Күн бұрын

In this episode of HUNTR Podcast, we bring on Kip Adams of the National Deer Association as we look for answers to the many problems involving whitetail hunting as we know it today. With Kip's knowledge behind whitetail deer, we pick his brain and look for a better understanding of what the future of hunting will look like and how we can maintain a healthy deer herd moving forward. We talk about how too much hunter opportunity leads to bad hunting experiences whether that be too many hunters on public land, baiting deer, crossbows, etc. At the end of the day, it's a limited resource and we have to protect that while having the best experience we can as hunters. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show as Kip shares his knowledge with us.

Jeremy, (long post) -look at the rebuilt JD7000 true no till 2 row corn/beans planters. They have a guy on the net that rebuilds them. Plant and put out starter fertilizer in one pass. Go back once more to fert and spray and you’ll have 45,000 lbs of corn in cover. . -Beans: the JD plants beans as well -I say forget the real world beans. Get the enlist, RR extend or RR extend flex that take glufosinate “dicambe like”

Great episode!! I actually didn’t know NDA is QDMA! All great info on this podcast & great to have more advocates for hunters & resource!!! Tiny issue to point out was the hunters per square mile iowa vs pa…. PA has 16m forested acres or 58% of area & 1.5m deer. Iowa has

I m from NE Ohio and haven’t shot a deer since pre Covid . I usually use a compound bow but if I could use a rifle it would be way way too easy , lol . from a tree stand and like you guys said , sometimes I don’t feel like ending an animal’s life . I m 52 and went for a buck last year who never showed up , just little bucks . I made a video of the morning deer party . There’s a monster back there . I don’t know where he hides but he loves to come out at night . I think the population has rebounded since Covid and like you guys said . I just like shooting and the gear and jerky isn’t free , you ll earn it . I ve had some big ones come run up on me crashing through the bushes . There’s so much to see and peacefulness in the woods . Where can I send the pic of the big guy I was talking about . We caught him hanging back from the camera but you can still see the enormity of the ears and rack compared to the smaller guy he looks like a Moose , lol

Should look into getting a 2 row John Deere planter for corn / soybeans. 2500$ or 3500$ if you want fertilizer bins on them. Clover and brassicas I feel like do better when broadcasted instead of drilled.

What hunter density is in your mind acceptable for hunting public ground? I don't understand how your expectations could ever be realized and in the "good old days of deer hunting" we had a lot more hunters. I cant see how a state with 750,000 hunters can ever satisfy everyone. If you want fewer hunters on public ground go hunt the northern tier national forest ground. Fewer deer and fewer hunters. Kip was a great guest.
@HUNTRPOD
@HUNTRPOD Жыл бұрын
I think the interesting part there is that it sure as hell didn’t feel oversaturated in the good old days. Archery was barren besides small game hunters (cue my crossbow rant). Rifle was busy but seemed you could still roam and at least you were respectful. I think a lot of land was lost. The ratio to decreasing hunters and open hunting land, open land is decreasing much faster…thus why we feel so crowded
@johna2835
@johna2835 Жыл бұрын
@@HUNTRPOD I'm lucky to hunt private or uncrowded public land most of the time. In PA a lot of public is empty if you get a mile off the road. I would say that states like Illinois, Kansas Missouri, and Iowa have a lot of land leased up and the pushes crowds onto public. I think that is true in parts of Michigan and at least be best parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Things change - I'm not sure I have a solution.

Being a Buffalo County, Wi resident and doing an extensive deep dive into CWD and trying to put some logic in comparison to department management versus hunter participation I truly feel that this is becoming a major contributor to a decline or lack of hunter participation as well as doe management. As CWD prevalence is reported and recorded with increasing prevalence along with the advisory not to consume the meat if positive, it really turns the tables from the root of hunting purely for the joy of hunting and the consumption of a great protein. When they advertise higher rates of prevalence this equates to higher odds of wasting time, energy and money for something they are advised to discard and I think a lot of people either fall out of hunting at that point or the ones drinking the Kool-Aid that still like to hunt have turned more towards of goal of quantity of bucks harvested versus quality of buck harvested, especially in areas such as Dane County, where I believe for each deer you harvest that tests positive you get a free either sex tag to use again for that season. I do think there are several other factors to hunter decline and participation, but I do think this is one of the bigger ones.
@HUNTRPOD
@HUNTRPOD Жыл бұрын
Great input here. We talk a little more about CWD in an upcoming podcast. I don’t think anyone has good answers. We surely can’t “do nothing” but when is too much interference recognized. It’s a long road and I blame a lot of agencies for failure to work and communicate with hunters better

@@HUNTRPOD out of all the research I have done on CWD I have yet to find a situation that proves CWD is nearly as endemic as they claim. The county in Wisconsin that is known to have it the longest and has the highest prevalence, 30% overall and 50%+ in bucks, had a healthy appearing deer herd and overall herd population according to the department is significantly growing year over year and this is in the wild. I have not been able to locate one single controlled study of what the long term affect would be without hunting, predation, vehicles, etc, other than an unofficial observation assessment of Wind Cave National Park which had CWD identified I believe in the early 2000's, and to date has reported up to 30% prevalence in areas and also still a healthy and growing herd. So why not do nothing? Mother nature is much better at solving things then we ever will be. Can you imagine if the same departments coming up with these strategic management plans for CWD were also the ones put in charge to control COVID...... Whooaaaa!!
@HUNTRPOD
@HUNTRPOD Жыл бұрын
I completely get it. And you are right about Mother Nature…but what if doing nothing eliminate the deer forever, and we had a chance to minimize the effects. Not sure I could live with that on my conscious

@@HUNTRPOD With over 60 years of observation and research being conducted and claims of being an endemic, I simply am not seeing it and I don't know of any hunter with boots on the ground that does. What are the proven CWD management practices you guys believe in and apply to the properties you hunt?
@HUNTRPOD
@HUNTRPOD Жыл бұрын
None, fortunately we don’t have detections in our area yet. I agree more research specific to management is needed. You all are in it, get a group of landowners together and ban any CWD actions on your properties. See what happens

Try to hook up with a girl at the bar “watering hole” when shes there with her friends and family or try to take her home when shes there with one friend and you tell me whats easier? You guys are spraying way way too late for fall plots. You want to really set back weeds? Spray gly 41% and 2-4D 46% a few weeks after spring green up and that mostly takes care of your weeds for your fall plots. Leave them brown all summer because your not doing any good for the deer by letting them browse weeds and broadleafs in the summer when there is already tons and tons of food available. Tuesday’s schedule: 1. Work 2. Gym 3. HUNTR 4. Bed… lol love the guest lately!

IMO a lot of the negative view of QDMA at least from the people I know including a couple that were members were in response to other members and the "management plans" or restrictions they followed. i.e. only shooting 8pt as wide as their ears or something like 18" or wider. ...etc. Zero real world benefit to that practice and they were strict with the rule and regulating it to kids or new hunters. I see NDA has no specific stance on it and it is sort of up tot he member and can vary. BUT the individual members themselves were being so strict and in many cases unrealistic in their practice it turned a lot of people off to the organization.
