Ah, thanks for this. I didn't hop over to twitch as I was on such a downer after the song. Those of us with mental health battles need to really watch what we feed our ears. Music can be as destructive as it can be healing. I don't want to heard this again.

Yeah, I was wondering what the song was supposed to be about. It just sounds like a senseless glorification of murder, death, and destruction, with no redeeming or uplifting ending or conclusion. And for the fun of it, of all things. I agree with the person above who posted that we need to be careful what we feed our ears. For humans in general (not just those of us struggling with mental health), the subconscious is programmed through repetition + emotion. As artists, we need to be careful about what we put out into the world because it can impact people in unseen ways. Lyrics matter. And I say this as someone who really does love so much of Ren's work. But there are some darker influences in his sound that, if not kept in check, could work against his intended positive messages.

Ren said in his twitch stream, this song was written about 2 years ago after a setback and he was angry at the world. And he said the best way for him to get over these feelings is to express them. So he wrote this song and let the feelings go.

Yeah, if you are sensitive you can feel how it is sodden with negative energy. It might've been therapeutic to get it all out but I feel dumped on. Polluted. Ren should not be diluting his calibre by releasing everything he's ever penned. I'm not averse to dark - the trilogy covers murder, incest, AR and domestic abuse FFS, but that is done with artistry and maturity. This sounds like an adolescent rant. Albeit a clever and articulate kid, but it's not in the class that we know he is capable of. Knox's title to this reaction SAYS IT ALL.

@@admi1191I agree. I've written all kinds of stuff to let off steam and get my feelings out, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'd want to give it to the world. After songs are released, they have a mind and life of their own and we can't control how they are received or what impact they have on people. There's nothing wrong with writing dark stuff, but it is usually a little more palatable and beautiful when it's contrasted against the light. Imagine "Hi Ren" without the awe-inspiring and uplifting ending verses. It just wouldn't be the hit it is today without that gorgeous and real contrast between light and dark. You never want to take your listeners to the gates of hell and just leave them there to fend for themselves. That said, somebody did mention that the order of songs might be important here. Perhaps the album tells the story of Ren's journey and this is just the darkest chapter. 🤷🏻♀️

Norieverson agree I’m avoiding false positives in so far as I’m now in retreat and isolation. I’m beginning to accept it in here. It’s a concern to me however I have to survive this period and being cajoled, fucking silver linings, hope you are better, you look well! My head is screaming inside well that’s what steroids do, give a false an entirely false impression of what’s going on. Autoimmune diseases going off scale etc depression and broken femur when baseline mobility not good. Self protection to promote healing shouldn’t need to be retreat and withdrawal. 🎈🎈🎈

On Twitch, Ren said when he wrote Masochist he'd just come out of a "f'kn sh!t situation with the last people I was working with in the music business, so I was angry at everything and I thought I'd write that song (Masochist) and it made me feel better. Obviously it's not literal, I thought that maybe some people who were more religiously inclined might get upset about it but it's all sort of metaphors and it's all like my own journey and my own wrestling with spirituality when your body's been hurting for so many years, so that's where it comes from. It's not like being offensive to be offensive, it comes from a place of doubting your purpose if your in pain all the time. So that verse comes from there, cause I know some people will probably take it literally, as a face value: 'kill your mother, kill your father'; all that sort of stuff - it's just kind of cursing existing basically cursing the sheer act of beling alive, so in case anyone was wondering, that's why."

As a vet with 30 years PTSD experience I know well the darkest of places, walking the fine line between ending all or not - dealing with selfdestruction, insanity thoughts and lashing out at everyone around you. The burden of regrets building, cutting ties, isolation for comfort and risking everything dear to you. This presentation of Rens reminds me of it all in a very Charles Bukowski-ish manner. It`s hard but the awareness of it is a release giving relief.

