Koko was born in 1971 in San Francisco Zoo. She was taken care by Francine Patterson who was also her teaching instructor. During her life, Koko learned 1000+ signs which puts her vocabulary at the level of a 3 year old. She even scored 70 to 90 on infant IQ scales.
Koko once adopted a small kitten as a pet and named him 'All Ball', revealing she could rhyme. One day the cat suddenly died in an accident. Upon hearing, Koko signed 'cry' 'bad' 'frown' 'sad'. These events made her an international celebrity.
Koko's behavior also revealed her deep emotions which were similar to those of humans. At the age of 46, on June 19, 2018, Koko died in her sleep during the morning. She taught us about the emotional capacity of Gorillas and will inspire many generations to come.
