The Michael Shermer Show # 431
Nellie Bowles, co-founder of The Free Press (and formerly an award-winning journalist at The New York Times), talks about the meteoric rise of her media company, which is on the verge of reaching 1 million subscribers just two years after its launch. She also shares insights about the seismic cultural shifts of the past few years.
It’s a different, more nuanced perspective than typically heard, and very much worth listening to.

in response to Michael's point at roughly the one hour six minute mark on gender identity is something that blew my mind recently, I was listening to a Robert Sapolsky talk about transgender neurobiology, where he said that men can have a small amount of neurons with the female chromosomes in their brains from the interaction during developmental process as a fetus with their mothers, furthermore that there are some specific conditions that can cause alternative chromosomes to be expressed specifically in the brain than the rest of the body, he went on to say that this can be the case in some people who feel like they're the "wrong gender".. I'm no expert, but I've found Sapolsky to be trustworthy, anyways food for thought, definitely worth a watch.. actually one more tidbit, I was watching another podcast this-morning with David Liu, where he was talking about the future of gene editing, where he said that most people think of the genome as a single pattern shared by every cell in the body, but that it was actually closer to billion of variations of the code, due to the scale and frequency of mutation.. I think it was billions, anyways

MS: I do have a question on the data itself. I'm going to ask Jonathan about this when he comes on next week is . . I think it's an open question that is to say how big is that spike really. What if some of it is a not just an expansion of the category of depression or anxiety or whatever, so you throw more people in that bin but also some of it is self-fulfilling . . . I think Jonathan says it's not just redefining what depression is because the behavioral curves, like hospitalizations, match the self-reporting curves. Read your article on TGIF on attending that DEI course. I found it disturbing but you put it out there without comment, so I wasn’t sure what you were saying. Really enjoying this interview.

I really learned a lot from this interview. Nellie I’m a newbie to TGIF (Free Press) and have been a little confused in spite of my enjoyment of your column. I’ve got your book on order, and I feel comfortable now to disagree or have a conversation with you if you actually have a forum for discussion somewhere.

Long long ago....I can't imagine a journalist ever directly revealing their own candidate preference. Enjoyed listening to her, but was taken aback when she giddily "squealed" her enthusiasm for a presidential candidate from a few years ago. Morley Safer spoke at my school in the 1970's, revealing that he never voted, in any elections, state or federal.

Nellie has accepted the common idea that gender is only or merely a social construct and can therefore be changed. This is a misunderstanding. Gender is shown in other species that have no culture. Gender is very much a product of biology, even if the superficial expression is shaped by culture. Every trans person I have known has steadfastly insisted that they have no choice about their gender. There would be no trans if gender were a choice. The biggest confusion by trans activists is the foolish idea that a trans person is no different, and should be treated exactly the same as a biological woman or man. That's an absurd denial of reality.
