You might have also pointed out that Brazil straddles the equator, which is represented by the white line with the motto. The single star above the motto represents the one province that is north of the equator.

Braganza Green and Habsburg Yellow. Paraná was added in the sense that it seceded from São Paulo, not a new territory that was annexed, I thought that could be made a tad more clear. It's also nice to remember that Positivism as a philosophy was dominant in the Army at the time and to an extent influenced the decision to have a coup. Interestingly enough these constellations are positioned as they were on the 15th of November 1889, the day of the coup, so not only it's place-specific, it's also time specific. The only State to be properly "annexed" and not cut out from other states is Acre, which was annexed in 1909 and turned into a state in the 1946 constitution. Another interesting fact is that each Star is directly connected to a state, the bigger the state in area, the bigger the star, for example, and the single Star above the "Ordem e Progresso" logo represents Amapá, the only state whose capital is north of the Equator. Also, I find it so funny how the Dutch almost can't remember colonising Brazil whilst Brazilians idolise the Maurits van Nassau era. Anyhow, I really liked the video. I really like your content, big fan, please take these comments as constructive or like "curiosity miscellanea" Keep up the good job!

Actually, the Brazilian republic's official name until the 1930's was United States of Brazil. I guess that was just a standard for federal republics at that time, considering Mexico, Central America and Argentina all used some form of a "united states" name.

Hello Hilbert. Not only is this one of the flags that stood out as looking especially attractive, when learning flags as a kid, but the way the colours were designed into one of the best looking football kits sort of ties in with your recent branching out in that direction. I expected you would mention it, if only to show an orange kit for comparison.

Of all the awful things the First Republic governments did, abandoning the Imperial flag for arguably the single ugliest copy of the Star Sprangled Banner was one of their many great disservices to the Nation, so much so it lead to a rare case of regretting the decision so much they designed the current flag out of the Imperial one.

Very good video! I follow you since a long time and it's very nice seeing you talking about my country! But some corrections are needed: 1 - In the very beginning you talk about the two Imperial flags, you accidentally changed the order and showed the later Imperial flag (with the Imperial Crown of Brazil) as if it was the first one. 2 - A mistake in the colors, the green represented the House of Bragança and the yellow the House of Habsburg in the Imperial Flag. (Their meaning in the Republic flag is changed for the nature and the riches, with the blue orb being the night sky of Rio de Janeiro during the proclamation of the Republic, with the PoV being from the space to the Earth.) 3 - The Dutch colony in Brazil was a short lived venture, they controlled part of the now Northeast states of Brazil (at the time, they were important centers of Brazil). It was a very interesting period and the portuguese reconquest had big repercussions for the history of the US too! 4 - One of the main reasons for the change to a more similar format to the Imperial Flag is that the leader of the republican coup, the Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca, was a monarchies and a personal friend of Dom Pedro II, and it's said that he wasn't a fan of the more US like flag. Overall, I really appreciate your video and hope to see more content about Brazil and the rest of the world in the future, thanks!

No, Dom Pedro First of Brazil, and Pedro Fourth of Portugal... the yellow one is from the Habsburgos, that is to say from the empress leopoldina, the green one is from the Braganças, that is to say from Dom Pedro l . And the first crown on the flag is the royal one, not the imperial one, as independence was proclaimed after Pedro I, in the name of his father King Dom João, later we adopted the imperial crown because Dom João said that Pedro would take the throne of Brazil for you, thus came the flag with the imperial crown..

6:30 Small correction since the way this was told could be misleading: It wasn't the entire territory of Brazil but some provinces in the Northeast of the country. This happened during the Iberian Union (1580-1640), when Brazil was controlled by the Spanish monarch, not fond of the Dutch (see Eighty Years War/Dutch Revolt), while Portugal and its colony used to be a comercial partner (sugar industry). The current administration going back on the agreements stablished between the colony of Brazil and Netherlands is what caused the invasion and brief colonization of a (small) part of the country during the Dutch-Portuguese War. Due to Brazil's large territory not being really connected during early colonization centuries, it didn't really pose as a huge threat to the capital at the time, Rio de Janeiro. And one might say that. the "parallel" colony up North was getting even more advanced in terms of urbanization than the capital (the Crown's Priority, which kinda lead to the rest of the provinces being almost forgotten).

Speaking for all Americans, you’re more than welcome to insult the design of our flag. It’s way too busy. In my youth, I went to Greece on a trip and while my mind was naturally blown by lots of things in Athens, one small, but still mind blowing thing was just that other countries have flags that are aesthetically pleasing and look nice in a design sense. Flags are meant to be noticed so I’m not saying the US flag is bad. Just that if one stripe or a few stars is good, it doesn’t follow that 13 stripes or even 50 stars is necessarily better.

I'm glad the Brazilians didn't stay with that green version of the US flag. It was too derivative. I love their current flag. It was a good design choice. Bem feito, Brasil!

The US flag is extremely ugly, our flag is unique and there is no flag in the world similar to ours.

I appreciate the sentiment and get your meaning, but just as a heads up... When we say "Bem feito!" here in Brazil, with a certain amount of emphasis, we're usually saying with that schadenfreudian feeling of seeing someone being punished by karma. It's our "Nelson's Ha-ha!" Again, thanks, and I am also glad that they changed the flag because it looked terrible. No offense to the American flag, it's just that it looks like an awful attempt at imitation. What's with that top hat made out of stars anyway? **cringes**

We still technically do. Some States like Piauí and Sergipe still use that HIDEOUS First Republican flag as their State flags. If you wanna see a rather interesting Brazilian spin on the Star Sprangled Banner though, I suggest you check the flags of São Paulo and Maranhão.
