I feel like preteen era ended in 2017-2020s. Jojo siwa era was still “in” 2014-2016. I don’t really think it’s the kardashians who changed the preteen era cause the show aired in 07 and preteen stuff started to decline around 2012-2016. It was moreso social media itself and how internet culture changed everything. IG, TikTok, etc

When I was a tween, I spent all my time on the Barbie and Disney channel websites-today, both of those sites are targeted to parents looking to buy stuff and little kids respectively. My little sister spent HER tween years on tiktok :(

You're so right. There is an agenda to blur the line between childhood and adulthood and no one can tell me any different. Not only do young people watch more adult and hyper sexual content but it seems the "cynic ironic" stage you'd expect from a say seventeen year old starts younger and younger for some kids. Also in mainstream pop culture yes there has always been adult and sexual media but it's like there is an agenda to make mainstream culture as hyper sexualized as possible and they know that millions of young girls watch this stuff. It disgusts me so much...

i wish i was born in like idfk 1999 to experience shopping at limited too. i am born on 2004 and only went to justice to buy a monster high doll and a few shirts..now; i usually shopped at the childrens place when i was a little kid. now in 2023, walmart sells justice clothes 😔

I'd always manage to find their stuff at thrift stores. I don't know how, but I remember that distinctly. I don't even know if we had a store in my area. If we did, it was probably in the mall farther away from me, but frankly, I only went there because it had Toys R Us and Build A Bear.

Especially since those of us who listed after Limited Too (🙋‍♀️) are getting to the age where our children would’ve been their demographic. If they want to cash in on nostalgia and make tweens happy, they could easily bring it back imo. Same with Delia’s.

The thing is...I think tweens nowadays don't want to look like a tween. One day I go to mall with my 10 yo niece because she got a good score at math test so I'm gonna give her some treat. I see this cute T-shirt with big teddy bear in the front and I said If she likes it I will buy it for her. And she said it was too childish 🤣. In the end she choose a plain jeans jacket because her Kpop idol look cool with that. I mean nothing wrong with that, but social media really make kids growing up too fast :")

@@thomasina6623 Especially with this days age of nostalgia for the 2000's and how the 90's is vintage now (*cringes in old*) I feel like a comeback with modifications would do well. Namely, the sizing and bringing back the fun. Heck, honestly if they made a line for the adults who used to shop there as kids, that'd be fun too. Stores like Hot Topic are still thriving cause they adapted to the ages.

The Babysitters Club was a good TV show for tweens, I hope to see more shows like that come out

Another 30 year old here too! 👋 It’s funny cause I was just commenting on how laughable the fashion was at that time, but a lot of it did make sense as it was a new millennium and fashion tried to get futuristic in it. The thing is, I think we were blessed at that time to be preteens, it was the perfect age to pull off those tacky outfits and we were youthful enough to not look silly like those in their 20’s did. I will say, I think what is missing is that fashion experiment of having different opinions of material besides just cotton. Think it might help if there were pops of different materials that wasn’t tacky but had a purpose to the design. Yet something easier for the materials to be washed too as that’s likely why some of those trends never staid lol 😆

Just thought to myself “wow, a 30 year old and I have similarities!?” Then I age checked myself and remembered that I’m 25 and not 20 anymore… good god make it stop 🤣

I miss my childhood

They certainly were for me! I LOVED the American Girl doll catalogues. I used to read through the whole thing and look at the prices of what I wanted so I knew how much money I’d have to save for certain accessories. Also, before social media I’d read up on tween/teen celebrities in magazines. I grew up taping the posters I took out of Tiger Beat magazine onto my walls and taking those cheesy love quizzes with friends. Magazines and catalogues definitely had an influence on what I thought was trendy or cool at the time.

For sure! I spent SO MUCH time going through the catalogs and circling things I wanted. Then I’d day dream about how cool I’d look in all those clothes my mom wasn’t gonna buy for me 😂

Wow. Talk about close to home! I definitely remember Limited Too from my childhood, and seeing how bright and fun the stores looked. Since I'm transgender, I didn't get to experience girlhood, so I looked at it from the sidelines and felt jealous at what the girls got to have. As a young adult, while still pre-transition albeit gender-questioning, I actually thought about applying to work at a Justice store (that was previously a Limited Too location). At least as an adult, I finally feel free to shop at whatever adult store I want to, regardless of gender. I'm pretty conservative fashion-wise, but some of that stems from the style of some of my favorite women's stores; think along the lines of WHBM or Ann Taylor here, with the former being my favorite (I've yet to purchase an Ann Taylor item, but their style resonates with me). The Limited (the adult women's store from which Limited Too originally spun off from) would have also been among one of these stores if it still existed. I'll note that these particular stores are often known for catering to career women, but I find a certain mix of androgyny and sophistication in professional women's clothing that matches well with my internal sense of gender identity. Not all the clothes in those stores are "boring" professional clothes though; WHBM has some pretty stylish stuff that can easily be worn casually.

I think me being bigger than a lot of tween girls is why my mom didn't want me to shop there. I forget what her excuse was, but I'm sure my size was the reason. With plus size seeming to be the norm in the US, it's no surprise that bigger people have options now.

Same I was tall and bigger I already had breasts in elementary I HATED these stores I wasn’t medically obese or anything but these stores made me hate femininity since I didn’t fit so I felt like less of a girl.

I loved club Libby Lu days! I still have a backpack from there that says “At Club Libby Lu, girls rock,” but it looks dirty from makeup so I have to clean it. I used to have a Hannah Montana wig and mermaid brown curly hair extensions to add to your hair in an updo but I regrettably threw them away bc they were so tangly 😭. I miss that stuff, although I felt the wig didn’t suit me lolol I would’ve gladly never thrown those away if I could get those back but it’s ok.

@@cantsay2205 In a way it changed to how it used to be some generations ago. Up until shortly after WWII the concept of teens or tweens didn't really exist. There were special clothes for small children and everyone one else wore miniature versions of modest adult clothes. I have some old family pictures of someone's confirmation party and it's almost impossible to tell the adults from the teens (13-14).

I mentioned it in my comment, but I had a Limited Too employee, when I asked about a dress I wanted to try on, take one look at me, scoff and say "Oh honey, we don't make clothes for YOU" and SNATCHED IT OUT OF MY HANDS and told me to get out of the store. My mom was furious. I was 11 and not feeling well from getting my first period so she had wanted to do something to cheer me up and THIS was how I got treated. We went to Justice and Hot Topic. Had my goth awakening and never wore the cute trendy clothes I used to love again.

You're definitely correct about "tween" fashion and why it doesn't really seem to be a thing today. I was definitely a tween in the early-2000s, I just wasn't a girl so I didn't get to get all the fun stuff. Needless to say, I was so jealous of the girls who got to shop at Limited Too! Even though I didn't get to experience it as a kid, I felt that same kind of rush the first time I got to try on and purchase women's clothing. This was in the mid-2010s, and Forever 21 and H&M were my go-to brands then. By the late-2010s, my fashion tastes quickly matured beyond these fast-fashion brands, and WHBM became my new go-to brand (and has remained such ever sense).
