (especially when there's no physical villain, as when the challenge to the hero is to overcome his own limitations), and as such seem far less frightening or evil.

If Disney wants us to get the message of the film and decides to put a villain in it then it would be better for the villain to be a strong one like in the old days. The best villains act as contrasts to a main character while initially being mirrors. Jaffar lies to get what he wants, Alladin lies to get what he wants but has good intentions. At the beginning a Beauty and the Beast, Beast and Gaston are both ill mannered assholes but only Beast manages to change. This is ESPECIALLY true in the Lion King where I Just Can't Wait To Be King and Be Prepared are basically the same song where the main difference is that one is saying it because he's a kid that doesn't know what he's talking about and the other knows everything the song entails and should have grown out of it by now. In each case the villain acts as the other half of the message and without them being as strong, and even dominating, as they used to be that message can be largely lost. The message if Frozen was . . . Well the movie was a bit of a mess on that end. Nice animation, nice songs, not much else. Bellwether wasn't much better but what the world became before the final act acted as a supplementary villain and made things okay. To send a message you need a good balance of villain and hero. And both have to be strong.

in my opinion the villains in the past are much more sadistic and talk like psychopaths for example scar he was portrayed being very passive aggressive towards simba and lying to simba about a gift leading to his fathers death and then tells simba to run knowing that he did it.

Does Bill Cipher count as a Disney villain? Sure, Gravity Falls was a television series, but it was still owned by Disney. Either way, for what little time we actually had with him, he was disturbing, funny, quotable, memorable, and sinister in every way. He's the perfect villain.

Great video! Definitely brought up a point I hadn't considered and explained it well. I'd like to offer one defense for these villains though, and that's that seeing their character before their personality changes to that of the villain allows us a better look at what drives them and how they interact with the people they oppose in a way that goes beyond "obstacle to beat at the end". Obviously the tradeoff you mentioned still exists, but I think this is a nice benefit that went unmentioned.

Also Lord Dominator from Wander Over Yonder. An absolutely despicable villain, who conquers and destroys worlds and civilizations purely because it's "magic" to "watch a planet shrivel up and die". "A villain acts, a hero reacts." This phrase by itself tells why disney villains are not as good now. Regardless of things, i think that villains should remain a important part of a story. They move the story foward. Disney forgot that there is absolutely no problem in revealing that a villain is a villain from the start. He can have quick exposition about his past or something to show us why he is that way (even if i think it's not needed). A good villain does not need to be relatable. That's only a single part of a huge spectrum of what makes a good villain. A villain that feels real is great. A villain that is understandable is good. A villain that is relatable is also good. But if you make a villain none of those, but keep him INTERESTING to watch, he will be just as good if not better. But that's just my 2 cents.
@Samaru163

I completely agree. There's a reason why Maleficent is usually ranked as people's favourite Disney villain; even though she isn't relatable in the slightest, she creates so much conflict in her film and is so entertaining with how elegant and evil she is. Or how about Ursula? Her motivation is just to obtain power, but her personality is a mixture of a drama queen and a saleswoman, resulting in an unforgettable character. And sometimes that is all that's needed to make a great villain: character. Where a lot of modern Disney villains fall short is that they don't really have character to them, and instead come across as just obligatory obstacles for the film.

exactly I feel down the line Disney switched the two before it was bland hero interesting villian now it's bland villian interesting hero. What they don't realize is its been proven a movie can still be successful with a bland hero (sleeping beauty , cinderella, snow white, etc..) but it cannot be successful with a bland villian. its kind of odd that they fixed the problem by making both the villian and the hero interesting with a personality ( little mermaid, Aladdin, lion king etc..) then ruined it again. especially since around that time they were making hit after hit.
@Doomsday-yo7lh
@Doomsday-yo7lh 7 жыл бұрын
To be fair, they didn't really have to focus much on story in the times of Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. All they really had to do was make it look nice and people would flock to watch it. Back then, that's all people really watched animated movies for. The pretty pictures. So the heroes weren't great and as a result the movies don't exactly hold up story-wise.
@lelelew2735
@lelelew2735 7 жыл бұрын
true but the movies were still successful when I was a kid even now sleeping beauty was one of the top movies i liked. there is a reason new generations like them and it can't just be because of the scenery especially since we're used to that now. it is the story that keeps us interested and the villian. otherwise we would be bored and not get through the whole movie.to be honest the only movie I think they just made to look pretty was snow white and that's because the story doesn't make any sense .but with Cinderella and sleeping beauty the story was pretty clear. all I know is movies can be good with a bland hero as long as you have a interesting villian. idk for sure the reason why that is but my theory is as people were naturally curious and we will keep watching to figure something that's a mystery. villians back then were a mystery now it just seems they try to hard to make everyone relatable telling every little detail about the characters life and backstory. atleast then even tho the heros were under developed they were more of a mystery and you kept watching to see what they would do next. now with back stories your not sure whether to dislike the villian or to see them as a victim,and you know every detail and personality traits of the heros to the point that they become predictable.

This was amazingly well done. Excellent work Doug. I love how you don't just make a point and whine about why things have changed, but you really dig into why things are different now than they were before. In terms of the villain twist, how about this as an idea: The person we thought was the villain turns out to be a good guy doing things for noble purposes the entire time, and the hero was either tricked into fighting them, or is actually trying to take over for their own selfish interests? I think that would be a very interesting idea.
@johnking9943

That's one of the best types of villains out there: the well-intentioned extremist. In this day and age, everyone is considered the 'hero' of their own story. By that logic, the villain twist could also work by introducing two sides: both sides have noble goals, but while one side goes about achieving these goals with moral choices and actions, the other side attempts to achieve the same noble goals through villanous actions. The best film to show this (and it is technically Disney, since Disney bought the rights to Marvel) is Black Panther. Both the hero and villain of that movie have a very noble goal; to stop persecution and discrimination. But where Black Panther achieves these goals through protecting the innocent and working through diplomacy with other nations, the villain Killmonger just wants to fight and murder everyone that he considers 'guilty' of past sins. Both sides have good intentions, but both have very different means of accomplishing these goals, and both have screentime devoted to why they have come to the conclusion that their way is the way that will work. I understood T'Challa and wanted to see him succeed, yet I also understood Killmonger and knew why he did what he does in the movie. It's villains like Killmonger that we look to in the modern era, just as we looked to villains like Maleficent or Ursula. Sorry if this went on for a bit. Thank you for reading.

I know Doug was making a point when comparing Hans and Stinky Pete. My one criticism of the comparison is that Stinky Pete's character change makes a little more sense than Han's sudden change. Stinky Pete had a grudge that he had held onto and as this collection grew he was hopeful of being recognized, especially when Woody was found and he was finally going to get what he wanted. Woody being Woody tried getting back to Andy so Stinky Pete interfered. When all seemed to be set in stone, the other toys arrive and Woody begins changing the minds of Jesse and Bullseye is when Stinky Pete has had enough, showcasing his resentment and grudge. To me it felt more fleshed out than what Doug was saying.

The thing is that she was the villain for 5 minutes. In a Hardy Boys mystery, the boys usually think this guy is a good guy, but then he slowly shows himself to be rather evil. Read any good Hardy Boys story and you'll find one twist villain, and they usually find clues that show them as evil.

If Hans never captured her she would have stayed in the castle forever. What did she get bored one day and decide to come back. What a silly thing to say.