I really love that ren can drop stuff like that! A major label would probably not take the risk of publishing stuff like that, but ren as a free artist can do what ever the fuck he's pleased with. This resonate with me so much more than with the shiny polished commercial music nowadays. Seriously, I'll take genuine negativity over fake positivity any day.

Loved your reaction Knox, did you get a pre-watch from Ren to get your reaction up so quick. Anyway, kudos to you. I love this track, it’s fantastic the way Ren is turning the idea of Hollowness into the Buddhist idea of Nothingness is genius. The idea of “killing your darlings” Arthur Quiller-Couch and William Faulkner styler; or the more modern interpretation “Kill the things you love” Stephen King or John Wick stylee. I loved the way he said ‘flow like Ocean’ sounding like he’s referencing Ko Kuei Chen (Chén Kèhuī) the scientist who led pharmacological research into ephedrine, steroids, venoms as therapy and cyanide poisoning; who was given the Remington Medal for excellence in pharmacy. Whilst also being a nod to Frank Ocean. Ren calling out the flat earther’s and coming for the church via pope, to kill the god ‘Jehovah’ or ‘the one on the cross’ to become your own godhead, then decapitating that too, thus be free of all earthly illusion. The idea of killing your current influences and philosophies in order to change, like a caterpillar metamorphosing into a butterfly, to sting like a Bee or “To Be or Not to Be” (Shakespeare). Gosh Ren got a lot into this track. Nods to the Police, EM, NWA, Nirvana.

Yet still there's that honest self-reflection and drive toward freedom that is unmistakably Ren. The flow switches and rhyme schemes in this song blow my mind. Hey Knox Have you considered making a reaction to Ren: Children of the Moon? When I hear you break down lyrics and interpret, I think that particular track would be interesting. Ren definitely has a darker side. Well, as he explained in Hi Ren, we all do. But Ren has learned to accept the eternal dance and found a way to master the steps: let it all out in his art. And what an outlet it is. All his frustrations and anger turned into word wizardry and he absolutely killed it on this track! Pretty sure the RENegades are ready to follow him into the depths of the rabbit hole even if he is swinging a knife around instead of playing the pipes 🐰 🕳️ 🗡️🐐 🐀🐀🐀🐀🐀

Ren has tapped into an insight of life(death) most havent realized; that all negative aspects of life is the soil from which virtue can flourish. Primary example: as humans, death begins as soon as we are born. The original soil… time.

Knox, I think you missed :"The butcher, the baker, "... from the rhyme: Rub-a-dub-dub, THREE MEN IN A TUB, [as mentioned by Ren in a previous song] And who do you think they be? The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker, And all of them out to sea. Also, "Kill the TINKER, kill the TAILOR, kill the SOLDIER" is part of John le Carré's famous spy novel title, 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'. Not sure what connection it has to anything by Ren though.

REN SAID HE WROTE THIS SONG WHEN HE WAS VERY ANGRY , AND HAD BEEN IN ALOT OF PAIN FOR A LONG TIME , HE ALSO MENTIONED THAT ANGER CAN SPILL OVER ON TO EVEN THE GOOD THINGS IN YOUR LIFE . Thank you, Knox, for catching so much and enjoying the hell out of music! I am proud to have caught something you didn't mention (which doesn't mean you didn't catch it) -- the repetition of Tick Tick Boom. Tick Tick Boom is a musical play written by Jonathan Larson, a major talent and next big thing who was struck down just before he got huge (he wrote Rent but died the day before it's first off-broadway preview). I can't help making the connection to Ren, the next big thing who has been sidelined, if not struck down, by illness just on the cusp of major success. When he was so sick he may not have been sure he'd have his "opening night". Also, Rent was about a bunch of non-conformists who lived on the edge and rejected a lot of society, another parallel to Ren and his band of musical merry pranksters. Maybe I'm reading WAY too much into it, but "Tick Tick Boom" is a pretty specific phrase. Anyways, thank you so much for another insightful analysis!
