I’m only halfway through, but I’m absolutely shocked by this story! My husband and I adopted two older children at the same time, much like this couple. They were 8 & 9. We were also lied to by the orphanage about their history, health, and special needs. We were told they were healthy, well-adjusted siblings, but later found out not related at all. One of our children turned out to have a significant intellectual disability and my other child had deep trauma that caused behavioral struggles through the years. Even with all of that, we NEVER regretted our decision! Our adoption didn’t go the way we had pictured in our minds, but nothing in life is guaranteed. You could give birth to your child and still have problems you didn’t foresee. It was a challenging time, but more than ten years later, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. That’s what you sign on for with international, older child adoption. Our children are grown now and are the light of our lives. They’re our only kids and all we ever wanted. They have their struggles, but don’t we all? This young girl didn’t deserve that. She reminds me of my youngest. Even at the worst of times, I couldn’t imagine abandoning my child that way.

I’m not sure I would’ve made a completely different decision. I wouldn’t have returned her to Russia, but I certainly wouldn’t have her around my other child. I would have tried to find an institution she would not be able to come back to my house, until she was very obviously not a threat to the other child or herself. Though it was in the interest of the owner's business for her to fly in to rescue the abandoned little girl. Revealing the full medical and social details etc of a child only at the emotional moment adopters arrive to sign the papers and take the adoptee into their care, or not giving them important information unless they ask for it as they sign the papers, is at best unwise and at worst deceptive. So if she had not acted to "rescue" the sad little abandoned girl, the documentary might well have ruined her business. Notice how the adoptive mother and father called her adopted brother "my son", and didn't ever call her "my daughter". They tried to say she never bonded with them, but they clearly always had distance with her. They never emotionally gave her the chance, and she picked up on it. So glad someone could see she deserved a chance and gave her the life she deserved. Also, how lovely is it that she touched Troy so deeply he gave another child a chance with adoption? He had more empathy for her in the fleeting moments he knew her than her initial adoptive parents did for her over a year and a half. What a lovely man.

That little boy was their golden child. That's not good for anybody involved. But what really got me was the comments about "this isn't what we signed up for" or words to that effect. It's exactly what they signed up for. An older child will need a lot of time and patience adjusting. Adoptees often have attachment issues. They sounded completely unprepared to deal with an older, international adoptee. You have to work at that relationship, work at being seen as trustworthy. They sounded put out that they didn't get the easy kid they imagined. That one psychiatrist was terrible. Having difficulty trusting people and even being able to accept someone's love is hardly being unable to love. We didn't great anything about manic episodes so I have no idea why she was labeled as potentially bipolar. She was given a handful of diagnoses for disorders that typically present in the teens or twenties.

While it was cruel to send her back while telling her to 'be brave' and 'not to cry' like they weren't completely abandoning her again, giving the opportunity for another family to love her properly was probably the best thing because the obvious coaching and manipulation here from the woman is sickening to watch. Kudos to Sabrina, shame on that woman who lied who was coward and made up stories after getting scared of the misinformation about Russian medical records which she got misinformed by her colleagues, oligophrenic means developmental issue realting to intellectual disability to learn, it's not mental disorder, some kids aren't good at math, some kids are slow , not everyone who is commenting below this video are scientists! we live average lives with our average mental ability to learn ! No child is born to feed a parent’s dream, they are their own person, not the means to your fantasy! This couple was never ready for children, they did not want children, they wanted the means to feed their desire and NOT love a person unconditionally, which is what a parent is supposed to do.
