Ah yes, the same committee that gave the likes of Kanye West and Nine Inch Nails multiple nominations but apparently thought My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and The Downward Spiral weren’t good enough for AOTY, and to really make me rage let us also not forget the whopping 0 nominations My Chemical Romance has, fuck them, I should just ignore them but they still find ways to piss me off

Macklemore shouldn't have to apologize for something that was the academy's doing. People also shouldn't be trying to take the magical moment away from him just because he is a white rapper that won in the Rap Album category. Being black and a hip hop fan I totally understand and feel that the cultural significance of rap in the black cimmunity is important and deserves to be more recognized for what it brings to the table in the music industry. There were better artists on that roster, for sure. I , however, respect Macklemore for having the humility to show some respect for black rap artists who work hard in the industry and realize that he may never have the same kind of connection to the genre as black artists usually do in terms of our culture. He also deserves to enjoy his win since he and Lewis worked hard, too for people who were relatively new compared to all the other artists at the Grammy's. Critics should have left them alone.

Makelmore is still making music and is out there. Just because people are not always in the forefront doesn't mean they are not longer successful. I think this is a very nuanced topic. Roger Niles isn't non successful anymore because he isn't getting hits. Sucess isn't always about mass numbers. Commercial success isn't the only form of success
@ginandromeda1618
@ginandromeda1618 3 жыл бұрын
I do think it's a very nuanced topic as well! I feel like it all comes to how the artists define their own success and what their goals are. Which is one of the reasons why I don't like when someone patronizingly says "xyz flopped" just because they're not in the charts anymore doesn't mean they're not out there pouring their heart out in the music they do and performing shows in little venues for the people that feel emotionally connected to them. The internet has given us more control on making people successful, so charts and awards shouldn't be the only way to measure music success, heck maybe even the Grammys could become obsolete and stop being seen as this "highest peak in the music industry" in a couple of decades looking at how more artists are giving the Academy less merit each year.

There is so much more to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis than people realize. Their album was so good, it wasn't just corny music but there was such a significant message in each song. Till this day Neon Cathedral is still my favorite song.

The fact that people bashed and bullied Rebecca Black in the 2010s despite "Friday" having more sensible lyrics than Ylvis' "What Does the Fox Say" is beyond me.
@khfan6864
@khfan6864 3 жыл бұрын
I think a reason aside from the vocals (both weren't very great) was that everyone saw Friday as a song that wanted to be taken seriously, while What Does the Fox Say didn't really hide it's intention to be more of a parody than anything else. That's at least what most of the people I know said about this topic. I also prefer What does the fox say over Friday, but to this day I'm still disgusted by all these people hating Rebecca Black and bullying her. She didn't deserve all of this just because her song wasn't something certain people wanted, but that sadly happens when you give people the power to hide behind a username... Hope she is okay and that she doesn't suffer from it still...

As a black man (not speaking for everyone to be clear), white privilege II made me respect Macklemore immensely, much more on a personal level than any other white rapper. Who else has openly acknowledged that their success is predicated on a system of oppression? I don’t find his serious stuff to be overly melodramatic to me, maybe it’s because I understand that rap should never be criticized for being political, it’s a forum for black thought of all kind, and if the Mack has acknowledged that it’s not his forum to run or be on top of, then by all means I wanna keep hearing what he’s got to say. He’s hit on issues close to me, and close to many others near to me, he’s a decent rapper, and the only backlash I’ve seen him receive is over things he can’t control, or had no part in or nitpicks in his wording. Just seems like much ado about a guy who’s made some strong statements. It always felt like a leak over from the more irrational side whenever I heard people talking smack

I grew up in Seattle, graduated high school in 2009, I knew of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis when they were local, they did their concerts at small venues, parks, an all day sound session with KEXP Radio, shoutouts to KJR radio and they performed at countless Mariner games, especially performing their hit “My Oh My” on the pitchers mound after Our beloved Mariner game announcer Dave Niehaus passed away. I went to a few of their small concerts, I was at all the Mariner games they performed at. I wasn’t a diehard fan or obsessed before they were famous, I just liked that they were local and had relatable music that was easy to listen to. They weren’t big shots yet. Then Thrift Shop happened. The Heist was released. My favorite tracks were White Walls and Cowboy Boots. I went to the final concert night of 2012 at the Key Arena, saw them LIVE. And all of a sudden they got BIG. Really BIG. Nation wide tours, then Canada and UK, then Europe and Asia. Finally they did a second album but it didn’t fare well to my liking, the love was gone and it was all about the money. Mack got bad haircuts and relapsed back to popping pills and heroin while his wife and daughter waited his return to their Seattle home, but between rehab stays Mack continued to travel world wide for concerts and fame and money. He didn’t care about making good music or sharing great words for other to listen to, he only wanted the money and the drugs to fuel his habits. Now he has 2 kids and is staying at home more bc of the pandemic, but I certainly hope he doesn’t do anymore big concert tours bc he is so old news. Macklemore’s first 2 independent albums were great, awesome. The Heist was his goldrush to fame. It was a great album, but every song after that was total toilet water and didn’t deserve to be played. He sold out. I hope he stays quiet for the rest of his “whatever career” that he has left.
