For me, the reason she lost my interest was she went from being a person who was funny and HAPPENED to be a woman of color, to "hey laugh at my jokes BECAUSE I'm a bi woman of color and if you don't like my stuff it's cause you're a bigot." The moment you weaponize your identity, that's when you've lost.

This is exactly it, once she came out literally all of her jokes were about her being gay and a person of color in a way that implied if you didn’t find it funny you were a bigot, and that rubbed me the wrong way so I stopped following

Heres the reality: her comedy was largely reliant on typical youtube schticks like jumpcuts and bombastic ways of acting and speaking as well as her audience being younger. Her transition to late night was doomed to fail because her brand of comedy doesnt appeal to older audiences who are the primary viewing demographic of late night tv. And her making her Sexuality and skin color her entire identity added salt to the wounds. And her follow up TED talk pushing all accountability onto sexism and racism instead of recognizing where she went wrong. It was something that was never going to succeed.

There are many talk show hosts that started life as children's show hosts. Particularly in the UK, many of the high profile hosts started as childrens TV hosts. Thats partly how they train new young staff, they start in Childrens shows, they build experience and confidence then move to adult shows. I dont buy all the excuses. Lilly sucked because people didnt like her, she didnt seem genuine, and it didnt help she was pushing woke stuff. Most shows pushing woke stuff fail, even minorities and women dont like watching it. As usual there is always someone else to blame when a woman or minority fails at her job.

Lilly really did fall from grace hard. People can sense when someone isn’t genuine. When you build your fan base by simply being yourself, they’re going to notice when your brand suddenly becomes corporate. Lilly was already becoming more of a corporate brand before the talk show, but the second she walked out on that stage looking like a 19th century school teacher and cracking jokes that that would only belong on a 90s sitcom (and did, in fact require heavy use of a laugh track) everyone knew that genuine Lilly was gone. She didn’t do anything to deserve some of the hate she got, but I think people were surprised and disappointed. I hope that whatever she does in the future, she can do it while being herself.

I agree. I feel like even years and years ago her comedy was always very juvenile or focused on race/stereotypes a lot. So I’m not shocked her first tv apology was for a culturally insensitive joke. That’s literally her “type” of comedy and her apology seemed fake when she tried to make it seem like this was the first time she had done a joke like that. But even without that, her show was doomed from the start. No late night host is successful if their target demographic is in bed by 8pm. Her over the top, childish skits just aren’t funny to most adults. Even in that clip of her saying how happy she was about the season bc they could have serious topics one day and then a skit about a dr giving butt implants using cabbage (or something like that), no adult wants to watch those type of skits. It’s dumb kid humor. I think she should’ve known better then to take the gig. I’m sure she made good money but at what cost?

Her comedy couldn't really translate well to a late-night show since those kinds of shows have a different format compared to her regular videos. And it was ridiculous how they had her team write opening monologues about "current events" but filmed several months prior to airing. And IMO they tokenized tf out of her. It wasn't her idea to constantly talk about how she was a "bisexual woman of color". Networks ruin shows all the time because they want something new and fresh for their lineup, but have no clue what or why the audience is watching and even when they get a gem in their hands (like Firefly for example) the network execs can still fuck it all up with how they release the show and what timeslot they give it

Sure, she wouldn't have complete control over her show and the studio definitely could have done better but she knew what she was getting into (at least to some extent) when she signed the contract. There would've been talks about the kind of comedy they expected of her, she would've known about the tight filming schedule, the filming in advance, etc. and she still signed on to that concept. If people from outside the entertainment world could see the issues with this approach, she should've been more than aware of everything you mentioned in this video, and she still decided to do it. For that alone she shares some of the responsibility for the failure of the show.

She is one of the many creators who failed to adapt to their changing audience. They stuck with what worked but when the audience aged out, all of a sudden the public is the problem for her projects not taking off. A late night show was the last thing she should’ve done to rebrand.

what brittany said was so true about how the young generations don't watch late night tv shows like that at all. the only time we do, is if someone we like is going to be on. i'm a huge billie fan and any single interview she does, i'll show up front an centered 🧘🏼‍♀️ lol but i could careless about any of the other episodes on those shows.

I also only watch these shows when they pop up in my YT feed or a segment acts like a brain worm and is stuck in my head. Then I might fall into a rabbit hole for the night but the next morning I'm back to the usual.

I think the only times I watch anything of late night TV(or TV at all tbh) is if a celeb I like is doing an interview or if a funny clip gets on my feed. I don't think any people younger than 40 has it any different lol

I definitely felt she was set up for failure! Even from the very beginning by choosing her to host a late night show when her audience is mainly children to young teenagers. I think if she hosted a show that was like American’s funniest home videos or even a late night show that was more for kids, she would have shined.

I don't think her "failure" was related to her late night show, although it was cringy and definitely not up to her talent and abilities. I remember watching her videos and slowly growing more and more detached to her, but not only because i was growing up (I never felt this way about Dan and Phil or many others for example although my interests shifted the more time passed). I felt like she wasn't as genuine in front of the camera anymore, she was trying too hard on youtube as well, the format was old and she wasn't moving on and adapting like other youtubers were (Jenna Marbles for example). I remember at some point her videos just felt different, and i just don't think she was able to ride the wave. I feel like online, calculating and studying the media and the viewers is great, but when you do it too much it feels like everything you're putting out is to please someone that are just statistics and not real people who love being entertained by you.

She never should have taken the gig. She should have been self aware enough to know her humor is for kids and way too wholesome for late night. I don’t know why some KZfaqrs so badly want to do TV when they’ve found success having complete creative control on KZfaq. As soon as I saw she was going to do that show, I could not see how it could ever be a success. Someone looked at some numbers and made an ill informed decision making that offer.

I remember as a kid I used to look up to her work ethic and took inspiration from her. She was a good role model to have in my opinion. But some years later and she starts to use her identity as a shield and sword to critics. I think there is nothing wrong with identifying discrimination that may come from who you are, but it really felt like a constant defensive mechanism for her. It really dropped my interest for her when she started accusing people of being racist, sexist, and homophobic from left and right if they shared their dislike for her

I don't think putting all the blame onto NBC is correct. Lilly deserves the lion's share of the blame and judging by her TED Talk, it's clear she's not ready to learn from her mistakes. Someone who can't look in the mirror and judge themselves fairly is someone who is destined to repeat the same mistakes again.

I use to LOVE watching her videos and vlogs!! But I fell off watching because she really started to change her content (at least how I felt). Then I remember she did a video where she said she was constantly getting comments about how her videos and herself have changed. She said it in her video that of course she’s going change and I remember thinking oh she’s right of course her content will change over time but it just felt off. Like everyone is saying; she just didn’t feel genuine anymore which what I loved about her in the first place. The videos she made were about her and stories about her life. Then I just all became content about ‘the brand’.

my opinion of her, i watched her in the EARLY days, 2010-2013 ish ? The second she got relatively famous, she no longer felt genuine. It went from a genuine comedian to someone saying “if you don’t like me it’s because you’re racist and homophobic” like whattt 😅 I haven’t seen much from her since 2013 unless it’s her being whiney about something. Really disappointing to see a woman who could have done SO MUCH with comedy, yet she just did nothing of real substance.

I was a big BIG Lilly fan, I still am a fan, a decent one. Reason I think for her failure is because she made it all about herself, it kinda worked for her KZfaq but not for a talk night show. And, I think she takes things a little longer that it should, goes on blaming her upbringing, her brown Indian parents for basically everything bad in her life. I get it, it's hard to catch up to a progressive society when you come from a conservative one but there must be a limit to blame others. Her values knows no boundaries, she goes to extreme of all her values, be it feminism, womanhood, friendship, being bi, being brown and etc. Her fans cheered for all her opinions, be it good or bad they always backed her up but that won't work in real world. I find it difficult to process the fact that I have to talk so much against my favorite person but this is a reality. No more hiding reality.
